For the past months, I've done nothing in eve, haven't even undocked in a long time. But I keep renewing my subscription, and I keep logging in, just to spin my ship round in the station and chat in some channels. What is it that keeps me logging in? Why?

You are hoping one day you will log on and something better will happen, something that might renew the fun factor of this game for you. But for that to happen you will need a goal.
I might suggest a PVP training school like Agony Unleashed and see what happens.

Renewing your subscription with PLEX or cash? If it's with PLEX bought with isk you made before you stopped doing stuff in EVE, you're logging in because it would be a waste of your already-spent time NOT to keep your account going. If you're paying with cash I really dont know.

Just go crazy then, suicide gank a CONCORD ship, live in a WH with a stealth bomber, or live in the eve gate system and just shoot at everyone that comes near you. Why not, if you're leaving it isn't like you'll need a sterling reputation.

Having attended their classes, I do advise you watch their forums since there are only a few a month. They are announced weeks in advance and the enrollment is usually closed within a day or so max. This is because they fill to max capacity really quick. (depending on class type this is 50 to 100 people or so) Each class usually consists of two days total between the class and then a practical application low sec roam.
Depending on what class you attend will determine the ship you fly. In the case of the basic class you are restricted to a small selection of ships which must be fitted to the letter as indicated in class reading material. More recent classes such as the upcoming wolfpack require that EVERYBODY fly the exact same ship with the exact same fittings.
Anyhow, here is the link. http://www.agony-unleashed.com/news.php

You're addicted - even if the initial euphoria has worn off you keep on doing it. It's a common phenomenon with addictions.
Next to that the idea of leaving behind so many hours of time investment is very hard to let go. A bit like bad marriages.

Been asking myself exact the same for past few months... A wise decision crystallized: Take a break. At least that's what I'll do when this acc expire in several days. Eve will either die or survive, hopefully 2nd option, with major bugs solved.

I don't really know of anyone myself included who can play eve continuously for years at a time. You eventually get bored of whatever it was that was getting you to log on so you do like everyone else and take a break. Eventually the game(read: addiction) will call you back and with newly recharged batteries(or a thorough enough detox ;p) you tend to find something new to interest you if the thing you left still doesn't spark any interest.

this....
on an eve break myself and slowly eating up the cash reserves (blew close to a bil in isk already on plex, still got a decent wallet left). If I come back from break...will just be poor but that is fixable. Especially since training the whole time away (running tons of long skill trains, do not have to log in much lol).
If I don't come back...meh just burning isk I would have no other use for anyway.
Just park your clone in jita to login for good plex price breaks.

Truth,
Eve has become more and more boring since the devs decided that this was a game for carebear and have steadily made pvp a second aspect of the game...if not third.
The devs only care about the real world money they make and they count on the fact that players will continue to spend real dollars for an online game, it is a proven addiction, so to sum it up, CCP is just the same as a crack dealer. The devs get free crack to make the game take longer to play and easier for new players..as in we think that a new player should be sufficiently hooked after 14 days of free crack to invest all his/her recreational time and money into playing this game for not less than 1 year, at which point we will have you change the pre req's of everything that said player has trained for so those skills are no longer relevant and he/she will need to train more skills to chase the proverbial carrot on the stick, and also please nerf back to redundancy any ship/weapons that may have been trained in the last year by any and all players that have trained for them, and for the ones who get away..give them titans and fight bombers that have skill books that are worth 6 plex cards and make plex cards really easy to buy for real cash and then make those skills take 2 more months of the players real money to train..each skill that is..and then promise them that the changes being made will stop the lag (the lag that we will never really admit to) and that eve will get better and faster...because by now the speed nerf has been forgotten...or never learned about.
Just go to character sales, you can buy all sorts of 50+msp players cheap...players are leaving this game in droves..what? I have to go...starcraft...

CCP is a business and like all businesses - they cater to the majority, the majority happens to be people who don't like to engage in pvp, nothing you can do about it so no point complaining.

Problem with that is many games have tried this and end and not getting their numbers they expected. Warhammer was one game that had a shot. Started off with decent mixed pvp. had a strong fanboy base even from the tabletop. Got to be a carebear game over time and voila...became WOW's ugly sibling. WOW has pve content based locked. Blizzard does it bigger and better, has for years.
EVE pve only has the allure of free game play. However....as was in my case, I play games to have fun, not be a second job that I come home to make my 10 mil a night for 30 nights (or power grind 30 mil for 10 nights) to play the game for free. Was more than happy to blow 300 mil in one night for some good not lag ruined fights. Lose money for a plex to buy replacements, next month a cc pay for sub...all good though. Why ccp really needs to realign thinking. Unless doing something wrong, a decent fit drake at 4-5 months can have this game free for play if strictly pve. tack on month or 2 for raven...you are done spending money on anything excpet ammo (my firesale raven I bought made me over 2 billion isk...I paid a whopping 100 mil for it full fit).
It isn't the die hard carebears who pay for subs, its the pvp'ers and the new players. CCP wants, I dare say needs, the new players wanting pvp. Or 6 months later unless they suck at this game there goes another paid sub as they plex the rest of the game. Why lag should be number one. Well that and for dust cause it will be null sec alliances who have the strongest vested interest in blowing up pi stuff. they'll have 400 ship fleet battles lagging the server out....with ground forces of 100's doing the same thing probably in the same systems since an IT, NC, Atlas, etc FC probably will want to have a coordinated attacks to be strategic and stuff. Node crash on console and PC at the same time. Sign me up for that please lol.

I think some people think they are NPC seeded or something.
For those that are not aware.... That PLEX you bought off the market was in fact paid for with real world money by "Somebody".

Like most long-term players, I have also taken breaks over the years (and will no doubt take breaks in the years to come) either through boredom, burnout, RL-pressure or the desire to try out a new MMOG but I always come back. As others have said, be it through cash or plex, you should keep your accounts open while you play other games/do other things so that when you do come back (and long-term players almost always DO come back, in my experience) your char will have some new skills/toys available to them. .
