1.0 - Scope This FAQ covers the 'Improved Cloaking Device II', 'Prototype Cloak' and 'Covert Ops Cloaking Device II' devices only.
2.0 - What is a cloaking device? A cloaking device is a module which is mounted on your ship in a highslot. When activated it renders you invisible or 'cloaked'.
3.0 - How long does cloaking take? About 1 second.
4.0 - How long does de-cloaking take? Decloaking only takes a second, however once you've decloaked you can't target anything for around 20secs, this is called 'Sensor recalibration time' and is modified by your cloaking skill. Different cloaks have different recalibration times. It is worth noting that you can actually start targetting sooner as long as the actual lock doesn't resolve before the end of this 'recalibration' period. Best approach is to start trying to lock as soon as you decloak.
5.0 - Can you be seen whilst cloaked? Nope, whilst cloaked you are completely invisible. You can't be seen or targetted. There is a possibility that you can be Smartbombed, this will not damage you but will force you to uncloak.
6.0 - What restrictions are there to a cloaked vessel? Whilst cloaked you are under the following restrictions:
1. You can't Target anything 2. You can't warp (Except with the Covert Ops Cloak) 3. You move slower (Exact speed loss depends on the cloaking module used) 4. You can't Launch Drones 5. You can't open cans 6. You can't collect loot 7. You can't Activate Smartbombs 8. You can't use FOFs 9. You can't change Ammo Types 10. You can't use a MWD 11. You can't activate a docking sequence 12. You can't jump through a Stargate 13. You can't activate Armour repairers or Structure Repairers 14. Essentially you can't activate *any* modules whilst cloaked. 15. You can't Releod weapons or charges 16. You can't perform a scan probe analysis
7.0 - Can I Jump through Stargates when Cloaked? As stated above, No. However with some careful timing and a bit of luck you can get through gates *mostly* undetected.
1. A Cloaked Ship Approaches the Stargate. 2. Once you are at 2.5km, press the decloak button 3. Wait half a second then 'Jump' 4. On the otherside, you start cloaked but this isn't a proper 'cloak' 5. Start moving in a random direction 6. Quickly press the 'cloak' button, you will 'blink' on peoples scanners then dissapear again.
This method can be used to evade blockades, be aware that a savvy pirate will have his frigs MWDing to your last known position to try and force you out of 'cloak'.
Warning: Jumping through stargates like this is prone to misjump unless you wait the half second before firing the jump sequence. In Exodus build v2.03.3106 it is possible to 'jump' but have your ship remain in space, even though you can't see it. Your ship can be targetted and destroyed because of this. Also the logs will not show that this has happened and you will not receive reimbursement!
8.0 - When can't I cloak? You can't cloak when within 2Km of another object. You are also unable to cloak when you are targetted by another player or NPC, this can be a real pain if you are trying to get out of trouble!
Be warned that there is a bug with targetting that will effect the cloaking device: If you are targetted, and move out of range, unless the targetting ship attempts to activate a module on you, they retain the target lock. This means you can be 500km away or more and still targetted by another frig. Rendering you unable to cloak!
9.0 - Can I be forced to uncloak? Yes. If you get within 2km of ANY object you forcibly uncloak. You will also uncloak if you get hit by a smart bomb.

I haven't tried, but I think it would be hard to make good insta-jump bms with cloaked ship. Cause you'd have to make sure to stay away from the gate at 2km, it can mess up your trajectory and offset the bookmark to bad position

