Aside from EVE
What is the best MMO you played? I'd have to say Ultima Online on private servers was some of the most fun I used to have. Then you started getting trolls on just about every server and it got bad.

Diaspora.
The second.
I still have the (unobfuscated) server and client source code too!
And all the art assets.

Planetside. Awesome massively multiplayer FPS. Attacking or defending bases was a great experience. Or doing more goofy stuff - going away from the front lines and capturing quiet spawn towers which then gets attention the enemy resulting in a counter attack. Which in turn makes lots of your side respond as well

I like CoH/CoV and Champions Online. The former is really starting to show its age and the latter is too new to distinguish itself.
Other than that, EvE and Wizard 101. __________________________________________________

Life. It features perma-death with no chance of re-roll - despite what some people claim - so watch out and enjoy yourself. |

Yeah but they keep adding new subscription fees, and then there's all the friendly fire to worry about. |

I'm sick of the downtime personally. I mean wtf, I pay my sub regularly, I should get 24/7 access, none of this 8 hour downtime ****.

Everquest because it was my first MMORPG
But Planetside was just amazing fun, by far the best PVP out of any MMO ever made. well with the exception of EVE. Really in Planetside you could do things that changed the face of battle. if someone blew the gen of a tech plant behind the lines or an important base linking the front line base to the tech plant that means they got no more Liberators, Tanks and Reavers where they where needed. and they had to spend resources to go back and fix and make sure nobody was left in said base.
Another fun PS tactic was the infamous base drain. you would go and destroy everything in a base and drain it neutral so you could get a hacked base behind their lines and get a second set of links on them.(back once they linked the bases that is).
Planetside was very well done, sadly SOE put out those stupid mechs that ruined the game and drive the player base away.

For PC FPS Multiplayers the best is still Quake 2. That game to this day is still #1 in my mind. And Tribes was another fun one from back when.

Edited by: Istvaan Shogaatsu on 06/11/2010 00:11:23 Aside from Eve, I'd have to say MXO (Matrix Online) due to plentiful griefing opportunities on the PVP servers. Another one I liked was Shattered Galaxy, a weird korean MMORTS with terrible graphics, yet thrilling gameplay for its time.
I would like to give a shoutout to Dungeons & Dragons Online as the WORST MMO I have ever played - I had to endure countless hours of mindless, repetitive gameplay for a review article I didn't end up writing, and frequently thought of suicide during the process.

... and here we go again with semantic games and that particular dog-tired fallacy.
You may not now this, but I am secretly an agent of Cthulhu preparing my Dark Lord's comeback to wipe out the human race in 2012.
You cannot disprove this, nor you can prove it. Therefore, you do entertain this notion may be true - even if I've failed to provide a single thread of evidence to back it up - correct?

Yea but in real life I can't go pod the CEO of the banks that crashed the economy just because I saw him on a 0.0 section of the New Jersey Turnpike. the state police tend to frown apon mounting railguns on a chevy for some reason.

I can just picture someone fitting Smartbombs on an atv and going down the turnpike taking out innocent bystanders. Gets taken down by the cops and on the new camera goes "Concorddoken!"

i know i sound like a fanboi brown-noser saying this, but i've really tried to get into other MMOs and they just pale in comparison with EVE so much that i end up not bothering logging in to them for days, then weeks, then never. the things that make EVE great for me that I haven't seen together in another MMO:
i) death penalty & pvp ii) relatively little difference in pvp potential between 1 yr old char and 6 yr old char iii) RL skills predominantly determine progress, not eve skills iv) sheer scope: it's a frikkin' galaxy simulator.
what incarna needs to deliver to keep EVE on the edge: walking in ships, walking in ship hangars. make us feel like ants.

I stopped playing it after SOE ruined the game balance when they introduced the walkers. I remember being with a load of tanks and artillery pounding one these walkers and took little damage.

I would not be playing EVE if I would not think of it as the best. At the same time does one, however, always need to point out the big room for improvement here. --

Planetside. BFR's did pretty much kill Planetside though....
However, I remember the greatest problem with it was the fact that lag was pretty bad, if I do remember correctly. A lot of people really liked that game... it still stumps me as to why someone doesn't make a new one that's similar to it...

Dark Age of Camelot, pre-Trials of Atlantis expansion.
I want to say Warhammer because it is *good* game, would be a better game if EA made the decision to give Mythic more time. |
