Hmmm interesting. We already have mining lasers that transport ore from asteroid to hold. I cannot see why a tractor beam shouldn't be possible within game continuity.
I would give up a high/medium slot for this.

Originally by: kradak could have something like a tractor beam, med slot gadget for pulling in cargo from something like 20km away (possible increase with skill), would annoy jet can miners though :)
Brilliant idea! Lot of people would go totally omfgballisticberserkragingbonkers over it, but the issue of unanchored containers would finally resolve itself over the three or four months after... nobody would keep using jetcans for mining anyway
Although, of course there would be more "lootstealing", too.
(btw, battleship + tractorbeam + target frigate... me like ) ------------------------------------------ My bio

What about a tow magnet or harpoon like in Enterprise? it would be a turrent mount and you could lock onto the can and then launch your magnet at it. It would tow back at a speed just a little faster than your average frigate speed. Someone else could lock the same can with a tow which would cause it to be stuck in space. This would prevent can stealing.

I have an idea, why not have loot blow up with the ship, that way we dont' have to worry about cans.
Infact why does the loot, which is fitted on a ship, blow up into a freaking can anyway? Even more so, why does the can just sit there in space where it was when the ship blew up.
Lets have the can move around from the explosion, make it damage any ship that gets to close and blow up if it hits a gate.
Either that or I am up for all the pieces of the ship flying around outside of the loot can all in opposit directions so that it is really annoying for the people who complain about a single freaking can.....
how about that as a solition? THEN I will GIVE you your tractor beam, ONLY AFTER you have to lock on to each part of the exploded ship.

Easier: loot distance 4 km instead of 1500m
No 'new tech' needed.

I like the salvage drones idea.
Or maybe a skill that'd let you open cans farther out than 1500m.

It may be a hassel for faster ships, however in a BS; a cargoscanner works great. What used to take 30 mins, now takes 5 mins. The boost to several of the scanners recently is a great move; 50 km for a cargo scanner (named versions have even longer range).

I'm all for extending loot range. 4-5k would be good.

I am cool with this it would indeed end jetcans for mining. Of coure as a miner I hope all of you are prepared to pay my new prices for ore also.

Every single angle has been covered in this thread in the "EVE Idea Lab" forum...
Scooping Cargo containers Read all the pages if you really want to. I think the Dev's do realise that change is wanted by the majority and will get round to it right after every other change everyone is screaming for

Guys dont bother with frigs for pickin up loot. Grab an indy. my badger mk2 with 3 overdrives, a 10mn ab, and a few cap chargers, goes 550m/s , and holds a whopping 4,400m3 . Much easier for loot pickup especially regarding level 4 missions. And yeh, 4km or so would be a nice range to open/collect from containers
