Not 100% how I feel about this, solely for the reason that the last big announcement of working on the fiction was forgotten and unceremoniously dropped. Or, at least, it appears so, since we never heard any more about it. That also happened with the fleshing out of the NPC corp descriptions that ISD Mercury started, though I have hopes that the initiative announced in this blog will finish that.
By the by, any way players can participate in this?

I'm a bit sad about the slower pace of chronicles, but I fully support the work you are planning on doing. I've always felt it was a shame the lore of EVE was mainly experienced through reading out of game articles, that often talk about people you can never meet or interact in the game. Any plans to improve the situation gets my thumbs up.

Edited by: Firartix on 08/12/2010 16:16:36 I was too lazy to read this entierly and think about it for real, so this won't be a serious comment, sorry. This is a bit of offtopic but i never found video games were good support for such fiction stuff... and especially not EVE :s
But i would like to point out that the exponential tab effect occurs rather on TvTropes than on Wikipedia... And on SCP Foundation's wiki once you get to understand what's written there :P You can now get back to normal on-topic discussion.

I had been wondering about the increasing absence of RP news coming out lately. Its a shame that mercury won't be producing any more for some time by the sounds of it.
It does sound like this will be a long-term asset to eve, but at the price of less new fiction and I can only assume fewer opportunities for the storyline to respond to what the players are doing. I have very mixed feelings about that.

This is good stuff! Videogames have needed this sort of thing for years, and while several have tried it it is extremely daunting as the amount of content is soooo huge. I can see how this might be problematic to EVE since there are so many locations to actually go to that are simply passed over by the majority of capsuleers (i.e. planets, moons, belts, stars) in their lazy autopilot between Jita and the outskirts.
Quick question: will this also include that effort to reconn a bunch of stuff that was similarly mothballed due to its size?

I like this. I've always wished the back-story and lore were more integrated into, and accessible from within, the game itself.
The unanswered questions you brought up are exactly the sorts of things I've been wondering and would love to read about.
This sort of thing is what makes the fictional universe we inhabit feel more "alive" and "real".

Edited by: Nix Lazarus on 08/12/2010 17:14:29 I remember when I first started Eve over a year ago, I lost a good chunk of my first days frantically reading through the chronicle backlog. It'll be sad to see them go, even for a while.
Though I'm also glad at the decision to expand the backstory with more factual material, even if that brings the risk of me adding New Eden, along with the Star Wars universe and Middle Earth in the list of places I know more about than the real world.
While we're on the subject, might I recommend looking at wookiepedia as an inspiration. It's a truly superb wiki-based info source for such a complex fictional universe.
And I'd advise outsourcing at least some of the work to the guys at White wolf. As a one-time WoD player I remember they're quite good at writing engaging infodumps, and nobody wants to see Abraxas driven crazy(er) by the workload.

I'm going to rain on the parade here.
I don't think this is a good thing. I think this is CCP redirecting time and money from something that can be objectively measured (1 Chron every two weeks) to something that can't (we're adding fiction in different places). CCP hasn't exactly been known for a burning desire to maintain continuity or consistency across their universe (witness the in-game information on corporations or factions and the persons in them, as well as TEA, Ruthless, Theodicy...etc), and I think this is just an extension of that attitude into the Chronicles: "well, not many people read them, so why bother?".
And CCP's record hasn't been exactly brilliant when it comes to implementation of content that requires extended, consistent effort. Witness COSMOS, the FW storyline, other storylines, etc. Thus, I don't think that we're going to see a bunch of new content showing up in game because expecting that would be expecting CCP to break out of their normal pattern of behavior, which, I think I must note for the optimists here, is considered their normal pattern of behavior based on all the previous times we thought they were going to do something awesome with the storyline or prime fiction.
I liked the Chronicles because I knew that, every two weeks, I'd get something new and interesting that I could mine for Eve info. Now, I expect that we'll get a few evelopedia articles, and then CCP will find other uses for their time.
And that's if they are sincere about this. Part of me just suspects that they're tired of paying people to write things and want to save the money, so their planning on simply updating a few item descriptions and calling it good. - - -

Thank you, thank you, thaaaaaaaank you for all those wonderful Chronicles. They were always great and certainly each time a new one was published I was quickly diving into reading it.
BIG THANKS!!!
Very sad to hear that those chronicles will stop for a while now.
For the integration into EVE? In theory it sounds reasonable, especially if you want to have a full blown scifi world with all the background. In reality? Not really sure about it - look at the COSMOS stuff for example and how many people are digging into that. Not many.
One piece of advice though: the framework should be in a computer readable format, XML or whatever, from there you should extract the data necessary to write short notes/stories. If you don't have a computer readable format this project will fail in the long run. |

I'll miss them, please don't lose steam and forget this project!
edit: One last thing, please try to pin down how many crew a ship needs, and put that in the game under show info. I don' care if it doesn't get used for anything, the reports are battleships with pod pilots needing 40 to 400 people.

I get a feeling this blog has some kind of connection on my Lorebook. My original idea was after all to bring the in-game lore out into the open so it could be connected with other lore sources.
If nothing else, it will provide me with more connections to look for.
And no, I have currently no plans to integrate my Lorebook with Evelopedia though I played with the thought initially.

As long as the SEO Pyramid is followed, the content should easily and quickly be made available on any format.
From my understanding of the article, the chronicles and a multitude of other in-game information may be made accessible and cross-referenced from just about any device anywhere including:
Smartphones (I can't wait!) All Browsers In-game Ipads
Wiki-style information for the backstory/history/details of Eve is a huge undertaking! Good luck and hurry!

Quote: If you read a chronicle about some person working in a hisec space station, you should be able to meet him at some point in Incarna. If he comes from a planet nearby, it should be a habitable one whose fictional infrastructure and institutions really could have created someone like him, and which are accessible for you to read about when you're in the vicinity. If an agent then hands you a mission that references that planet, it should also reference that same infrastructure, and possibly even the person you read about in a chronicle. And if you want to find out more about any of these, you should be able to do so right away, in depth, and without any necessary foreknowledge. The lore should be deep enough to be interesting to everyone, but also accessible enough - both in how it's organized and how we present it - that anyone, new and old, can find his or her way around it without first having to memorize years' worth of details.
I'm actually partially against this; the thing that I always loved about some of the chronicles is how they were just stories of one of the trillions of people in EVE, maybe of not a special significance beyond being a Minmatar slave, or a member of the Caldari military. They expanded and elaborated content, and yet told stories about the people who's existence that by all rights, we, demigods called capsuleers, shouldn't even comprehend outside of the chronicle. I'm all for uniting the information on things that should matter to capsuleers; a story of some fan of a Gallente pop icon is great for expanding the lore on the icon, but we really shouldn't get much more information about that fan than that snapshot.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words, particularly on the chronicles past. It's always wonderful to know you made something that someone else really liked.
I'm leading this new project (though with tons of cooperation and work from guys like CCP Ginger), and while it may take time to get fully implemented, it'll get there in the end. If not, you can seek me out at Fanfest and yell at me. Buy me a beer first, though.

Hey, awesome - I do the same with mine! Except not with my own stories. Because that would be just a little creepy.
Originally by: MotherMoon dude, make an app. would be epic. Or can one of us make one? is that ok?
Let's see once the compendium's ready. I'm hoping for some time in the first half of 2011, but it depends on how much time I have left over from the Immersion project and others.

Such information would be awesome for the actual roleplayers among us, and may prompt more fan fiction as it becomes easier to integrate our stories with the existing EVE world.
