The reason Eve isnt as popular as WoW is because:
1)Eve has a huge learning curve. It is a vastly more complicated game. 2)Eve is not an insta gratification game. It requires patience and work/ credit card. 3) CCP didnt use mass advertising to put out a crappy game like Blizzard. CCP focused more on the game and not how many stores they could get their pretty box into so the kiddies could say " mommie i want that!"
Eve is a far superior MMO than WoW and will outlive it as long as CCP doesnt get greedy, lazy, or stops listening to the player base.
If eve were to become more like wow i think i would have to find a new MMO.
EVE advertises about as heavily as the size of the parent company allows, they're about on par with Blizzard once you take the size difference into account.
The primary advantages WoW has in an audience sense are thus:
(1) Setting - fantasy setting has always been more popular for escapist roleplaying than scifi, for the simple reason that there's an implication that scifi follows, to some extent, the same laws as the real world, so you're not really escaping as such. Additionally, the Warcraft IP is a popular video game series ripped off of another popular existing fantasy setting, so they have a hook into a large existing audience.
(2) Accessibility - given a certain fraction of the time between expansions, you've got the ability to at least see all of the available new content in a given WoW expansion without having to work your ass off to get there. They've had some recent difficulty with this bit, with Wrath of the Lich King being inadvertently made so easy that the 'game' part of the setting was trivial and they lost subscribers, but Cataclysm has found a much better balance.
(3) Player interaction - any given character in WoW is a reasonably viable partner for any other character with some minor spec alteration and gear swapping. Compare this to Eve's extreme specialization, where you cannot realistically take, say, your industrial-trained character along with your buddies doing WH PvP and make a meaningful contribution. People want to be able to play with all their friends, not just the ones with specialized compatible characters.
(4) They were told there would be no math - similar to the point above, the interaction of gear with player abilities is exceedingly simple, meaning that people can simply throw on what they've got and go out to shoot people in the face without extensive advanced preparation. For people blowing off steam instead of starting a second imaginary career, this is preferable to calculating optimum tracking/range combos when fitting. There are a lot more people that game to blow off steam than to create a perfect stat sheet.
(5) Speed - WoW's combat goes faster and is more responsive. Forming a social group you can rely on to some extent takes hours, tops, rather than months. You don't have to build a new character/ability set every time you die, and standard sets can in fact be swapped in moments. Basically, if you've got other **** to do with your life WoW is probably the best choice.
I'm not saying Eve is a bad game, I'm just saying that it caters to a very narrow subset of gamer culture. WoW is the paintball of MMOs, Eve is its painting model trains. WoW is closer to being a sport, Eve is more of a hobby. ---

I like Eve, but it could be nicer. I like Wow and it is nice. Though Wow could have some features that it is missing. But Eve could still be nicer.

They should add the WoW planet in EVE.
Ever pilot in EVE then should be allowed to orbital strike every WoW character in real time. |

You *could* have a "tactical simulator" where people could take their ships to practice PvE or PvP fighting. Just make sure there are no rewards for it...just a practice area for validating builds/tactics.

Should have moved it to the trash.

Exactly! Real loss value man. No game will be close to Eve until they incorporate a system of real loss value.

WoW is a 3D chatroom.
It's a social-centric MMO.
Quest with a level 80 and triple level up to 60. It's extremely new player friendly and, outside of twitch reaction, prediction-based PvP (which is horribly repetitive time after time) WoW doesn't have much to offer for long term challenge.
The bulk of people I know who keep playing it do so specifically because that's the game all of their online social contacts are playing. When they're playing another game, they start missing that social draw of WoW and almost always go back.
Eve caters to a niche audience int he MMO world. A higher learning curve, no quick leveling to max, non-turnkey PvP, PvP/PvE combination in faction warfare, and a much more complex and robust economy combined make Eve an MMO that, intentionally, isn't going to cater to the masses like WoW does.
WoW has the low skill, social MMO category filled and it's very focused on that. It fills that niche so well, that no other MMO stands a chance at knocking WoW off of that throne.
Eve fills it's niche just as well. While not having as many subscribers, it's still the primary "other MMO" out there....even after all of of these years.
No, Eve should not try to be like WoW.

Edited by: True Deciever on 25/01/2011 23:15:25 Funny thing alot of bittervets posting here (who supposedly left "that horrible game" years ago) are surprisingly well informed about WoW's recent game specifics.
WoW and EvE are vastly different by design. But I would like to state that in both cases low end playing is horrible. In EVE low enders are in hsec hamsterwheel, in WoW they are in chatroom.
Endgame however is where the differences kick in, you can buy your way in WoW top guild only by sweat blood and being fking good at game. Not just knowing how to play right but also being able to.
While in EVE relevant powers consist of average Joes who's quality differs from one alliance to another (slightly!) and really is vague. Only small weekend warrior corps such as SoT can maintain high member standarts.
In decent WoW guilds 1/25 player is a weak link and doom to whole raid and usually disposed on first sign. |

Edited by: Zephris on 25/01/2011 23:26:13 eve is played by people who think they are smarter then everyone else. wow is played by people who just want to have fun.
If you want to enjoy a casual game, wow is certainly the better choice. Certain professions in EVE can hardly be considered gaming (I am looking at you, starbase defense management.)
If you are looking for a way to relax after a hard day of work, Wow is better for it. if you have nothing better to do then to kill all of your time by playing a game, EVE is better.

DO I get to spend my PLEX on a little baby Rifter that follow me around? Plus, I think my Jaguar needs bigger shoulder pads...that'd be awesome!
