An optional patch will be deployed during downtime on Saturday, October 2 which will fix several issues reported to us following the release of Tyrannis 1.1. While the patch is optional, we would encourage everyone to apply the update to ensure your gameplay is improved. The optional patch will be included in a future client update. A full list of updated patch notes can be found here.
The reason for deploying an optional patch is that these updates contain UI core fixes which are client-only changes in python. This process is much quicker to prepare, test and execute and allows us to prepare a patch much faster than usual. The EVE Online client remains usable whether an optional patch is applied or not.
Following downtime you will see a pop up box once the client is launched informing you that a patch is available and if you want to install. If you click 'Yes' then the patch will be applied and then you can log into Tranquility. If you choose 'No' you will log in to Tranquility directly but you will none of the fixes applied. If you clicked 'No' in error you can still apply the patch by going to the ESC menu, General Settings and apply the patch from the 'Install' button there.

On the patch notes page, can you please list which notes belong with which of the different optional patches or builds? Its hard to understand which fixes where in which optional patch. Especially if you declined to install the first one.

The patch notes only show changes for the original Tyrannis 1.1 and the optional patch from Oct 2nd, not for the one you announced (Oct 5th). I just really hope all the PI that broke with 1.1 is getting fixed so import/export works again! Here's to hoping that those problems are a client issue and can be fixed with an optional patch...

Huh? The patch notes are for last Saturday's optional patch. What's more, at the top there is a version listed (184013) that is already behind what has been deployed (185699). Is it necessary to apply the first optional patch before the new one on the 5th? Is it necessary to remove the one from last Saturday before applying the new one?
Constructive suggestion: You really need to be out in front of this to dispel all the confusion it's bound to generate, and so far it seems to be business as usual. Start with updated patch notes for each of the optional patches and make sure they're complete. Referencing non-existant patch notes = strike one.
As much as this last week has been a fiasco, I ultimately look forward to the UI improvements that will eventually get implemented. So far, though, whatever code changes you're making in this area seem amateurish and half baked. |

TBH, I don't get too excited about this stuff normally .. but ..
PI is completely broken. As in mission critical does not work properly. Its costing me and others millions, tens of millions every day you let this go on.
The only reason it annoys me is because PI is, as you know, a click intensive and cascade process. That means when you screw up my ability to use the planetary modules and functions such as exporting goods and importing goods, you cause all the other planets to back up and fall over. I rely on them for t2 production, as many others do.
I don't cry about 'lost earnings' because I don't believe pretend money matters, but I will cry many tears indeed about carefully layed out production plans that utilize the whole creative process from original blue print aquisition, copying (in POS labs which require grind to fuel and defend etc), through invention (including all the datacore grind), to p0 > p1 conversion (in low and null sec requiring hours of hauling in cloaky transports), to p2, to t2 manufacturing, to market to make .. plex .. to do it all over again.
Right now you have screwed up the PI at the critical p2 phase and effectively halted all t2 production from me personally - and probably severely hurt many others not as rich as me and probably greatly inconvenienced the rest who are far richer than myself.
Please take this kind of thing in to consideration when you issue hot fixes and optional patches. People like me don't rage quit, but we do just lose interest when our time is wasted and we aren't actually entertained by the process.
I said that little emoe whingey ranty wall of tears because .. it was the damn optional patch that broke the PI. The 1.1 deployment was fine for me! D'oh.
Short of reinstalling the client and not applying the patches, its not looking good for me being paid up next month. *sniff

First off, really hope this helps, because these are not the standards we're used to from CCP. No wonder where the CSM proposal for the "Commit to excellence" came from...
Second, unheard solutions for unheard issues. And "Optional"?, "Client remains usable"?, are your standards that low now.???
It's good to see that you're acting kind of fast but, what good does it make if things go down with every patch? I really hope for the best but, recent facts don't seem to be backing these expectations for this humble player in particular.
Very Dissapointed

Any chance of a devblog covering:
1. Your QA process in general, 2. The Tyrannis 1.1 patch, 3. The two (so far) optional patches: why they are optional, etc. 4. The optional patch mechanism: why do you have it, benefits, extra workload?