Edited by: Hygelac on 13/01/2005 21:21:25 Bah word limit ate my FAQ :D
10.0 - How much Cap does it use? The cloaking device requires no cap to activate and stays active until you switch it off or an object gets too close Note that it is sometimes possibile to get closer than 2km to a fixed structure such as a Starbase or Stargate without decloaking. This is an intermitant bug.
11.0 - Does it work against NPCs? Yes, but the usual restrictions apply, and remember that NPCs target insanely fast! They also have a tendency to roam around the belts.
12.0 - What are the fitting requirements/attributes of the 'Improved Cloaking device II'?
Skills : Electronics Lvl5 Cloaking Lvl3 Fitting : HiSlot 60 CPU 5 MW Attributes: -40% Scan resolution! 20 Sec Recalibration Time 0.25% Velocity (i.e. 25% of your max) Volume : 100m3
13.0 - What are the fitting requirements/attributes of the 'Prototype Cloaking device'?
Skills : Electronics Lvl5 Cloaking Lvl1 Fitting : HiSlot 30 CPU 1 MW Attributes: -50% Scan resolution! 30 Sec Recalibration Time 0.1% Velocity (i.e. 10% of your max)
14.0 - What are the fitting requirements/attributes of the 'Covert Ops Cloaking Device II'? Skills : Electronics Lvl5 Cloaking Lvl4 Covert Ops lvl2* Fitting : HiSlot 5000 CPU!** 1 MW Attributes: -0% Scan resolution! (i.e. No Scan Resolution Penalty!) 10 Sec Recalibration Time 100% Velocity (i.e. No speed penalty!)
* Note, I couldnt even mount the Covert Ops Cloak until I had lvl2 Covert Ops because of the insane CPU requirements. ** Note that the 5000CPU is to prevent ships other than Covert Ops frigs from using this module. I found that with the Cheetah, I needed to train Covert Ops lvl4 just to be able to mount a decent setup.
15.0 - When does the Scan Resolution penalty apply? The Scan Resolution penalty is in effect as soon as you mount the module on your ship, this means that you will target *everything* 40%/50% slower than normally. This is a big consideration when flying a cloaked BS.
15.1 - Can I turn the module off to avoid the scanner penalty? No. Putting the module offline will not remove the Scan Resolution penalty.
16.0 - How much does the cloaking skill cost and what rank is it? Last time I looked it cost 1m on the market and there were plenty available. It is rank 6.
17.0 - What are the combat uses of a Covert Ops Frig? This is a very subjective question and is very much personal opinion, best to try it out and form your own ideas. However these are the ways in which I've used the Covert Ops frig:
1. Scouting Enemy Ships and Positions 2. Travelling Through Blockaded Territories 3. Making BMs in Blockaded Territories 4. Camping Enemy Safe Points 5. Being Used as a 'Warp to' marker in Gangs 6. Fleet Support/Tackling (Sensor Damps, Race Specifics, Webbers/Scramblers, and a prayer) 7. Anti Frig 1v1 (Takes a lot of guts to do this, only time I tried it the target ran!) 8. System Scanning using Scan Probes
18.0 - What are the combat uses of cloaked ships other than the Covert Ops Frig? Another one based on personal opinions:
Frigs/Intys/Cruisers 1. Fleet Support/Tackling (Not as flexible as the Covert Ops but the speed penalty is less noticable) 2. Warp to Marker 3. Anti Frig 1v1 (Tested Successfully) 4. Scouting out Fixed Positions (Stns, Cans, Gates etc) 5. System Scanning using Scan Probes
BS 1. Fixed Scouting (the kind that doesn't need moving around) 2. Ambushing (smaller ships as bait/tackler) 3. System Scanning using Scan Probe

You're not wrong, its hard. When I did it in 0.0 I just stayed uncloaked until someone entered the system, or unless there were gate rats.
Ironically empire is even worse, with constant tracking and the small fleet of Empire BS stationed at most gates, it can be very tricky to stay cloaked for more than a minute without being rammed by someone or another! :D

Lots of detail, thanks. Just a couple of questions: 1) If you're using a Covert Ops cloak, can you warp whilst cloaked? 2) I often use my autopilot to time the jump through BMed stargates. Does this still work if cloaked? If not but you can warp cloaked using the Covert Ops cloak can I deactivate the cloak mid warp? [ |

1) yes - this is the primary advantage of the cov op 2) yes - u can de-activate the cloak mid warp - u warp cloaked u can arrive either cloaked or uncloaked. conversely u can not activate the cloak in mid warp - u warp uncloaked - u arrive uncloaked
guide mentions being unable to use MWDs - but the same restriction applies to ABs.
Overdrives can be used to improve base speed.
you can also MWD to get your speed up and then cloak. this causes the MWD to turn off but you will be cloaked at a higher than allowed speed which will then decrease fairly slowly to the cloaked maximum _______________________

It should read "you can't START a system scan"
300 seconds to do the scan so start it after you drop your last probe and cloak

With a bit of practice, making insta BMs while cloaked is fairly easy, but does take longer because you need to go wide around the gate. I usually uncloak unless someone else is in the system or if I am using the cloak to stay safe near gate camping NPCs.
Proto Cloaks are great for Industry ships. If you can get to a safe spot and turn it on, you truely are safe. Going afk in 0.0 is no problem if you are cloaked at a safe spot.

