The new character creation and customisation process will be available in the new Sisi build that is being deployed today as promised in a recent devblog by CCP t0rfifrans. The comment thread for the blog can be found here.
As stated in that devblog there are quite a few things in this version of the character creator that should be considered work in progress (WIP), this post will attempt to list the things that we already know are not working correctly and what sort of feedback we are looking for at this stage of development. I will do my best to update the OP with useful data so please check it out before posting to see if there has been an update.
Known issues: - all art assets are WIP, this is especially true for hair - the portrait you create is not actually used in the client, this depends on another backend system that is not in place on Sisi yet - some of the UI in the portrait step (lighting color, face pose) doesn't actually do anything at the moment - Mac client will not load an avatar on highest shader setting (enable fastcharacters setting for a temporary workaround) - low graphics settings look very bad, this feature is best enjoyed with the shader setting on high - the very first screen in character creation, the one where you select your race, bloodline and gender is WIP - there is a texture seam between head and body - alt tabbing will make the avatar a black silhouette - sculpting limits are WIP - certain SM2 hardware may crash (set shader to low and enable fastcharacters), please post your hardware specs if you fall into this category
Tips: - Females have more completed assets than males, this is just down to the order in which these are being finalized - We plan to add a form of undo/redo before release - We plan to add a randomising feature before release
Points we are particularly looking for feedback on: - Usability concerns, how easy is the feature to use? Please provide some reasoning with your feedback in this area. - Crashes or complete failure to load. We are very interested in hardware specs or detailed repro steps for any sort of crashing or complete mechanical failures.
You are of course still free to post things like "This sucks, Incarna is useless" but we'd rather keep this thread on track with some reasonable discussion regarding the character creator aspect of the Incursion expansion launch. ------------------ Tester, Scrum Master Quality Assurance

Edited by: Syuveil on 06/10/2010 17:15:53 heh, complete crash after selecting gallente/gallente/male and clicking approve
at first everything except background and the sort of a progress status in the left top corner disappeared, looked as if it was loading, then the screen went black, and 30 secs after that i got the blue screen of death
specs: intel core 2 duo t7200 @ 2 GHz nvidia geforce go 7600 2 GB ram (it's a compal hel80 laptop) os win 7 ultimate x64, build 7600
i'll try running again with low shaders now.
EDIT: runs ok with low shaders, so add my hardware to the SM2 problem list

My male Caldari Deteis character (the one I'm posting from) had no eyes/black eyes, and I couldn't change that. I too need an epic beard, by the way!
All graphics settings on low. OS X 10.6.4, Radeon X1600.

Please say you're going to add a slider/option to change skin tone. Also, would be nice to know a little more about what each slider does. For example, the scarring/aging - there's 2 sets of sliders, but it's hard to tell what each is doing, exactly. Still playing with it so I'll have more later.

There was a lot of clipping but this is WIP so not sure how useful "reporting" that will be.
It seemed to take awhile for newly selected options to show up.
Some items should really have a selectable list rather than sliders; clothes, hair, etc, so they can be more easily kept track of.
When choosing a heavily overweight setting for Gallente/Jin Mei, his neck will appear to be much fatter than it should be compared to the rest of his body; his neck will literally be bubbling over with fat but the rest of him will only be a "little chubby". Btw serious kudos on the overweight feature, far too many games have no capability to play a big blundering fatty, which is awesome.
Freckles didn't seem very noticable. Scarring and aging did produce nice results. ___________________________________________ The Hero of Kamela The Terror of Tararan The Executioner of Ezzara |

The spinning thing to change traits feels too fluid, I wish it would lock into place on settings as you're spinning.
Hair colors are totally messed up for Amarr Females (haven't tried other combos yet).
Are accessories going to be implemented eventually? I'd hate for my Gallente Male to lose his blast shield hat.

I must say ... some of the artwork for the clothing looks bloody damn fine!
I'm guessing you wanted to move away from sliders for the sculpting? As it is, it's rather awkward clicking and dragging. Possibly show a slider when you click and hold a part of the face so you can see how much you've moved the face. I know you say the limits are WIP, but it'd still make it easier to gauge how much of a change you're making.
Possibly introduce some buttons to active preset views of the character, i.e. straight on, 45 degrees to the right, side on, etc., so you can quickly snap to different views.
Again, relating to the sculpting limits, I had a few occasions where each bit of the face looked fine on it's own, but, put together, there were some bumps and harsh angles. Possibly have a button that automatically resize facial features so the skin remains smooth and looks realistic.
-EDIT-
When you select on the 'Clothes' button on the second stage, if you select parts of the body, the spinny thing on the right changes, but it doesn't change on the left, e.g. if I select 'Bottomouter' on the Clothes menu and then click the feet on the avatar, when I spin the spinny thing on the right, it'll alter the feet, even though I've still got 'Bottomouter' selected on the left.

looking good so far, would hope to see tattoos make it into there some where, also skin tone.
had a few issues with his lower clothing glitching through the outer clothing, also any chance of being able to adjust the neck length.
oh and also is there a way of going back over it again, becaused once i selected approve it wont let my test it again. also is it normal that once i've chosen the new look, that it does not update my avatar ingame yet.

Edited by: Rokhy Bhalboah on 06/10/2010 18:44:07 Characters, at least for most bloodlines, need some form of hair by default. Eyebrows in particular. Sculpting a hairless character, then tacking some hair on can have some unexpectedly ugly results. The randomizer could solve this, but personally I see no excuse to a completely hairless character by default - it makes them all look the same.
Also, body decorations/tattoos. That stuff has got make it in.
One issue in particular I have with the new designs is the look of, well, everything. Do not forget that EVE takes place far in the future, and beware of replacing the current futuristic designs with contemporary ones. Why would an Amarr female wear the same as a Gallente female? Or for that matter, why would any of them wear Generic Bimbo Outfit #2354? Where are all the fancy ethnic clothing and hair styles? Being modeled in, I hope.
DO NOT make EVE Second Life in Space.

Damn you, Laptop! Why fail me now?!
No crashes, but very very slow. But what I've seen i like so far. Being that slow actually produces some cool effects when changing clothes: bumpmap/shader of clothing already applied, but not the texture -> funky body mods (no silver d*** tho )
Seems like i have to wait till I can use my desktop to really play around with it.
@devs: Am I guessing right that the new character creation works similarly to the old one back in the days, as in it using everything the engine and hardware can give it to render the avatar?

How many years have you been working on this? Looks like you started only recently.
Well it's incredibly limited atm, any body modification leads to clipping issues, texture quality on clothing is bad, the range of vertical movement is too limited, you cannot create an actual "portrait", i.e. a face only shot, the round inner and outer dials to select options are counter-intuitive to me (I'm not a console player, I guess that's how they do it there) - the sculpting part works well though (but is rather too limited IMO), for the portrait a freeform character pose selection would add to more variety, and finally this sucks, Incarna is useless.
PS: On the UI part we now have 3 different approaches to user interfaces, the flying in space UI, the PI UI and the character creation UI. While the flying in space UI is broken enough does it really make sense to throw consistency over board and redesign the wheel for each new feature from now on? --

Sculpting seems limited, and its very hard to control how the morphing advances. For example modifying the chest is very hard to do with a mouse on a 2d surface while trying to control a 4 axis modification. Very awkward process.
On the circles with the red drag dot, for example in the Freckles, Scars, Age, and Weight. It is possible to click somewhere on the ring instead of dragging. But for other Selection circles on like clothing where there are ticks you can not click on the circle by the tick and get it to go to that position, it jumps around randomly.
On Clothing Selection, where shirt meet pants the models don't seem to play very nicely with each other. Probably trivial but still something to keep in mind.

I think that the inner track has preset levels and the outer track has a more fluid selection method, allowing more variance than the first.

was pretty cool but more info on what on earth you are doing would be good, either in the form of mouseover info, some textbox that changes description depending on what you are doing or some form I have not imagined. Also, is it correct that the whole "sculpting"thing doesn't work? well, it works but it just gives me a thick neck. I assume it is jury-rigged into the "weight" slider but it feels very wip.

The dial (honestly, just a round slider) used in place of the old style slider is not as easy to use. Also, once you have gone through all the options, it's harder to find the one you liked. This is also true of the click and drag sculpting.
Sculpting also seems to takes longer, and be more complex, than the traditional method, but the final look would be the same.

I think the ability to save "versions" while creating would be good. Then you can click on a version, and compare, and alter it. Say you get 5 versions you can save, that save little thumbs that get displayed along the right-hand side.

pros: characters look awesome, too realistic can regulate breasts size cons: well many, it's obvious that this thing is not finished yet. no point to speak under obvious stuff that I believe will be worked over just few remarks: rotating thingie is not super user friendly imho more backgrounds? not just colors question: will you make initial appearance based on current portrait? will race influence on appearance?

I could not change my hair color, and hair options much too limited. (I WANT MY LONG HAIR/DREADS DAMMIT) Needs skin color changer, couldn't change mine and that was a ****off. More backgrounds needed. I kept seeing more outfits when I rotated the dial but it would never select one, just the ones with the mark. I need eyebrows. Clothing options are far too limited.
Overall, need more racial differences. Half the fun is making fun of other races, and I'm not even a roleplayer. I just want my character to be recognizably minmatar (and recognizably every race I have an alt of, etc)
So I guess it's a start. Needs a lot of work.
Oh right also noticing the lower layers of clothing covering the outer.
