1.0 - Scope This FAQ covers the 'Improved Cloaking Device II', 'Prototype Cloak' and 'Covert Ops Cloaking Device II' devices only.
2.0 - What is a cloaking device? A cloaking device is a module which is mounted on your ship in a highslot. When activated it renders you invisible or 'cloaked'.
3.0 - How long does cloaking take? About 1 second.
4.0 - How long does de-cloaking take? Decloaking only takes a second, however once you've decloaked you can't target anything for around 20secs, this is called 'Sensor recalibration time' and is modified by your cloaking skill. Different cloaks have different recalibration times. It is worth noting that you can actually start targetting sooner as long as the actual lock doesn't resolve before the end of this 'recalibration' period. Best approach is to start trying to lock as soon as you decloak.
5.0 - Can you be seen whilst cloaked? Nope, whilst cloaked you are completely invisible. You can't be seen or targetted. There is a possibility that you can be Smartbombed, this will not damage you but will force you to uncloak.
6.0 - What restrictions are there to a cloaked vessel? Whilst cloaked you are under the following restrictions:
1. You can't Target anything 2. You can't warp (Except with the Covert Ops Cloak) 3. You move slower (Exact speed loss depends on the cloaking module used) 4. You can't Launch Drones 5. You can't open cans 6. You can't collect loot 7. You can't Activate Smartbombs 8. You can't use FOFs 9. You can't change Ammo Types 10. You can't use a MWD 11. You can't activate a docking sequence 12. You can't jump through a Stargate 13. You can't activate Armour repairers or Structure Repairers 14. Essentially you can't activate *any* modules whilst cloaked. 15. You can't Releod weapons or charges 16. You can't perform a scan probe analysis
7.0 - Can I Jump through Stargates when Cloaked? As stated above, No. However with some careful timing and a bit of luck you can get through gates *mostly* undetected.
1. A Cloaked Ship Approaches the Stargate. 2. Once you are at 2.5km, press the decloak button 3. Wait half a second then 'Jump' 4. On the otherside, you start cloaked but this isn't a proper 'cloak' 5. Start moving in a random direction 6. Quickly press the 'cloak' button, you will 'blink' on peoples scanners then dissapear again.
This method can be used to evade blockades, be aware that a savvy pirate will have his frigs MWDing to your last known position to try and force you out of 'cloak'.
Warning: Jumping through stargates like this is prone to misjump unless you wait the half second before firing the jump sequence. In Exodus build v2.03.3106 it is possible to 'jump' but have your ship remain in space, even though you can't see it. Your ship can be targetted and destroyed because of this. Also the logs will not show that this has happened and you will not receive reimbursement!
8.0 - When can't I cloak? You can't cloak when within 2Km of another object. You are also unable to cloak when you are targetted by another player or NPC, this can be a real pain if you are trying to get out of trouble!
Be warned that there is a bug with targetting that will effect the cloaking device: If you are targetted, and move out of range, unless the targetting ship attempts to activate a module on you, they retain the target lock. This means you can be 500km away or more and still targetted by another frig. Rendering you unable to cloak!
9.0 - Can I be forced to uncloak? Yes. If you get within 2km of ANY object you forcibly uncloak. You will also uncloak if you get hit by a smart bomb.

I haven't tried, but I think it would be hard to make good insta-jump bms with cloaked ship. Cause you'd have to make sure to stay away from the gate at 2km, it can mess up your trajectory and offset the bookmark to bad position

Edited by: Hygelac on 13/01/2005 21:21:25 Bah word limit ate my FAQ :D
10.0 - How much Cap does it use? The cloaking device requires no cap to activate and stays active until you switch it off or an object gets too close Note that it is sometimes possibile to get closer than 2km to a fixed structure such as a Starbase or Stargate without decloaking. This is an intermitant bug.
11.0 - Does it work against NPCs? Yes, but the usual restrictions apply, and remember that NPCs target insanely fast! They also have a tendency to roam around the belts.
12.0 - What are the fitting requirements/attributes of the 'Improved Cloaking device II'?
Skills : Electronics Lvl5 Cloaking Lvl3 Fitting : HiSlot 60 CPU 5 MW Attributes: -40% Scan resolution! 20 Sec Recalibration Time 0.25% Velocity (i.e. 25% of your max) Volume : 100m3
13.0 - What are the fitting requirements/attributes of the 'Prototype Cloaking device'?
Skills : Electronics Lvl5 Cloaking Lvl1 Fitting : HiSlot 30 CPU 1 MW Attributes: -50% Scan resolution! 30 Sec Recalibration Time 0.1% Velocity (i.e. 10% of your max)
14.0 - What are the fitting requirements/attributes of the 'Covert Ops Cloaking Device II'? Skills : Electronics Lvl5 Cloaking Lvl4 Covert Ops lvl2* Fitting : HiSlot 5000 CPU!** 1 MW Attributes: -0% Scan resolution! (i.e. No Scan Resolution Penalty!) 10 Sec Recalibration Time 100% Velocity (i.e. No speed penalty!)
* Note, I couldnt even mount the Covert Ops Cloak until I had lvl2 Covert Ops because of the insane CPU requirements. ** Note that the 5000CPU is to prevent ships other than Covert Ops frigs from using this module. I found that with the Cheetah, I needed to train Covert Ops lvl4 just to be able to mount a decent setup.
15.0 - When does the Scan Resolution penalty apply? The Scan Resolution penalty is in effect as soon as you mount the module on your ship, this means that you will target *everything* 40%/50% slower than normally. This is a big consideration when flying a cloaked BS.
15.1 - Can I turn the module off to avoid the scanner penalty? No. Putting the module offline will not remove the Scan Resolution penalty.
16.0 - How much does the cloaking skill cost and what rank is it? Last time I looked it cost 1m on the market and there were plenty available. It is rank 6.
17.0 - What are the combat uses of a Covert Ops Frig? This is a very subjective question and is very much personal opinion, best to try it out and form your own ideas. However these are the ways in which I've used the Covert Ops frig:
1. Scouting Enemy Ships and Positions 2. Travelling Through Blockaded Territories 3. Making BMs in Blockaded Territories 4. Camping Enemy Safe Points 5. Being Used as a 'Warp to' marker in Gangs 6. Fleet Support/Tackling (Sensor Damps, Race Specifics, Webbers/Scramblers, and a prayer) 7. Anti Frig 1v1 (Takes a lot of guts to do this, only time I tried it the target ran!) 8. System Scanning using Scan Probes
18.0 - What are the combat uses of cloaked ships other than the Covert Ops Frig? Another one based on personal opinions:
Frigs/Intys/Cruisers 1. Fleet Support/Tackling (Not as flexible as the Covert Ops but the speed penalty is less noticable) 2. Warp to Marker 3. Anti Frig 1v1 (Tested Successfully) 4. Scouting out Fixed Positions (Stns, Cans, Gates etc) 5. System Scanning using Scan Probes
BS 1. Fixed Scouting (the kind that doesn't need moving around) 2. Ambushing (smaller ships as bait/tackler) 3. System Scanning using Scan Probe