One post above, I see a longer post, but very useful in detailing what the effects of the problem patch have been for him. Well thought-out, well expressed. I can't say that I'd match that level of discourse with each post, but it's a better example than just lashing out as my quoted post has done.

Is this another of CCP's craptastic patches that fixes PVP and little else. Glad you actually test (not apparent) before releasing suspect code. Minor patch followed by two fix patches with release notes that won't be released until the patch is released. Too little too late I guess. Even Microsoft admits to their failures how CCP take a stand admit they screwed the player community by not rolling back and expect everyone to accept developers failures and still pay you for them. Too many bugs, too many attempted mass testing to fix PVP issues while breaking other areas that worked although not well worked...
To all those who will ask for my stuff, if I quit and cancel my 5 accounts I will pay the fee and transfer my accounts to friends as well as my billions of assets. Not sure EVE is worth playing with the focus that is being given by CCP. Where is CSM? Where are the requests put forward by CSM? CSM means nothing to CCP. They will deploy what they want to when they want to... Epic Fail if you are not in PVP.
List of Broken Things: * Double entries in space overview. * Stations and Space objects present in overview from systems long since left. * PI, Import/Export Broken. * Longer space load time leaving stations while putting pilot at risk as they are viewable by other players while graphic loading. (CCP cover up.) * LP Store, unable to buy items 10s of thousands of LP less then you have even though you meet the requirements with both isk and LP.
... Feel free to add what I haven't already encountered, help CCP determine the rest of their bugs they are unable to fix or realease notes for. ...

I'm only going to address this part of your post, since the rest is just BAAAAW YOU BROKE MY GAEM. There are actually a few CSM requests included in this next expansion, 14 actually. In this specific scenario, what do you want the CSM to do? Say "Yo, CCP, your patches suck. Make them suck less." Because CCP clearly releases crap patches on purpose just to spite you.

Really do you read? There have been to articles in popular gaming magazines that quote the head of development as well as the CEO saying that the CSM is important to them but have put the CSM's request on hold for the next year to deliver what CCP thinks will be future off shoots for expansion. I guess you strickly stick to forums and can't be bothered to read out side forums. Can you quote the items the CSM have put forward that will be in the winter expansion or do you plan to stay vague in your view?

Word on the street is that the majority of issues that showed up in this actual patch were also noticed and pointed out on the test server during the testing phase of the patch. If so, why was the patch released in its current hilariously terrible state, and why did the first optional patch not resolve even half the issues pointed out before? Should we expect more of the same from this upcoming optional patch?

And I think it is indeed constructive at this juncture to rage or even f'ing rage-quit. CCP obviously doesn't give a s*** about their customers as long as new customers keep coming in. They basically said as much to CSM.

WOW! Those are some added benefits by CSM to EVEscape. Only thing really worth while is Rockets balance and that is on the maybe list. You mean to tell me I might be able to rename a ship from across the universe that is in my hanger. Woot! How about more tracking on the market more than the 24 hour roll up? You pointing to CSM success is a joke. That in itself should be posted as Epic Fail. I went to Iceland drank your beer and got players the ability to rename ships. I see a lot of shoulds and maybes but no definites. WTF are you reading?

