Edited by: Zendoren on 08/09/2010 02:28:44 As the subject suggests, EVE Online, via DeviantArt, is holding an art contest for any and everyone that wants to enter. If you ever had a beautiful design for a EVE Online internet spaceship, now it the time to bring it out of mothballs as the contest is poneying up some serious prizes for the winers! So fire up your 3DMax Studio, Bryce, Blender and Adobe After Effects as this will surely be getting ugly! =P
For more details please visit here
Edit: BTW first place winer gets their ship design added to game!!11111ONEONEONEONE!!!11111!!!

lol "Apocalypse" is misspelled on their example ships image.
And on second glance...so are a bunch of others. WTB proofreaders?

As are Phoenix and Cormorant, although I believe that is a player made image. (A very, very old one at that, why didnt they use the newer one?)
I might enter, it seems like a way of legally obtaining an iPad without giving money to apple.

Edited by: Freyya on 08/09/2010 08:34:23 Yes it seems legit since it's also all over DA. Don't bother looking at the submissions just yet, they're all crap/don't follow the rules.
Time i dust off the old pencil and paper and wacom/PS and see if i can come up with some designs. Doubt it though ^^. I'm expecting you to win this one Nova Fox..as long as only the really talented artists like the already submitted ones enter, this one is yours for the taking .
Also; Would be wise for CCP to actually release a news item at the same time or whatever so people know it's actually real. ___________

I can count about 5 eve online ship fan artist who can win easily over me, its most unfourtunate none have submitted any sort of art over the last 2 years ive watched them. Maybe, just maybe this will drag them out of hiding.
This also ruins my plan to hack up my latest ship into a tech 3 looks like ill have to double back and touch up this hull out instead.
Also I welcome any challenger to join the fray. May the best shipwright win. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 1SEPT10

they say that the ship will be added to EVE, but they don't give any indication of its role (since its only one, I presume it'll be one of the free gift ships like the zephyr). Some idea of what its role should be may help with the design. or will the devs work backwards from the design to come up with a role?

So if I understand it right, you sign away any and all rights, for any entry, regardless of whether you win or not, you can't use your own work basically after or outside of the contest.

actually CCP has made no comment about this. One would assume it would be on the first page under news but is not there.
yet deviant arts is a respectable site, so I guess CCP just hasn't shown their support.
I mean maybe I am wrong, but we have had no official word from CCP on this yet?

The simple fact is that the product you made becomes CCP's property. Furhter more artist who work for studios already sign a little contract declaring any art they make for the company they're working for is totally in the property of that company not the artist, the artist can likely still claim the work as part of a portfolio but he will never be able to commerically use that artwork ever again. Im sure the fine print that allows a fan designed ship to be made would include a contract declaring similar terms for submitted works.
In lamest terms its trademarked anyways, all my current fan ship designs are in a sense ccp's, just like any sonic the hedgehog (I had to pick a fan base thats a bit too obvious on the style) like charaters are trademark of sega's. I know it can sound unfair but its the only real way to stop alot of legal headaches by accepting that terms that anything the fan base might come up with can be or could be used by the parent company becuase they own the 'idea'.
Take my case for example, just about every ship I have designed fan wise includes the racial name to whom that hull belongs to, I just ID'd that ship to be part of that idea and ccp just happens to come up with even something similar to that design there's little i can do about it other than unforcibly redesign my own stuff which I had been forced to do twice when they came out with fighte bombers that looked similar to corvettes I already published already as my poorer quality ships would just be regarded as a badly modified variant of those.
Now if ccp stole the ship design from this picture ive done. Odysseia City then I would be in the right to sue for theft becuase that design is for my own personal use.
Just all in all its alot of legalise I cannot afford to deal with to be honest to protect my own work, best I can do is discourage others from using my work as thier own as i would probably get in trouble along the same lines as me trying to sell eve online fanship prints. It's "uncoloured line drawings/renderings."
means you can submit a drawing or a render of a 3d model, but has to be uncoloured/all in the same color.

you were not hired to do these ships. those are only yours. even if you give them EVE names and categorization, they are still yours. CCP is simply allowing you, in good faith, to present these ships as related to EVE. you could remove all names, and sell those ships, and CCP couldn't do a thing. what you couldn't do, is selling these to third party as, say, "Caldari destroyer". ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |
