This thread isn't about the prettiest or most handsome or the gayest or the ugliest. It's not even about the most realistic, though it can be. They can be iconic and eye-catching like these: Or gritty and full of character: I only ask that you not post yourself since self portraits or a matter of taste.

K Rho	Posted - 2011.01.29 12:30:00 - [10] Thanks for the mention! It really helped me that I did a lot of character creation testing on Sisi. A tip: one really should keep in mind that a body shot might look good on the screen, however other people will only see your small forum portrait or even the really small chat portraits, so to get a recognizable image you really want to zoom in - body shots and even some shoulder shots tend to get lost in the background in the small images. If you can't make out your small preview pics, other players won't be able to make out your character, either.

Next to the fact that he looks like Dr Gregory House (!!!), the composition is really great; the bit gloomy shadows and his expression really fit remarkably well. Also the evil right eye suits the general idea pretty well.

The washed out lighting and dark background don't just give the shot a lovely computer monitor glow they also help to sell a more realistic and less plastic face. The very straightforward look on her face makes me think of a slightly tousled and groggy pilot that's just rolled out of bed to hastily snap a shot for her Pilot's Licence. Some avatars may be sharper and some avatars may look prettier but I've yet to see any as full of character or as well thought through as this one. A+

For me, it was more important to create a portrait that is eye-catching, recognisable, and realistic, than one which is dull and generic like everyone else, or one of those tacky "boobies shot"; even if the 1-3-2 pose "gets on your nerves after a while", too "myspace", or too "facebook" to those who like mugshot poses. Seeing mannequin portraits are ok the first couple times, but nobody is going to go back to take another look, never mind remembering them.

Unfortunately many others, like for example Carniflex himself were not as successful compositions regardless of several tries. Even if Doris seems a bit more fitting into World of Darkness than into EVE Online. Overall I'm a bit disappointed with the posing phase, especially the very limited lighting options. I would have really preferred at least few lightsources I can move around myself and pick the color of that lightsource. In sculpting phase it was disappointing to see lack of control over the upper part of head, especially the lack of characteristic long scull of one of the minmatar bloodlines. Given the limitations some of the stuff is pretty impressive.

On second thoughts, the bit that draws my attention is the light on the arms rather than the actual portrait. There's no need for super-high contrast between subject and background in every portrait. A more subtle effect with some mood to it is fine (just doesn't stand out so much in the smaller images). The colours of the clothing and background happened more because my char is in FW and (while I'm no RP'er), I thought some pseudo-military-uniform colouring/clothing (which you obviously can't see all of), "fitted" the char. Face shape and hair is wrong for aviators? Seriously? Your opinion I suppose, looks pretty boss to me (of course it was super easy to get the eyes/expression looking right and there were so many styles of glasses to choose from). And yeah, light on the arms as I said above: if I could tweak lights individually it'd be different but this one gave the best effect overall. Alot of the portraits I vote on have unusual natural beauty and quite a few get a negative rating that I just don't get but thats the different strokes for different folks thing I guess. But cannot stand the rendering on the shirts. Its looks so crap and detracts from the portrait. Thats why I did such a close up on my face because the rendering of clothing was very low.

I see many people make the mistake of having a different lightsource on the character than with the background, our eyes immediately recognize that there is something amiss when this is done. There are so many impressive portraits in this thread and in-game, but one thing to remember with art as such is that it is very subjective. What you like someone else may dislike so critique them (not criticize). Yours freaks out. Amen sister. Well, my 1st thought when I saw the original picture (Ania) was: "WTF? She looks like retired ****star." But I must agree that the 2nd pic looks quite good, although the pose is kinda strange (perhaps it's the angle of head or something). I'm quite happy with my passport photo, with one small exception. The lightning options in char creator sucks hard! I kinda understand why CCP fixed the light source position to axis of character. I used to do 3D modeling and I hate when I can't fiddle with lights, because with all the available option Caldari have (not sure if other races have different optoins) I wasn't able to create the proper shades I had on my mind (I would move the light source more above the character and bit behind her).

Wanted yellow hair for old avatar, but that wasn't possible (I think :O ) until now. Pretty content with it. From younger lookish old avatar to older looking avatar couple of years later. :O CCP needs more beards/facial hair options. I plan on playing with character creation some more and try out the new stuff CCP added (tatoos, accessories) and stray from being original from my old avatar. ----------------------------------- Peace through power!
