I think its even fair to say that eve did better than sto did at its start.
CCP had to sell board games to make enough money to buy computers to start making eve online. Cryptic already had alot of them. CCP had to deal with a publisher that almost successfully tried to drop them off the face of the earth. CCP had to overcome the fact that it was an IP nobody heard of before because they're the ones who made it. And the fact Eve online used to be 2D in the pre alpha. As much as i like Eve. If it comes to ship to ship combat Star Trek would win hands down. A stupid Frigate from Star Trek would Roflpwn an Eve Dreadnought. Star Trek technology borders on magic. They moved a friggin MOON with their warp engines, and let's not forget the I win setting on the deflector dish. torpedo that can crack a planet. They've harnessed the power of black holes. And invented some weird red goop they keep in a fancy lava lamp that creates artificial blackholes. One Startrek ship let loose in the eve universe would be like setting loose godzilla on the ancient Romans.
in STO's defense I did like thier ship combat more than eve's it was more indepth. Shields and guns had facings and going behind objects dropped lock and blocked torpedoes. But that's something eve won't have until we are all on fiberoptic networks and the cell processor is standard issue for servers.
the difference is, it takes them like five years to build their largest class of ship, which is equivalent to an EVE battlecruiser (never understood that, why not just use a giant Replicator to build their ships?)
IIRC, five years ago was around about the time when carriers and titans were first introduced to EVE.
So, in the time it takes them to produce ONE ship at a given shipyard, an EVE factory can produce thousands. Also, it's impossible to kill a capsuleer. We just get back up, strap on a new ship and come at it again.
Victory through overwhelmingly superior numbers. black hole lava lamps be damned. -

I am both a trekkie and eve player. The lore in STO was good, but the gameplay got old....fast.
Space combat consists of spamming the spacebar. Ground combat is like a buggy, laggy version of WoW with hurp derp AI.

I hate MMORPG.com as a site - full of complete tripe. The article was hardly fair, and they've added a disclaimer that says the reviewer played only a tiny amount of STO.
Not that I disagree with any of it though :D
The funniest part is the STO ragethread. I didn't bother getting too far into it, but the responses mostly seemed to be "RAGE! UNFAIR! BIAS!! TORCHES AND PITCHFORKS!! But you know, they're basically right..."

Poor STO... I almost feel bad for them.
Let's face it: We all complain about Eve but nothing even comes close. We all wish there was something 'better' but everything new fails miserably.
I look forward to the day when Eve has proper competition. People with money and discontent for Eve please continue to try and review new products for me. Until then, I'll pay my Eve subscription and wish other developers luck.

thing is while we have them beat completely on organization etc the simple fact is their ships have vastly superior weapons to ours. it's a trivial exercise for them to hit things from 30 000 km away while we range out a couple hundred km at most. their ships are so much faster than ours that we might as well be paddling rafts about. our only real hope is to invade their planets and seize their tech early on. once we somewhat equalize the tech the federation et al are doomed .

Also, the navigational deflector would abosrb most new eden weaponry. Since its job is to red-shift incoming light and deflect micrometeoroids, (rendering projectile and laser weaponry useless) the only weapon worthy of main Federation sheilds are antimatter charges.

Lasers are completely in-effective againest federation ships (you can even see that in one of the episodes of the next generation).
And antimatter charges are not detinated, just used as a very heavy projectile.

What has the largest battle in canon ST been? Wolf 359? Sacrifice of Angels? Voyager: Endgame? A trekkie fan can surely fill in the actual numbers, but I've never seen more than a couple dozen ships on-screen, maybe a hundred mentioned. EVE fleets consist of hundreds of ships at the least, thousand man deployments are not unheard of.
Ship sizes. ST fleets consist mostly of smaller and support ships, with the Galaxy being one of the best ships fielded. Compare that to a Titan or a fleet of supercarriers... yeah.
Movement. Warp 9, engage. We will arrive in two weeks. Or, you know, light a cyno and bridge in a fleet from across the universe before you can say "military experts".
EWAR. ST has the magical deflector dish, tractor beams, and that's about it. Spaceship repairs are done in spacedock, if one even survives the first few hits that penetrate the shield. EVE has ECM, warp scrambles, webs, tracking and targeting dampeners, and logistics that can fully repair a battleship in seconds, while it continues to rain antimatter death at the enemy.
Last, clones. A ST ship goes down, thousands of people die. That's it. Dead. A capsuleer just shrughs, swears a bit at lost implants, hops in a new ship and rejoins the fight with just as much strength he had before being targetted. We. Are. Invincible. ___________ EVE is dying! Now for real! |

Would like to point out that whatever the Tachyon Beam Laser is, it's definitely not a laser.
Laser = Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation Tachyon = Particle going faster then light.
Light that goes faster then light, is not light, rather it's a headache waiting to happen.

To those of you going on about ST vs eve techno war babble.
In STO the range of all weapons is 10k max. Past 30k they can't even see you. Once engaged in combat you cannot warp off either so we dont even need a warp scram
A single Apoc fitted for 180km = the devil himself.

I played STO for a while (while AFK mining in EvE on my laptop).
The problem with STO PvP is getting the Klingons to show up. I thought they had excellent PvP scenarios, really fun, pitting faction against faction and NPC's tossed in for both sides to deal with (in some cases). Trouble was, you could never count on the Klingons showing up. So I rolled a Klink, and guess what, we got our asses kicked due to imbalanced population.
It is my personal opinion that STO PvP is a lot more fun than EvE PvP, but it is that same problem of finding opponents and finding really good quality fights. Maybe the population imbalance is better now, IDK, but the STO mechanics of PvP are a pure blast IMO.

In a battle between EVE and ST:O, I'd have to say that ST:O would eventually win.
The reason, of course, is that when an EVE ship dies, a replacement must be built at some point, then stocked.
ST:O ships consume no ammo and are replaced in 30 seconds (max) with all fittings intact.
They'd eventually get us, but only after logistics ran out of mats and our guns finally ran out of ammo. (Shut it, you Amarrians ) _______________________________

I'm 99% sure that in the ST universe, ships take a *year* or more to produce and crew. We have dozens of *production lines* of ships coming out of stations *daily*. And ST (Federation anyway) ships have capacitors for the Phaser banks (Not to mention torpedoes) :x

I had quit because EVE kept lying about WIS and had been out for like 2 years. I was one of the first klingons to level 5 and all I did was PVP the whole way.
It was really lol staying cloaked and listening to the fed whines. But the fact is if we did uncloak we died because the feds would just stay turtled all the time so we couoldn't pick any of you off.
STO sucks balls anyway after you're done with the pvp thing all you have is a map, a bunch of lines and some retarted douchbag sitting there in the station alone.

There are space games other than EVE? Comparing EVE and STO is like comparing fine wine and Kool Aid.
And the other space games to be? Very thin vaporware. I'll believe 'em if I see 'em. ____________________