You're not wrong, its hard. When I did it in 0.0 I just stayed uncloaked until someone entered the system, or unless there were gate rats.
Ironically empire is even worse, with constant tracking and the small fleet of Empire BS stationed at most gates, it can be very tricky to stay cloaked for more than a minute without being rammed by someone or another! :D

Lots of detail, thanks. Just a couple of questions: 1) If you're using a Covert Ops cloak, can you warp whilst cloaked? 2) I often use my autopilot to time the jump through BMed stargates. Does this still work if cloaked? If not but you can warp cloaked using the Covert Ops cloak can I deactivate the cloak mid warp? [ |

1) yes - this is the primary advantage of the cov op 2) yes - u can de-activate the cloak mid warp - u warp cloaked u can arrive either cloaked or uncloaked. conversely u can not activate the cloak in mid warp - u warp uncloaked - u arrive uncloaked
guide mentions being unable to use MWDs - but the same restriction applies to ABs.
Overdrives can be used to improve base speed.
you can also MWD to get your speed up and then cloak. this causes the MWD to turn off but you will be cloaked at a higher than allowed speed which will then decrease fairly slowly to the cloaked maximum _______________________

It should read "you can't START a system scan"
300 seconds to do the scan so start it after you drop your last probe and cloak

With a bit of practice, making insta BMs while cloaked is fairly easy, but does take longer because you need to go wide around the gate. I usually uncloak unless someone else is in the system or if I am using the cloak to stay safe near gate camping NPCs.
Proto Cloaks are great for Industry ships. If you can get to a safe spot and turn it on, you truely are safe. Going afk in 0.0 is no problem if you are cloaked at a safe spot.

any ship you can fit a cloaking device on.
I too am wondering if i will be able to move contraband while cloaked. Dont want to get my cheetah and coops2 busted overa few nerve sticks.
Also, my covert ops cloak has a reactivation delay of 30s. What is that? When does it come into play? ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

It means if you are cloaked and uncloak you have to wait 30s before you can reactivate the cloak. However if you have just jumped through the gate I find I can cloak as soon as you're moving. |

I didnt see this mentioned earlier so thought I would warn every new cloak user. Currently there is a bug that allows NPC rats to target you whilst cloaked. Your modual will deactivate and everyone will be able to see you however <and this is the kicked> you appear still cloaked on your monitor! so if your not watching your modual status closely you might miss the fact that a: your now uncloaked b: your targeted <and getting shot at probably> c: you cant recloak whilst being targeted
one kinda cool aspect while testing this was that i was in korama and had lil 2500k rats locking me so i shot them and it looked cool to shoot whilst i was cloaked but, actually i wasnt cloaked just looked like i was on my display -----------------------
And veggie in the back said "everyone" attack and it turned into a ballroom blitz! And Eris in the corner said "boy I wanna know ya" and it turned into a ballroom blitz |

Not sure if the following has been mentioned before...
Another small detail about cloaking devices: You can fit multiple cloaking devices onto your ship, but you will not be able to activate any of them... In other words, when you want a working cloak, fit 1 and only 1 cloaking device.

I've found that if you keep your autopilot on and decloak at 3clicks from the gate.. you jump almost as soon as you decloak!.. youre timing may vary depending on your skills.. |

The drones stop working if you cloak, because they lose contact with you.
Another funny thing to note is that you can't cloak if you have two cloaks fitted.

9.0 - Can I be forced to uncloak? Yes. If you get within 2km of ANY object you forcibly uncloak. You will also uncloak if you get hit by a smart bomb.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is not accurate. I've had inty's come within 500m of me and not decloak me. You need to get hit by something or run into something to get forcibly decloaked.
Do I recommend getting close to stuff? No it's suicide. And I can't guarantee that this will always work, only that it's my own experience with warping to gates etc. I've been 800m from gate and not been able to jump because I didn't decloak.

The bug about the ship appearing on screen cloaked, when you really aren't, has been there a long time. You need to watch the module button to know if you are cloaked...