It means if you are cloaked and uncloak you have to wait 30s before you can reactivate the cloak. However if you have just jumped through the gate I find I can cloak as soon as you're moving. |

I didnt see this mentioned earlier so thought I would warn every new cloak user. Currently there is a bug that allows NPC rats to target you whilst cloaked. Your modual will deactivate and everyone will be able to see you however <and this is the kicked> you appear still cloaked on your monitor! so if your not watching your modual status closely you might miss the fact that a: your now uncloaked b: your targeted <and getting shot at probably> c: you cant recloak whilst being targeted
one kinda cool aspect while testing this was that i was in korama and had lil 2500k rats locking me so i shot them and it looked cool to shoot whilst i was cloaked but, actually i wasnt cloaked just looked like i was on my display -----------------------

Not sure if the following has been mentioned before...
Another small detail about cloaking devices: You can fit multiple cloaking devices onto your ship, but you will not be able to activate any of them... In other words, when you want a working cloak, fit 1 and only 1 cloaking device.

The drones stop working if you cloak, because they lose contact with you.
Another funny thing to note is that you can't cloak if you have two cloaks fitted.

9.0 - Can I be forced to uncloak? Yes. If you get within 2km of ANY object you forcibly uncloak. You will also uncloak if you get hit by a smart bomb.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is not accurate. I've had inty's come within 500m of me and not decloak me. You need to get hit by something or run into something to get forcibly decloaked.
Do I recommend getting close to stuff? No it's suicide. And I can't guarantee that this will always work, only that it's my own experience with warping to gates etc. I've been 800m from gate and not been able to jump because I didn't decloak.

The bug about the ship appearing on screen cloaked, when you really aren't, has been there a long time. You need to watch the module button to know if you are cloaked...

I have no problems warping uncloaked and then cloak midwarp with a covert ops cloak.. That's what I do when on autopilot, I decloak after jump, AP starts warp, I cloak and fly cloaked till I "hit" the next gate. I then decloak but jump almost immediately after that. So the cloaking must have had some improvements in the last patches..

Very good FAQ Hygelac, thanks a lot for it. Anyway, I got some questions pls: 1. If I get targeted by somebody, and I use my ECM's on him and he will not have his target on me, can I get cloaked after that? 2. What will happen' if I use that cloaking module that is made for cov ops ship on a regular ship? 3. Exept bumping in something, there is no way that can make me visible? with probes or something else maybe?

FAQ is getting quite out of date, I'll try to update it at somepoint Soon! In answer to your questions:
1. ECM the guy then cloak is fine. But its only really effective in a 1v1 situation, if you have 6 people locking you, you're in trouble.
2. You can't. If you look at the fitting requirements for a Covert Ops cloak, the CPU requirement is so high that no other ship in the game is capable of fitting it without the bonus.
3. Correct only getting within 2km of an object will decloak you. But be careful. In one of the patches last year, they made planets 'solid' objects. Previously you could fly right through the surface of a planet and stay cloaked. Now if you bump into a planet, you'll loose cloak. I've accidently done this when I was AFK so be careful.
One other thing to note is that objects which might not apear on your scanner will decloak you. Such as Missiles. I found this out the hard way when sneaking up to a sniping Raven, his Cruise missiles decloaked me on the way to their target!

1. Well this is kind of a dumb question but do you need to have a lock in order to use smartbombs or the ECM burst? If you don't well I have a pretty nasty setup in mind.
2. The guide mentions you can't use an Mwd while cloaked but wtb afterburners?
3. Would it be feasible to use the cloak on a close range setup Bs that does have to move? Btw he way nice guide. Never knew I knew so little about cloaking devices.

1. Don't need a lock. But ECM Burst currently doesn't actually do squat. 2. You cannot activate ANY modules while cloaked. 3. It'd be really slow but it's possible to surprise people by cloaking 50km above a belt, going idle until someone appears and starts mining and then sneaking up to them. You'd be within scrambler and weapons range when you decloaked.

Has anyone with cloaking experience used a covert ops with a covert ops cloaking device II to transport contraband? It would be nice to hear if anyone has done this successfully, or unsuccessfully. In particular I'm wondering if that brief blip after jumping and prior to re-cloaking is enough to get you tagged by customs in empire or not. I can certainly understand why most people may not be eager to test this out though.
If this works, this would certainly add to ythe usefulness of a covert ops ship fitted with a covert ops II cloaking device. We all have stuff in one place or another that we can't exactly transport conveniently without getting tagged with a fine or worse.

Caldari has 2 covert ops ships: BUzzard and Manticore, both tech2 frigs. The Manticore is also designed as stealth-bomber, just a thought.
Some sweetners concerning the Manticore Close to 25% reduction in Cruise launcher kit powergrid needs. 5% bonus to Cruise msl kinetic dmg.
and the proverbial cherry..
'Advanced techniques in spatial distortion technology enable them to potentially fly faster when cloaked than when uncloaked..' meaning: 25% (!!!) bonus to cloaked velocity.

