So almost entirely missiles and shields here, so naturally I am purely caldari.
Is it just me or does the torp raven just suck vs. a torp typhoon?
Granted the torp raven does more dps and at a little farther range but honestly you get more drones + 80% damage + NEUT HELL + better tank. And you are welcomed in armor RR gangs. The freaking armor buffer phoon is even faster than the raven with a smaller sig radius. I have insanely crappy armor skills and it is still a better boat.
I honestly can't find a reason to stay with the raven. Tonight I cross train.

You sure took your time realizing that. My corp mate crosstrained for the phoon too and since then he never used a Raven again.

Comments: - Neither is better, they're just different. - 50% more range is not "a little". The Typhoon's torps don't even reach to disruptor range. - Fitting on the Typhoon is much harder than on the Raven. - The Typhoon requires omgwtf skills to fly. (I have them). - The Typhoon does have drones, but drones get eaten by sentry fire. - The Raven does more DPS.
I like and use them both.

Agreed. Not an easy cross train (but worth it imo).

Disagree. Gank fit typhoon is more dps. Comparing practical specs probably leaves more dps to the raven on average, but it also leaves an untold amount of utility unaccounted for, so it's a pretty poor comparison.
I love the typhoon, but i'm not as keen on the raven. I think you're giving it a bit too much credit.

There's no point comparing or discussing impractical Typhoon fits. Once you compare practical fits, the Raven really does dramatically outdamage the Typhoon. And the "untold utility" unaccounted for consists of, at most, a set of medium ECM drones - at least as long as the Typhoon is gank fit. You're not giving the Raven enough credit.

What? The ability to put a more than mediocre armor tank on the phoon is utility enough to make it superior in most settings. Aside from obviously being a better RR bs, drone... what.. i don't even.. ecm with a gank fit? Please tell me that was a joke. I may be guilty of not giving the raven enough credit. I'm not one to try and shoe-horn caldari ships into gangs, but you have to give the typhoon some credit. Comparing it to a raven is like comparing a steak knife to a swiss army multi-tool.

This set up can hit to 30 for between 950 CN Ammo, 1100 DPS using Rage and 750 at 45 km with Javelin. It runs Duel Painters to keep the Torps accurate. It needs a +3 Cpu inplant or downgrade to Arbi's.
It is purely an Anti Battleship platform where other ships have the tarket tackled, it has 90000EHP and and duel large nuets to deal with tackle and 2 flights of ECM Drones.
Raven
Lows Damage Control II Reactor Control Unit II 3x Ballistic Control System II
Mids 2x Target Painter II 2x Large Shield Extender II Invulnerability Field II Quad LiF Fueled I Booster Rockets
Highs 6x Siege Missile Launcher II 2x Large 'Regard' I Power Projector
Rigs 3x Large Core Defence Field Extender I
Drones 5x Hornet EC-300 5x Vespa EC-600
Do not get me wrong I love the Typhoon, but a good Torp Raven is a work of art.

What are you on about? Comments: - Having an armor tank is just that - having an armor tank. It's advantageous in certain situations, and disadvantageous in others. - The Typhoon has a 175m^3 drone bay. You absolutely can fit 5 med ECM drones on your gank Typhoon fit, but because it's a gank Typhoon, those 5 med ECM drones are 100% of your "utility". - The Typhoon absolutely can have more utility, but it pays for that utility too. It doesn't have that utility and get anywhere near the Raven's DPS.
Your analogy of a swiss army multitool is apt ... the Raven is a cleaver, and the Typhoon is the multitool. They don't do the same things.

Its not all about dps and how far you can project them.
That aside, the Raven is close to useless when im comes down to do somethingelse then shooting a BS.
The Phoon on the other hand can shoot BS nearly as effective and can deal with many more things on top.

For solo PVP, I find that a D425 AC Phoon is better than a Torp phoon. But I prefer the Tempest for the 5th mid anyway (ECCM).

I'm not stating the raven has no place, but honestly comparing them in a pvp setting it goes without saying the typhoon is a better choice (assuming you're skilled enough to pilot both) in most cases.
Of course, if you're a raven fanboi as much as i'm one for the typhoon, this could drag on a bit... i'd wager I havent bothered to theorycraft the raven enough do it total and complete justice, but I stand by my statements all the same.

I think it's more the fact that a Phoon can easily manage a 5 slot tank and have 110k+ EHP, but a Raven can have a 2 or 3 slot tank with 80k EHP at best. The Phoon also has the advantage of being very good at neuting. The Raven has 10% more DPS. Wow.
But this is all balanced since Caldari is the PvE race and not meant to be able to PvP.

