In particular, with mission setups. I mean you don't have to run the booster continuously, only when your cap gets low for a quick injection. And cap booster charges are pretty cheap, too, right? So why doesn't anyone ever use them?

Edited by: Kneebone on 01/09/2010 18:33:56 Simple, for PvE you either do a sustained cap stable tank, or you fit just enough tank and a ton of DPS to take care of the DPS before it gets to you. You will see them on the less tank, more gank setups.
A common setup for a booster is a XL CNR with 4 BCU's in the lows and riggors for rigs. The ship will pump out a lot of DPS, have a high burst tank, but will not sit there tanking indefinately. Agro management and killing stuff quickly and pulsing your active tank is the best setup for a mission. It could just be that the purpose of your life is to server as a warning to others. |

Because forums are full of farmers.
I saw a killed Nightmare (or was it a Paladin) with 1 tachyon and 3 megabeams, but almost every single module was officer's. 30-40 bil isk down the drain when he got hit by a suicide gank squad.
And he hadn't had a cap booster. What a waste ---[center] Please resize your signature to the maximum file size of 24000 bytes. Zymurgist |

Generally cap boosters are not really used in PvE mission running... There are a few exceptions but they are very high skill and expensive ships like the nightmare. Yes some people use them, but in general for fastest isk earning and mission turn around times, by far the majority do not use cap boosters. ------- "Because the Dominix is the Chuck Norris of Eve!" |

Missiles take up too much space in my cargohold to bother with cap boosters. Those things are gigantic, physically.

This is incorrect. The only way to get around cap boosters for most of the fast earning gank mobiles is to field an absurdly expensive tank - otherwise it's too hard to get by with only a single cap module and sustain Maximum Gank.

I used cap boosters on every single one of my mission ships, Nightmare, CNR and Paladin.
Your exactly right, they are cheap and you barely even need to use 5 on most missions and only take up 1 slot, leaving plenty for maximum gank.
The reason you might see a lot of noobs NOT use cap boosters is because they have the "zomg must be cap stable" mentality and lose out on a lot of ISK/hr or they just too lazy.
I wouldn't fly any mission ship without cap boosters, 2-3 slot tank MAX and the rest to maximise completion times.

I don't like capboosters because they are so massive, if they were at least half their size it might be more interesting to keep them in the cargo bay if I didn't have to worry about size. I have been running a vargur for the last couple weeks without a cap recharger or rig with about 5 minutes with everything running (usually leaving the AB off though), been trying to maintain the cap by "throttling off" my urge to push it to the edge. At times I still run out of cap as the last battleship is dying and I am tractoring the wrecks up into a ball to loot and come back with a salvage ships. As the NPCs don't neut me in caldari space, it didn't bother me at first but I am probably going to slap one cap rig to sustain it longer because I am tired of burst cycling the shield rep and today seemed laggy for me, took a few extra seconds for moduless to activate so I was hitting the buttons a second time to activate it when infact I turned them off . Not so great when your shields are at 50 and the DPS is hitting like heavy hailstones. Its also a pain trying to multi-task the shooting of ships, tractoring them in, and not activating your guns on the wrecks ; cap booster would only distract me more

Cap stability is for afk mission runners and noobs. Cap Boosters are for running missions as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Cap boosters are for people who want to run missions as quickly and efficiently as possible without spending a fortune on a deadspace tank. Cap boosters are a small time sink when you refill your cargo hold and cap booster. This time sink doesn't exist for deadspace tanks.

Cap boosters are part of many "meta" pve builds and they work great.
I found out exactly what the problem with cap boosters is. Just like everything in eve, at low SP they suck.
I started out with a cap stable phoon when I got "serious" about missioning because everything else was so soft. Lol. I couldn't even run a cap stable phoon now. I gained an AB, webber, TP and 2 BCS's going from cap stable to cap booster.
If you have an alt you can come in and drop off a bunch of cap boosters. this is especially useful at low SP.
They are especially nice when you make them yourself out of reprocessed mission loot. Because everything you mine is free. When you say "fanboi" try to picture a fat man doing burlesque with 2 big ass fans that say CCP on one and HTFU on the other. Because that dude is me. |

And by fortune in this case, it's not a few hundred mil to a bil. It's generally billions upon billions. 10 billion isn't all that much when everything comes around - even if I'd never ever suggest such a setup as the performance is barely increased what so ever and the risk for suicideganks has skyrocketed. On my kronos i got enough cap from two t2 CCC rigs + 1 cap recharger. So that isnt really a fortune considering the price of a kronos, and i only lose my rig slots. Granted they could give me some increase in dps with t2 rof rig or something, but in the end it doesnt matter much.
And missioning with a two slot tank? That is one repper and one hardener (since that list included armor tanked ships), unless you got an AB and keep alot of range to everything, which costs dps, that must give problems on some missions.