Why has there not been more transparency from CCP regarding the last update(forced). I wouldn't mind that they dropped the ball and released some poor code, that did introduce some improvements but mainly broke a lot of things, if they could publicly take responsibility for the update.
What does rile me is the apparant disregard for the situation and the 'business as usual' appearance of everything. I think that a dev-blog covering the last patch would go a long way to resolving some of the frustration that many players have.
Mistakes happen and that is something that I can accept, but the mature approach is to learn from mistakes made. But what is unacceptable behaviour is when your mistakes affect others (which they invariably do) and your attitude is one of sweeping things under the rug and trying to push them from recent memory.
100k skillpoints were doled out recently to offset some extended downtime, but that downtime was no-where near as long as the 8hr blackout during 1.1. Does this mean that this patch is so bad that we don't deserve a reward for having to swallow it??
CCP I want to like you as the developer of my favourite game but you're making it such hard work!
tl:dr - Dev blog covering the whole recent patch incident, and a little something for the players to say sorry!

* Stacked chat windows resetting position on login. * Windows not staying in the position they were moved to when closed. * Windows bouncing around to other places on the screen when another window is closed.
What exactly is this optional patch meant to do again? Because it sure as hell doesn't appear to have fixed anything on my clients.

The problem with this window is that the column "required items" (things like tags, modules, ...) can sometimes appear, but most times it's either blank or the lines are scrambled without relation to the actual offer.

Patch notes are now up and, for your convenience, i have copy and pasted them below. The patch notes can also be viewed in the regular patch notes page.
Patch notes for Tyrannis 1.1 Optional Patch
To be deployed October 5, 2010
Skills
* When moving skills into the skill queue, there was no skill book icon just a blank rectangle. This has been fixed.
Planetary Interaction
* All pending structure placements in Planetary Interaction will now correctly display as yellow icons. * Scrolling through the processor pin schematic window will no longer affect the planet mode zoom. * Fixed an issue where exporting via launchpad occasionally failed.
Agents & Missions
* The Loyalty Point store now displays the correct number of required items.
Starbases, Outposts & Stations
* The control tower management window now shows "Put online" and "Change type" instead of "Put" and "Change". * In the sovereignty dashboard, only the first word in the location name was displayed, this has been fixed and the full name is now displayed.
User Interface
* The password for a chat channel is now shown correctly when editing the details of a channel. * Fixed an issue where errors would be created while right clicking multiple probes. * When using CTRL + Up to select previous chat submissions will now place the cursor at the end of the line. * The move items sound effect now plays correctly. * The welcome screen for trial accounts is now bigger and better. * Fixed an issue where stacking chat channels created client errors. * Message boxes are less transparent so the text is easier to read. * The alert sound is no longer played when opening the scanner. * The sound effect is now correctly played when activating modules. * The People & Places window no longer jumps to the front over other windows when jumping/docking. * Windows will now retain their size when you open and close them. * Pinned windows are again persistent after re-logging or closing the windows. * Snapped windows stay put after closing another snapped window. * Pinned windows are again persistent after re-logging or closing the windows. * A stacked window will now open in the appropriate location after closing and reopening. * The icons on the fitting screen are now sized correctly. * The snap indicators will now help you again when resizing the window, just like they used to. * Cargo scanner window size and position will no longer change when you re-scan. * Fixed an issue where the chat channel window order was rearranged during a session change. * Tech 3 blueprints now render correctly. * The labels in the Fitting Preview are now shown correctly. * The cursor is now located correctly when changing market orders. * Fixed an issue where the corporation logo creator was off center. * Partially trained skills now display correctly in the character sheet. * Copy and paste will now copy the correct portion of text in the chat window. * Fixed an issue where dragging the certificate planner over a stack of windows created exceptions. * Wreck windows will no longer open in the center of the screen, but in the same location as the last moved window, or any stack of wrecks. * The Drones window now renders the action labels correctly. * Amount/Price columns did not auto-size correctly. They now size themselves correctly so that you can see the full text. * The Federal Intelligence Office requested their logo back. We had just had our morning coffee, and gave them their logo back.
In Game Browser
* Fixed the 'trust request' notification pop-up from websites
Miscellaneous
* When moving items, the cursor is now anchored in the top left corner of the items, as it previously did. * System channels, such as Local, now persist correctly and cannot be closed.