I think you're misunderstanding my position: - Both ships have a place. - The Raven is better at damage amount, damage projection, and damage application. Damage rates very highly on my list of desirable attributes. - The Typhoon is better at anything armor related (slaves, Mmmm.....!) - The Typhoon can be better at utility, but you can't go off and say that every Typhoon fit is. Certainly gank Typhoons aren't.

Nothing would make me happier :)
But really how are you going to beat something that not only has more EHP but also has 2 heavies + 1 medium neut, and is faster? You get what 200 dps more than me? That EM hole gets pretty freaking big when you are dead in the water.
Please, this is a honest question, show me a decent raven fit that is not just a warp in gank. I know it can be used for that, I have used mine for that plenty of times, I need something that can do more.
And please not one of those "I know what you have so here is my nano raven". Show me a decent, can be used in at least more than 1 situation, raven fit.

Yes the raven will lose the only plus of the raven is the shield regen.
You need to keep distance but thats difficult against a ship that is faster and pray the typhoon is low on skills or not so smart or drunk.
But I fly a raven with torps and for me it's more then sufficient for what I do. There will be always a better ship for the job. And when you fly it it will change sooner or later by ccp or you will change your goals.
I have my ships now and I will train them fully that works for me anyway.

one shield tank. One armor tank. So different, yet people still try to compare them, it makes my head spin.
Typhoon can have 110K Ehp, but it means nothing when your resists are all rock bottom since you are fitting a gazillion 1600mm's. They can fit 3 neuts/armor reps/energy transfers or any combination of them.
Ravens on the other hand shield tanks. They can fit two neuts. or shield transfers. or energy transfers or a combination of them. Non sniper amarr ships wont be able to kite the raven as their javs reach 45-50km. Also, you can overheat a sixth launcher. Cant do that with Ogre's. You can overheat invuls. Cant do that with 1600's/eanms.
Morale of story is, use raven as a shield tanker. Typhoon as an armor tanker. When you pitch these two against the other, whoever have more ships will win. They are very balanced.

That is AWESOME. Has no one told you that EHP is HP amount with resists taken into effect? And considering the phoon will out neut the raven, and the raven will have a 0% EM resist (unless rigged), how exactly are these balanced? Toe to Toe the phoon should FACE **** the raven. Even its sig is less than a torp, a raven's isn't.
At the end of the day the typhoon is a better torp boat then the boat that is supposed to fire torps.
The last thing I want is for all ships to be even, but the one that is ONLY supposed to shoot torps shouldn't be outclassed by one that isn't.

Edited by: Moose Burger on 18/09/2010 01:39:24 No. The typhoon has high EHP from 1600's, but less resistance. This means because low resists means logistics from any ships will apply much less on you then on a raven, since the raven has 5-10% better resists on average.
if you fit 3 ballistics on both ships, 2 resists mods , they will end up with approximately the same EHP, dps, average resists, except one is shield tanked and the other is armor tanked. They have totally different points where they excel at.
Only one ship can be the better "armor tanked torp user" ,and only one can be the better "shield tanked torp user"
the real only time high EHP low resists is good is when you are soloing or you aint have logistics. But dang. Good luck getting any kills with a solo typhoon. You wont see any lone ravens going off hunting stuff, unless they are macro farmers, which any ship should be able to kill anyways.

The Range was really crippling to me on the Phoon, Hell my Nuets had more range than my Torps until I got full skills and Javs, That means there is no fighting in Dist range. But the ACS Phoon looks like a Beast im going to try very soon great DMG and way more versatile since you dont need painters. Hell against BC`s you dont really need a Web.
If I ever fought a Phoon in my Raven I would simply burn in opposite Direction and Spew Torps until we got in his range, also instantly I would target his Med/Heavy fdrones and kill em with my Lights. But best of All the Ravens Higer ECM STR means My Med ECM`s Drones will almost assuredly get a Jamm on him during the fight which might tip the battle.
Very close fight but IMO the 2 Heavy Nuets vs the 2 Heavy 1 Med Nuet are basically even since we will both get nueted out very fast.
Comes down to pilot, I personally would be in Raven for simply the range, Its frusterating being at 15km while your target burns away and watching volleys miss, becauase that extra 6km secs he just traveled is to much for them sometimes.
Raven is more forgiving in training but Phoon is very ver yElite even though I`d prefer ACS Nuet Phoon. -------------------------------------------------- "If Eve Was P*rn, It would be a Snuff film, First you get screwed then you get killed" -Me