And how exactly wouldnt you need billions, but tens of billions to create a high gank setup without cap booster? First of all, that i have to tell this to people who use cap boosters, you dont need to be cap stable, you got a decent cap reserve that should allow you to run stuff at least a few minutes until you killed enough NPCs. But even cap stable, an a-type med shield booster costs less than a billion. Add some hardeners and you got enough tank.
Then again you're using 3(!) modules for cap alone. Which is alot of lost dps. Then again, the Kronos is... poor.. in the first place. (For pve that is. )
Anyway, point is with a cap booster instead of the recharger you could drop the rigs for something more useful. Saying exactly what would be impossible without reviewing the setup as a whole. Parrots, commence!

Edited by: Furb Killer on 02/09/2010 07:26:04 Indeed kronos isnt exactly shining example of good marauder. However i only use one (1) module slot and two rig slots. Rigs are pretty much always worse than modules. There are two options, i can put a hybrid weapon rig in it, which indeed would give me a tad more dps but nothing significant, or i can put tank rigs in, which costs me speed, but would possibly allow me to drop a hardener for another magstab (see, rigs less effective than modules, have to use 2 rigs to drop one module). However running 4 magstabs instead of 3 also doesnt give me that much more dps.
So it is NOT alot of dps lost. Yes it is some DPS lost, i never denied that cap boosters have advantages. However what i do deny is that cap boosters come directly from the messias and make an enormous difference on every PVE built. On faction BS and marauders you spend enough that you can use t2 CCC rigs (sadly faction BS can only fit one) without feeling bad. (Aditionally doesnt increase your suicide gank profile). That makes cap boosters especially useful for t1 BS, but most t1 BS dont have the PG to fit a cap booster. A few do, and there it is a good solution, like on a raven. However the downside, many people using t1 BS for missioning do so because they are relative new and dont have alot of isk to spend. Those people also dont have very high skills, so will do relative long on missions, requiring more cap boosters.

Due to the way the stacking formula works, T2 damage rigs are actually very competitive with (faction) damage mods on high DPS setups. The dps increase on going from two faction damage mods to two plus a t2 burst aerator is very comparable, and if you've already got three faction damage mods on, a burst aerator II will add more DPS than a fourth. Signature removed. |

I know that, otherwise a weapons rig would be totally useless. And any marauder should have 3 (or 4) faction damage mods fitted. Otherwise you are just doing it wrong. Yes i know you get a dps increase that is significant, but imo not large enough to be worth it for me to fit cap booster.

1) If you plan to blitz away, maximize your ISK+LP per hour, and pay 100% attention to what is going on on your screen - there is nothing wrong in rolling with cap boosters and max damage setup 2) If you plan to complete missions in reasonable times, be OK with your ISK LP per hour not being super duper optimal, want to pay 50% to what is going on your screen, occasionally pick up phone, go make some tea while IN mission and stretch your legs - you go for cap stable setup with not-so-optimal damage
The truth is, if you are good at fitting, the both setups are really not so far away from each other dps-wise.

on my pally i dont use cap boosters, i have 1 cap recharger in and rest are tank or tracking computers. rigs are armor rep rigs.
im saying this because someone before me said they use a inj on their paladin.... lol WHY?
everythings dead before they hurt you.. unless u have no idea how to run missions and kill the wrong stuff at the wrong time.
same with my nightmare. 95% of the missions i didnt even turn on my booster as the passive recharge was enough to tank the small stuff that got close enough to shoot. all the BS melted out of range.
cap stability is for ppl who afk mission, injector is for ppl who learn how to mission. i have never used a inj in my 4 years or so in eve to do missions or used a cap stable fit (sucks the dps out :( ).
tho when i run missions on my alt on her pally, she uses CCC rigs instead of rep rigs as i usually do other things at the same time with my main... so its more forgiving if i mess up abit :D

Honestly, for mission running I have no need of a cap booster. I fly usually a Raven or a Drake. More often than not, it's not an issue. Granted, i don't Solo 4s much any more because it took too long. For me, it's faster and more profitable to run 3s as fast as I can, so no major risk.
The only time I would have needed a cap booster was when running a certain DED, where the Sansha rats Neut heavily. Still, I switched to a drake running passive resist mods and it wasn't an issue.

Why can't I ask an innocent question without being called a troll around here? Not the first time that's happened =/ It's not like I can get the kind of answer I need by asking this in the in-game help channel.
But thanks for the eventual replies. I've learned quite a bit and will stop fitting CCC's to my ships in favour of tank rigs now.

eh a pithum c-type med booster isn't all that expensive, on a ship with a boost bonus (golem, vargur, maelstrom) add in 2x t2 invluns and a t2 boost amp and you have a working permatank. have to watch aggro sometimes but mostly can just plow through the npcs fast enough that it doesn't really matter.
pithum a-type + 2x cn invluns also isn't That expensive, but it is more expensive than what I'd put on a ship.
for the paladin/kronos it is also pretty easy with cap rigs and a t2 fitting

cap stability is underated (unless ur in amarr space)
with cap stability, you can run mission reasonably well while still abusing the market via day trading, putting up and down contracts, and remote sell and make stuff while mission running.
To maximise mission running, cap stability is a must.