Why dont they just rollback to Tyrannis 1.0? And then test out things thouroughly before releasing the next patch. Tyrannis 1.1 introduced so many errors, we'll be awaiting fixes and patches for weeks, only to fix the errors introduced with the Tyrannis 1.1 patch.

Most issues with tyrannis 1.1 seem to be client/user interface issues. My guess is the python upgrade broke more than they imagined (and was not tested properly).

Hmm, what about the problem with the Assets window? I don't see that on the list of fixes. If you had it open when docking with a station, it would blank out entirely and then never repaint until you closed and re-opened it.

My bets are on some kind of corification of the UI.. the Carbon group carved the thing probably out of the eve-client and now the Eve-Devs try to get the interface working again so that it workandlooksandfeels like before.. CCP?

Edited by: LHA Tarawa on 05/10/2010 11:57:55 I hope these fixes have resolved the massivly higher cpu usage, lag, etc.
All the podding that is happening because they turned the client into a cpu hog is making for good business at he LP store, but has also eliminated my reason for having more than one account.
I used to run 3 clients at 60% cpu on my 2ghz single core. Now I'm at 80+% cpu with one client. Pegged at 100% with 2 clients, and unplayable with 3.

Edited by: Delarado on 05/10/2010 12:00:03 I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that since the last patch when you browse corporate assets in corporate hangers remotely through the "corporation" neocom button and subsequent "assets" tab, any hanger division that you expand automatically goes to the top of the list.
E.g lets say in the corp hanger in Jita you have the following list of hanger divisons:
Ammo Mods PLEX Ships W/E Else
You expand the "plex" hanger division. Pre-Patch, it would expand and stay in place where it is; between mods and ships. Now, it goes right to the top above ammo, and if you then expand a hanger division below it, that one goes to the top.
This is extremely annoying. Is it gonna be fixed?!

Just had a look at the patch notes, really optimistic!
But i would like to take a moment to speak for those who were in the issues threads telling people that they were overreacting by telling CCP what their issues were and that they should look through the bugs to see the gem of a game.
On behalf of these people i would like to request all the bugs be immediately re-introduced to keep this extra level of enjoyment in the game!!!!

I also know that how ever much they test and try to make sure that things won't go wrong.. it takes 1 typo for the **** to hit the fan....
and even if its programmed *perfectly* then still stuff will happen when it interacts with different computersetups.
CCP shows us devotion by giving us patches as fast as they can sadly this also means that they get overworked and prolly make mistakes faster.

Screw it. I've just jettisoned all the crap from all 6 accounts into space. You have 2 hours to figure out what systems if you "want my stuff" before the cans all go pop. The ships from each account will be floating nearby, so get yer scanners out.

Yes it worked.
As for bugs, I did notice one, new chat windows will open stacked with old ones, but the first chat window you open will still open in the bottom left corner of screen.
Other than that, seems good.

FYI the market window still doesnt automatically show borders between colums when you select an item.
So you have too double click the right or left border of the colum in which it says price.
Not very handy plus isk value isnt in total view untill you double click the border of the colum.
But for the rest, great quick fix CCP

Hello CCP,
i usually dont do that, but i need to whine a bit:
First you implement a patch, this one was bugged, then you implemented an optional patch for the patch, this one worked for me, then you implemented an optional patch #2 and delete #1, which is from my point of view not a patch, its a refactor and not optional for me but mandatory. I have now #2 and i just tried to link Characters in an evemail, wont work, unless you mark a few letters before the character names and ignore the last ones. Looking forward to find more stuff.
btw, it would be GREAT if you bring a mandatory optional patch #3 you provide it in the download area as an offline patch, as my internet connection sucks the first two weeks of a month because german internet companys suck and it needs about 15 minutes per client per computer to download one of them.
So, now that i unvealed myself as a german nerd with multiple machines and clients im just gonna wait until friday or so, when you make a mandatory optional reinstall (redownload) for the whole client.

