Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to click on this page!
There are many surveys and researches being carried out at the moment, very few of them are trying to understand gamers. But this is about to change!. The psychology community is trying to understand what motivates people to play a game and would very much appreciate your participation.
If you could please give us no more than 5 minutes of your time to complete this survey at www.lsbugame.com you will greatly help the psychology and game community!
Thank you!

If this is about the "psychology community" the website should at the very least name the academic institution by which this survey is done so interested people can check that the researcher does indeed share his/her results with the "community" (i.e. publish).
Otherwise we might be inclined to think that this is a profit-driven venture and there is no real inclination to share the results with the community.
/thumbs down in the present state
(I know some people who do very similar surveys/research on social gaming as part of a consultancy gig, therefore my scepticism)

while this is nice, i expected as much since glue was applied. But I agree with pinkerton up here, that the least one could do was let us know which institution we are supporting here. 'psychological community' is just way too vague.

To be honest i see playing any mmo about the same as any other hobby. There are some ppl that take it to the extreme and there are others that see it as no more than a way to spend personal time. The thing i really love about eve is i can hop on and play a few hours do a couple of missions or sell some things in jita or i could just log on for a few set my que and watch some tv before bed or work. That is the reason i was drawn back to the game (after playing another mmo that will not be named )Although the funny thing is i play completely solo and rarely ever talk to anyone. My roommate is allways wondering why i play mmo games and hardly ever talk to anyone hehe.

Filled out the survey since I put psychology down as my third choice for degree study next year - who knows, maybe I'll be writing one of these one day and asking other EVE players to fill it out

Edited by: Anyura on 25/11/2010 17:47:29 I don't endorse this product or service.
Researchers aren't interested in finding out that gamers are no more messed up than people that watch TV, play sports or whatever. They like to carefully select data drawn from surveys such as this, spin it to paint us as a bunch of murdering deviants and then hand it over to the media for headlines and to attract more research funding.

If you take the survey, the questions are worded to pretty much mean this.

Nonsense.
This is the second one of these sort of surveys i have completed from this forum. Both seemed to have been translated into English from some other language and the questions were, to use a technical term, dopey.
Does not describes me well...jesus christ.

I wanted to help you, and started on the form. About halfway on step 3, I had to stop though, the pain was too much.
If you want people to help you with this sort of thing, you really need to use more time on the questions. Statements like "feel others emotions" are pure nonsense. While I can guess what you are trying to measure, I feel very disrespected. And of course, no one wants to help someone who disrespects you.
In my view the categories and the statements doesn't always match very well, it would be better if you just used a straight 1-5 scale all the way, or stuck with categories that fitted all statements. A bit more explanation would be useful too.
If I were your professor, I would have failed you on the survey form alone. And if I'm going to be your little white mouse, I expect a better built maze than this.
You description of the research didn't match the form (at least the parts I did) very well either. And this sort of research has been done before. Often very badly (not as badly as you form though)
I realize this is a very negative comment, but I think you are really going in a very wrong direction here and wanted to give you some hopefully constructive criticism. I'm not very good at wrapping up things nicely though so this might seem a bit harsh, but when I spend my time typing this it's not only to scold you for waisting my time, but I'm also motivated by a hope that given some correction you might improve a bit.
I wish you the best but want to suggest that you use a bit more time on your studies and a bit less time on EVE/Beer/wimmen/the telly/whatever.

Edited by: Ash Donai on 25/11/2010 20:41:01 Why do you need a survey to figure out that people game because real life sucks? If real life would be more entertaining or enticing then people wouldn't spend time on games. Time is a limited resource, whichever gives you the most pleasure is what you do the most.
Not that hard of a concept really.
Edit; The survey is also poorly designed, for example: "I flare up quickly but get over it quickly", here you have no idea whether any of the answers mean that one flares up quickly but doesn't get over it quickly. The answers don't match the question.
In fact I just abandoned the survey altogether because of extremely poorly worded questions/statements and answers that didn't go along with the question/statement at all. Whatever prof reviewed these questions is one glaring example why public education is in the crapper.

I went about 20% of part 3, however that part suck so much, so I simply quit.
English is not my native language, and questions like: "At times I feel I have gotten a raw deal out of life." just sucks. I have no idea what that means. And many times the answers simply does not match the question. So it's badly designed form. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shields are like pants, they're supposed to come off. I would like to echo the complaints that the questions are not properly worded. Since English is my mother tongue, I was able to complete the survey easily enough, but others may have difficulty understanding it.
But just to clarify for those who do not know:
getting a "raw deal out of life" means that you were given a life which you did not deserve. An example of such could be being born to poor parents, and being unable to attend school because of this, thus preventing you from getting a job. It implies a sense of injustice, inequality or some sort of undeserved pain. The question here is whether or not you *FEEL* that there are external factors preventing you from achieving happiness in life.
"Feel other's emotions" is referring to empathy - i.e. the ability to not only recognize another person's happiness or sadness, but to also put these own emotions onto yourself. For example, if you have a friend and they tell you excitedly that they just got an awesome job, you genuinely feel excited also. Likewise, if a friend tells you that their parent/spouse/close relative died in a horrible accident, you genuinely feel sad because of this.
My main problem with the survey is that the questions are worded improperly, and there are several questions which are similar, or identical with different wording. ----------

Legitimate or not, the fact that this thread is stickied creates the wrong impression that CCP is endorsing this misleading and (to me at least) offensive survey. De-sticky this and move it to OOPE. I would encourage people to report the OP and ask for this.

Understand what motivates people to play?
All these questions sound like they would be used to slander the gaming community.
have you ever skipped important events to play a game are you ever angry you cant play do people fail to reduce your game time etc etc

Just do what I did and answer the exact opposite of the way they are expecting the results to pan out. It's a survey for a psychology student, it's not interested in the truth; it's interested in getting him a pass mark.

I have done the survey, but this at the end isn't a good sign:
Quote: If you think that your internet use is causing you problems you can check this sites for more information: http://www.netaddiction.com
It seem to point to a bias on the part of the person doing the survey.
For the other not native English speakers: "feeling blue" mean "being depressed".
