Edited by: Mijano on 21/01/2011 20:53:31 Edited by: Mijano on 21/01/2011 20:53:06 I was going to answer to a subject, not create a new one, yet I managed to mess up and here we are so I'll take this opportunity to whine a bit.
Don't you guys think it's kind of ridiculous the way we look? So clean and so ... model-like, instead of the hardcore, murderous, violent, mutant motherf- we are.
It doesn't feel right. Perhaps this will change later on with scars and piercings, but there's only as much accessories can do. ___

Yes. You are a funny guy. Pathetic, but funny. Okay: Probably more pathetic and violently stupid, but that's kind of funny.
Originally by: Syn Callibri This almost sounds like a..."Should I wear a suit or sweats to my trial?"...question.
No. It doesn't. We look way too clean. Perhaps you dig it - I have no problem with that! I'm just looking for opinions because it just feels weird looking so clean, although of course this is better than an astronaut suit, but two wrongs doesn't make a right. ___

Its people choosing to look like that. you can make yourself have some character if you really want.
besides covered in pod goo isn't all that glamorous really.
Aside from that, even the lowest pod pirate is still a pod pilot and per the lore they are part of the elite of the universe.

Hey it's just a layer of make-up you're looking at .. any idea how much time it takes to work away those scars with the best primer? No?

I don't really have a response to this. All you need to know is that I'm not a racist, and that I don't want to look like a rap artist when I drive my Hurricane. Right now I don't. If I change my character I will.

Well, we look like kind, smiling models, not like pilots engaging in empire war.

There's another way of looking at that, clones are fairly bland so they pay for scaring to be added just to give them character. Or they wish to keep a previous scare by making arrangements for it to be added to the replacement clone.
If we assume that we stay in the pod until death then we would get no scaring. But as the intention is to walk around stations then we can assume that is not the case.

So do pilots when properly dolled up for a professional photo session.

Okay. I'll buy that we would look better taking our pilot-photo, or whatever.
This theory does only work if we look more worn out when we engage in 3D-environments later on.
Of course the clone-theory works as well ... Yet I can't say I'm a big fan of this, but it's not like I can do much about it. I just hope that later on with additions it will become more realistic or whatever. ___

play with the values for age, scarring, ... and you can arrive at a more realistic look.
Also consider lightning - many people seem to use very bright lightning on their portraits (which can make small imperfections even less visible ... or highlight more accentuated ones).
Have a look at the picture for this character (link to big version) - the wrinkles seem to be too strong and he could have a little more freckles but apart from that I am quite happy with him.
I think many people think "OMG I don't want to look like I am 80 with freckles and scars all over my face" and ignore the aging options completely while still trying to go for a somewhat mature look - most 20-something year olds I know IRL have more skin imperfections than the average 10-30 years older EVE avatar.

Part of the reason that everyone looks clean and polished is that I highly suspect that OUR AVATARS OUR NOT YET FINALIZED.
"As we expect very high number of characters to be created in the initial days after launch, we might decide to use lower quality textures for the portraits while getting over the initial tsunami of characters, but then redo them in higher quality in the days thereafter."
I think that what we see currently in-game and in forums is NOT what the system is capable of rendering, so even people's do-over avatars will be changed AGAIN once CCP gets around to rendering them.
If anyone can confirm or deny this, it would be greatly appreciated! I've petitioned with CCP for an answer, but only get canned responses...

I've been wondering, myself, why so many avatars end up looking plastic or airbrushed. I guess it's people going for a high level of light intensity and not using any of the complexion textures to compensate. I've done three characters in the new creator, and they've all come out looking almost photorealistic, I think.
To take issue with one thing you've said, though, my character isn't a soldier. She's more of an explorer, really, though in any case, I don't think there's any requirement to be a murderous mutant just because you fly a spaceship.

When you recreate your avatar, play with the three sliders under Complexion. The "scarring" slider on a low setting adds subtle things like remnant acne pock marks and shaving bumps to male faces. At higher settings the scars become more prominent. At the highest setting you get Adama-face!