I think whats probably closer to the truth is that the 'man at the top' has his vision of what will happen, and basically, things WILL happen on the dates he has outlined. Im 100% certain QA knew that this would create problems, but were over-ruled in order to keep the whole caboodle running on the deadlines already created/agreed by 'him up there'.

I'm pleased with these patches because...
1. I've seen many EVE patches/expansions that cripple my game play and are not fixed for several months until the next major patch comes out.
2. I like the faster response repair patches with frequent posts from the GMs. I feel like they're listening.
3. These patches aren't available for manual download CCP made them installable from in game. Though I prefer the manual patching this in game install method does work on my linux system!

I still don't get why you have to Log Into the game to download the patch. Then the client updates itself, restarts, and you have to log in again to play. *shrug*
It appears they did fix things with this second patch. I previously had "lag" when changing characters. When I would select another character the portrait took a second or two longer to change out. Now it works fine. As far as problems with the UI, not sure yet.
CCP thanks for the speedy fix(es).

This is what i dont understand? the system is full of bugs and this latest down load is a perfect example of the problems in this game! when we lose a ship do to our mistake of coarse you should not replace it. but when we lose a ship or asset due to problems with the game why the hell dont u make it right the gm are a joke! ccp needs to get its house in order! and u need to conect with players more than you do! your! your worst enemy on player count! and with your new trailer no wonder there is a hugh black market for isk and ships, u incurage the activity!

Cannot auto download 2nd patch, After clicking "Yes" download bar times out.. Ive been forced to click "no" and I now find the earlier advertised option to download later after "Escape" has gone.
Now I p[lay from a Dongle and a full download is what 2gb.. more than 2 months allowance of internet.. yup.. sad but true.. I'm screwed... because CCP don't appear to have actioned a manual patch download.
Please rectify this the game is too buggy to play.

I have yet to see anything game breaking with any of these patches. The whining entertains me as it seems none of you really understand this process. They are updating UI fixes with this optional patch. They probably had one or two interns or new employees do it. The bugs are so minor that you guys are making it seem much worse than it really is. I personally have experienced few game glitches and nothing that breaks EVE for me. For those of you (the majority) who obviously have no programming experience let me explain something to you. There is no magical formulas that make games, it takes hard work and many times (especially with EVE since it does seem very physics equation oriented.) people make mistakes. This is not a fast process by any means. It can take the average programmer two weeks to find some very small mistake, either with an equation or with something small like duplication on the overview. The complier does not always find 100% of bugs and glitches. The compiling program only looks for syntax errors, it doesn't check formulas. These guys are doing the best they can, they try and find the bugs based on server logs. It is not like the server tells the programmers what module, and what line of code is giving the glitches. You have the DEV Team looking over lines and lines of code. I am guessing the amount of code that EVE Online has is pretty close to a billion lines of code. Hundreds of modules to make it easier to find bugs. But it can still take days, weeks, months to isolate the bugs. They make UI fixes based on the players responses. CCP has publically announced there is at least three offices all with their own team across the globe working to fix EVE Online's bugs and expansions. I have seen no bugs in these patches that destroy the game for me. You people don't realize that the QA team is doing what they are supposed to. The QA team doesn't fix things they report problems to the programmers. So in short keep your pants on..stop trying to drive people away from EVE and stop trying to make CCP employees look incompetent. That is no way to get the fixes that are needed. I figure I am either lucky to not experience bugs that make me want to quit, but of course I properly maintain my file system. (Clean all the temporary files, delete all the errors in the registry, and defrag all weekly to bimonthly depending on what I am doing. Doing these things really is a good idea when you play PC games a lot.) Don't act like petulant children. CCP Devs do not know where exactly the Bugs are. But with things like this I know CCP is listening to the subscribers that actually try to improve the game. It is not like error messages come with which modules failed what line of code. They actually have to find it, the error messages give an idea of where in the code the bug is. But in my experience no program has given exact code references to where a bug is. So just be patient and if you don't have anything constructive (including constructive criticism.) Then don't say it. There is much more going on than you really think.