'Advanced techniques in spatial distortion technology enable them to potentially fly faster when cloaked than when uncloaked..' meaning: 25% (!!!) bonus to cloaked velocity.
okays... few things you have misread...
1. the manticore (and all stealth bombers) has a 19.96 (i think of the top of my head) reduction in cruise PG needs PER FRIGATE LEVEL!!!!! you NEED frigate lvl 5 to fly the ship, thats about 20 PG per launcher (this is also the kinetic damage as well)
2. its 25% bonus to cloaked velocity per level, so cov ops 4 with the T1 cloak means you go slightly faster cloaked than not cloakd, cov ops 5 means you go 35% faster than your base speed.

Just want it to be known that just because you are in a cover ops ship with the covert ops cloaking device II you aren't safe from gate camps. If the gate campers are podding everyone that comes to thier gate thier will be frozen bodys floating in space and these will cause you to uncloak if you get with in 2.5km or whatever it is from them and you won't see the froven bodies.. at least I didn't so I was pretty dumb founded when I became uncloaked and didn't see anything close to me, excpet the gate campers over 100km out or whatever it is.

hello, if i insta-warp from a gate A to a Gate B where a Bubble is anchored :
1. Am I catch by the bubble ? 2. if Yes, do i de-cloack (if i supposed that nothing else 'solid' is at less than 2.5km)?
Same questions with an interdictor bubble.

1. Yes, you are caught in the bubble whether you are cloaked or not
2. No, being caught in a bubble doesn't mean you decloak, it's not like a forcefield. However if you get within 2km of an object you'll decloak as normal.
As a side note, you'll often find that experienced bubble users will jettison a can at the point where most people will be dragged out of warp. This has the added advantage of decloaking anyone who lands in the bubble as the can will be within 2km.
I'm always very careful of travelling through choke systems even when cloaked, if you get caught in a bubble you wont just lose your ship but most likely lose your implants too.

ok, when noone wants to answer the smuggling Q I can only deduct a bit out of it. a. can't be that noone tried it. It's very tempting. b. obviously, the profit is good enough that the one who knows won't share his experience in a small niche of bussiness like this.
Therefore, quite probably, you can smuggle in Empire.

well, untill you actually try, i dont reccomend that you tell people they can, if someoen is willing to send me 60 mil isk ill give it a go, but i am not rich enough to try. cov-ops cloaks are too expensive to try things like this.

A few things I've heard/read regarding covert ops and smuggling:
a) Whether or not a customs offical scans you or not is chance based. b) The customs scan is near instantanious (possibly get scanned during the brief recloak that has to be done during warpgate cloak and module cloak?)
This unfortunately creates too many variables to easily get a straight answer. If a customs offical doesn't catch you, it could be because he just didn't do a scan (chance based system), of that you sucessfully recloaked quickly enough to avoid a scan (instantanious scanning). If he does catch you, it could be because they have uber targetting and scanning, you hit a lag spike during the recloak, of that they can see through your cloak (also heard this).
Unless someone can say that they've done a considerable number of sucessful contraband runs in a cloaked ship, I dont think theres gonna be an answer to this.
Added to the problem is the bug whereby your ship has the cloaked effect, but the module isnt activated, so you're not actually cloaked...
Bleh... you can see theres issues

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong and....wrong.
Using a Buzzard, <covert ops frig> it is possible to fly directly up to a jumpgate and then decloak for the slightest second before warping through. On the other side, a good covert ops pilot will only be on the scanners for a blink.
Therefore, if smuggling is your intent, then this is indeed the ship to use due to these factors. What is NOT so pretty about this arrangement is that while you can in fact do this and risk VERY little due to concord, what you CANT do is increase your cargo space suffciently to make the trip profitable.
So if you wish to risk 60+ million on the chance you can make possibly 2-4 million on one run that may take an insane number of jumps, feel free. Otherwise, it simply isnt worth it.

I've always been told this is an exploit. It doesn't seem like one to me so I don't want to start an argument, just be aware you can always try the petition lucky dip if you lose your ship to this.

yes.
And remote sensor damps are your friend! Although it was mentioned that you can't cloak when you just venture out of lock range while locked, a sensor damp will FORCE the lock off, and allow for cloak.
Figured that out once when i was targeted by a couple of Moa's.

If someone is running a Sensor Booster or a Passive Targeter, can they target you (or decloak you) when you are cloaked?
I have been wondering this for a while.

