Though this is only EVE, I would like to draw attention to what today is, to all American EVE pilots. Please, drop a veteran a line if you know one, or honor our service men and women past and present in any way you are able to.
Thank you. -------------------------------------------------------------- They call me crazy. I'm not one to argue. |

More countries than the US celebrate Veterans' Day today, as Nov 11 was the day WWI ended, though not all call it that. In Canada, today is Remembrance Day, which serves essentially the same purpose. The difference in the way the 2 countries honor the service of the service men and women is rather astounding. To me, at least, Canada seems to make Remembrance Day much more important that Veterans' Day in the US. I'm from the US, and I see this as unfortunate, and I think that the US should celebrate our veterans much more that we do.
I respect and greatly appreciate the service all veterans have done and sacrificed for us.

Edited by: Professor Tarantula on 12/11/2010 04:11:10 In Canada Rememberence day is about reflecting on the tragedy of war. Remembering those who died. In the states the ocassion seems to more about celebrating people who serve in the military.
It's important to not just thank servicemen, but think about how we shouldn't easily send them into the horror and misery of war.

This pretty much. I blame the USMC for our involvment in every major and minor war since ww2.
Prez: Hey gaiz think this war is worth it?
USMC: KILL! KILL! KILL!
Prez: kk sending you giaz in now.

You misinterpret my meaning sir. The world wars were a tragedy of astronomical proportions, they triggered the decline of the West. However, no nation may exist without a military, and often times, those who serve our military lose their lives in the process. This is not to honor killing, or weapons, or war itself. But rather to honor those who are willing to pay the ultimate price to ensure our protection.
The world is an ugly place rife with violence and vile people, in an ideal world, our military would be unnecessary, however, as mentioned before, this not no Utopia.
So maybe you choose not to except the gratitude of our citizens, but I for one know that there are many who are deserving of our honor and respect, and will gladly give it to them. -------------------------------------------------------------- They call me crazy. I'm not one to argue. |

I am going in to the marines as mentioned before. I do not like the prospect of killing, but in some cases it is a necessity. Also, a measure of imperialism would do wonders for our economy, take the Iraqis oil and begin mining the mineral deposits in the Afgahn mountains.
Your view of the marines is narrow, ignorant, and unappreciative, please, refrain from exposing yourself for a philistine and a fool again. Thanks! -------------------------------------------------------------- They call me crazy. I'm not one to argue. |

And what attitude is that? I have a Father and an uncle whom are both former marines? I know what kind of work the job requires, I also am perfectly aware of just how strenuous and taxing barracks life or deployment can be. Are you referring to the fact that I happen to be articulate? Here, let me make this more acceptable.

Again good luck with that attitude. You will be expected to take lives regardless of combatant status. Its simply the nature of the branch. Marines are the no questions asked storm troopers of the us military. Not saying that the people who serve in it are horrible people but again you will be put in situations that require a massive denial of your basic human instincts and still be expected to pull the trigger. This is unlike any other branch of service past maybe bomber pilots in the air force.
Just curious. What wars did your uncle and father participate in?

My Father never saw combat and my uncle was involved in operation desert storm. By the way, when I say I have no desire to take lives, that does not mean I am unwilling to. I am merely saying that there is no pleasure in it for me. Obviously killing is part of the job in a combat scenario. -------------------------------------------------------------- They call me crazy. I'm not one to argue. |

Killing is the entire job of the marines in a war scenario. The army is the one who occupies and the marines are the ones who take it in the first place.
But as long as you know what you are getting into I suppose.
Just saying if you start spouting that live and let live sentiment after actually joining it's not going to do you any favors.

"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder."

"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle û be Thou near them! With them û in spirit û we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with hurricanes of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with their little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it û for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen."
As for being "offed in the night", I look forward to the day someone tries it.

I like how some people get it, and separate the policy of war from the motivations of those who would put their lives on the line for others.
But let us never forget what war is really all about. Ever.

I didn't personally agree with the politics of the time (95 - 02) but, the President is the CiC so, we do what we do. It took me a bit after I got out to start being able to think as a civilian again. Refreshing I guess. I miss the Navy though, I had orders to La Maddalena, Italy for a second naval security forces assignment, but didn't get to go. Would have retired if I could have stayed, but screwed my knees up. Yay 50% VA disability.