Patch 1, optional patch 2, and this one all went great for me.
Never really had many problems anyway, some chat windows moved, but that only takes a few seconds to fix. Double overview bug? Sure, clicked on another tab and back, it went away... I really don't see why everyone has so much sand in their vaj...
Seriously, it takes much less brain power and effort to work around these little things that it does to write some sperging mess on the forums about how angry you are at CCP and that the game is going so downhill for making you click something a little bit more and yet you people still do it...
I think you guys need to sit down and realize, "hey, it's an ever-evolving video game, there will be bugs".
If you want to play a finished video game, I hear Super Mario 3 has been done for awhile, it should be good to go.
The EVE community has sadly turned into the WoW community. *sigh*
Oh well, toodles o/

I read as far as ^, hello yet another know it all 'programmer' come to school people on why it is alleged professionals can get away with releasing broken/buggy products all the while having ignored reports of said bugs from players, you should work on using the ENTER key more.

Edited by: Liandra Xi on 06/10/2010 09:30:05 Thankyou CCP the 2nd optional patch has finally fixed all of the UI glitches I was experiencing, which has made me much happier than I have been the past few days.
For the idiot above (Orange Lagomorph) trying to downplay the significance of the bugs, I can assure you that if you had experienced them it would have driven you bonkers as well every time you logged in one of your clients to find your 10+ carefully ordered and stacked chat windows had all unstacked themsevles and you had manually restack them all, or whenever you opened assets window, or people and places, or scanner, etc.. the window would be in the wrong place and wrong size, or your chat windows resetting in size on login, or when you close another pinned window all your other pinned windows move across the screen and you had to move them back. I can assure you it made EVE very annoying to play during this time, so STFU if you didn't experience the problems and just be glad you weren't affected.

And of course,
the fact that the client STILL CRASHES?
imho a client that crashes randomly CANNOT be used for pvp, CANNOT be used to run lvl 4 missions, CANNOT be used for sleeper sites, or nullsec anything...
which, turns eve into a glorified mining + trading simulation game...
I will not pay for a glorified mining + trading sim, will you?
WHY did you release 1.1 tyranis WHEN YOU KNEW it was not ready???

Expecially when CCP states they refactored UI (something usually involving the vision and experienced programmers) but you say "They probably had one or two interns or new employees do it"

There appears to be some fixes made that are not included in the patch notes, in addition some of the fixes clearly do not work.
At this point I have lost faith in CCP to patch correctly, and so I will echo the words so often told to me by my teachers...

Originally by: Vaerah Vahrokha Could someone explain me what did this latest patch fix? I still have show info boxes always go to center of screen and the sound that should be heard when clicking on module is still absent.
Also, the drag and drop that uses the center of the modules as anchor instead of the left corner is nasty like crazy.
I share the first problem, second was fixed for me. * Info always in the center, the same size (too small, btw). * No sound on releasing items after drag and drop.
However the icon of the item moves out of the way of the cursor (like before 1.1 patch) - at least for me. Also most other issues (windows reseting to top left corner + many other little tricks) seems to be fixed. This second optional patch was definitely right step. Keep them coming. :-) Well done.

Windows still appear in middle of screen when "show info" opted for, neither do they remember where you dragged them to next time.
Someone opening a convo/channel invite still opens said window in the bottom left, too small, doesnt remember resizing either.
Overview still twitching between tabs randomly, annoying when trying to deploy, then use drones.

NOTE: This is not the case for me. windows seem te reset every time opened. cans in cargohold etc. this problem seems to be solved for different players (according to the help channel) - but not for all. clearing cache didn't work

Forward and back buttons will and always have disappeared from the show info window if you stack anything other than info on top of them.
