The presence of the Merlin in the Caldari frigate line-up always bugged me: all the others were named after birds, and there, we had an Arthurian wizard... Yesterday, I found the answer. I was reading a book on the Battle of England (WW2, German aerial warfare against England after the French defeat), when I stumbled upon the line-up for Rolls-Royce engines used in English aircrafts. They were named: Kestrel, Buzzard and Merlin... Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
So, I think we have the origin for the names of some Caldari ships. If you look further, there are other possible references: F-117 Nighthawk, F-111 Raven... I'm pretty sure there are others, but I have not yet had the time to search for more.

It's because of falcon.
P.S. I am terribly sorry for this awful pun, but I just couldn't resist.
P.P.S. The Merlin engine is pretty well-known, but I never heard of the Kestrel or Buzzard models. A quick check on Wikipedia shows that there was a whole range of bird-named interwar engines manufactured by Rolls-Royce, including the Vulture, Eagle, Condor and Hawk versions. Oh yeah, and the Falcon too. So thanks for the info!
P.P.S. Does it mean Caldari are actually British? :tinfoil:

not to say that you are wrong, but when i first started playing eve and saw the name 'Merlin', i thought oh the BIRD like all the other caldari ships are named... why the heck would one think first of a wizard in a scifi genre?
The Merlin (Falco columbarius) is a small type of falcon from the Northern Hemisphere. A bird of prey sometimes known colloquially as a pigeon hawk in North America,[1] the Merlin breeds in the northern Holarctic; some migrate to subtropical and northern tropical regions in winter
and yes, many real life aircraft etc. are named the same as the caldari ships, because they are also named after birds.

Tengu - A supernatural type creature in Japanese folklore, traditionally they kinda resemble birds of prey.

According to some Arthurian lore there wasn't a wizard/druid/wise man called Merlin.
The wizard/druid/wise man had the title "The Merlin" and was named after the bird because of the speed he travelled the country delivering his messages and advice.

Merlin is the name of a big fish iirc. Caldari ships don't always have the bird naming convention, sometimes they are named after animals, such as Caracal being a cat, Scorpion, Chimera etc. ---

You're thinking of the Marlin. Merlin is the bird of prey

I think your possibly wrong but good effort. They are really common names for aircraft and other vehicals/engines but the RR link is good. You forgot the Griffon which is an EVE frigate and RR's evolution of the Merlin engine.
There was a Hawker Typhoon and Hawker Tempest but the 3rd evolution was the Fury (not the first Hawker plane to be called a Fury either) and later called the Seafury (bit like a Grumman Bearcat)but used Bristol engines, which all names after Greek Gods. There was no Hawker Maelstrom though but there was a Hawker Hedgehog.
There was a Hawker Hurricane though but no Cyclone, although there was a US radial engine called a Cyclone.
Napier, later English Electric made an engine called the Sabre (which was used in the Tempest and Typhoon) but thats where that ends since there other engines were called things like Culverin (a cannon) or Lion (furry beast).
But there is no EVE ship called a Jumo 211 or DB601 or BWM801D. See where i'm going :)As soon as there is, you have my buy in.

The Japanese word for Tengu is the words Sky/Heavenly and Dog. Or at least that what it looks like from the perspective of a Chinese. It was often depicted as winged, if not actually a Bird.

Caldari are British...
Caldari society is the complete opposite of British society, which like more or less the rest of Europe (And to an extent America & Canada) has a definitely Gallente flavour.
Caldari are the epitome of Japanese values in a patriotic Japanese/American corporate culture.
Also look at all these American military aircraft... sound familiar?

Well since we are going with the aircraft theme a merlin is an aircraft. Merlin
Also with rolls royce engine going on that theme too Merlin engines
It uses a radar system called blue Kestrel so two caldari references in one aircraft.
Also it's a British/Italian aircraft. so reinforcing the Caldari=British idea.