With the cost of a Cov Ops Cloak II these days, I just said forget it.
Although the improvements since RMR have been awesome, probably part of the reason why they cost so much now.
I sold mine for 50mil and bought mins to build a Tempest.
All it takes is to get caught at a gate camp with warp bubbles and PPPFFFFT. There goes 50mil with zip for insurance.
Even with a Gist Type A mwd, you're chances of escaping a bubble camp are low.
Now for scouting, i just use my dirt cheap Claw, with T1 mods and cruize around at 5kms, and I can fight back, much more fun.
Really, they know you're there on local, and all you have to do is a 1000km scan to know if the cloaker is near your location, so I don't really see such a great advantage to justify the ridiculous prices of cloak mods.
I have Covert Ops, and cloaking 5, and all I'm going to do with it now is to buy the prototype cloak and hide my hauler or Tempest with it.

The cost isn't because bombers or covert ops ships got super-awesome better; it's that there are now four more ships capable of using them effectively.
Also, I'm pretty sure you don't show on scanners if you are cloaked.
Fraknly, I wish they'd release the tech 1 cloaking device BPO from NPCs though. Ten million isk for that one module? Ridiculous.

Until someone performs exhaustive tests (minimum 1000 jumps) it will be impossible to say whether a cloaked ship will take you past Customs vessels. Customs vessels can scan through containers after all. But there are better options for those of you wanting to move nerve sticks, being set-up for precisely the purpose, simply hire someone who has Black Marketteering.

Edited by: Myvek on 08/10/2006 00:47:01 Cloak speed penalty is only while cloaked. If you have sufficient skills in a stealth bomber, you offset the penalty and can fly faster cloaked than uncloaked. A covert ops ship fitted with cov ops 2 cloak has no velocity penalty.
I want to know why a Cynosaural Field Generator counts as a cloak? If you have a Force Recon ship which has both the cov ops 2 cloak bonus and a Cyno field gen bonus, you cannot have both fitted at the same time or neither will work! It also doesn't matter if either is offline...

A Cloak isn't an "I WIn" button, its designed for snoop and **** missions.
If you want to have no drawbacks then you train for a CovertOps or Recon ship and pay the money for the CovertOps cloak. TO use one effectively in combat you have to have the right skills and equipment. When I first read the descriptions I was kindof surprised that you could mount a cloak on any ship..... <-----------> MMORPG == Massively Moronic Online Raw Powergaming Grief fests....

No i don't think that's true. I have cloaking 4 and i do have a targeting delay even when using a covert-ops cloak. It's pretty short though.
About bubbles and spheres: bubbles do NOT uncloak you. If you're brave you can slip through the camp into jumprange without getting uncloaked. It's not easy though. Interdiction spheres on the other hand do uncloak you. Or let's say they deactivate your cloaking device. Yet they don't pull you in as bubbles do and they only last for 2 minutes. So you can avoid them by just warping to 50km and waiting till they're gone.

Depends... you can't activate the gate while cloaked, but you can recloak (if using covert ops) while in warp to the next spot. Something at the desitnation may uncloak you though. Most often you can not recloak in deadspace areas if there are gas clouds etc present. It is really a case by case type thing.

1. drones (and fighters) lose ownership when you cloak. so you cloak with drones out, say bye bye to drones until you rescoop them.
2. see one.
3. no, tho you can use the server delay to cloak a second before your missiles hit and they should do dmg. I've heard otherwise tho never stuck around to see if my cruises did dmg (i did see them hit)

decalibration delay has been completely removed from stealth bombers some time ago, that's why you can start locking sequence the moment your cloaking device is deactivated --- That is a Templar, an Amarr fighter. It is a combat drone used by carriers. |

From my experiance with drones in missions if i have targetted a rat and told them to attack it then warped out they continued to attack until all the rats targetted them and they popped. If this is true wouldnt sentry drones sit and attack even if they loose ownship of you as long as you've given them a target?

Question from a newbie... I have an Azuras, and just got my Cloaking to level 4. Yet, I still can't reasonably use the Covert Ops cloaking device. My Covert Ops is level 4, but the CPU usage is still 400-ish.
My Recon Ships is only level 1. The Azuras appears to grant a reduction of 96-100% cloaking device use per level. Should I train my Recon Ships up to reduce the CPU use, or bite the bullet and put my Covert Ops at level 5?
Thanks for the help, ~Tidal C.

for any force recon, you need recon ships to level 4, minimum.
the skill cloaking, does nothing for cpu.
other than that, I will add nothing to this thread. |
