Good Afternoon Fellow Pod Pilots,
How many of you out there have been blessed by a name starting with an A? Do you ever jump into a new system and say to yourself "Damn, now everyone knows who the new local is".
Well every day I jump into a new system and low and behold my name always appears at the top of local list.
This handicap has plagued pod pilots that begin with the first few letters of the alphabet for many years and we have grown tired of it. We suggest that local should not be an alphabetical list of names, but it should be completely randomized.
Are there some negative aspects to this? Yes, it will be hard to find names of friends in local when there are many names to sift through. However, pod pilots with letters at the start of the alphabet will not be discriminated against when jumping into systems.
To further on this, the over view should not allow listing people in space alphabetically either. However, one thing at a time ū this will be a future argument.
LetĘs make EVE fair and fun for everyone. We shouldnĘt have to come up with names that begin with Z to get around this.
Regards, Your Pod Pilot Brother Alexreborn

Yes, and that is exactly the problem.
There are already plans for Local to be removed, or at least reduced in 'perfection' We're just waiting for CCP to invent a better intel tool.

can you imagine how borked eve would be if CCP tried removing something like local? Even if it didn't break gameplay the client would certainly be unusable.

I know right, if they removed local, you probably could not activate your guns, or maybe could not even log on.

If local were changed such that only people who spoke showed up, then it could merely list them in the order they spoke in. -

Say what? Uhmm, sorry to be the first one to say this to you, but your name starts with "B" Trying to hide a half of your face won't help
As for the suggestion, I say let it stay sorted by name - but in a descending order. Let the "Z" guys feel for a bit how it's like

My Brothers,
No need to cut each others throats.
Clearly the current system in place is beneficial to some, otherwise such out cry would not exist.
There is clearly going to be mixed emotions over what I am suggesting because those who stand to lose the in game benefit will clearly voice their objections - as they already have. Thanks by the way for being so vocal, as you have done exactly what I wanted you to do - prove my point for me.
Clearly, something needs to be done.
Just remember, at the end of the day I am not asking for the game to be redone. All I am pointing out is that local is unbalanced and favours people with names that begin with letters further in the alphabet then others. You must surely realize this regardless of your trivial arguments on these forums.

no. maybe its because the current local IS a perfect intel device and no one truly wants to give it up.

Edited by: alexreborn on 07/02/2011 03:06:47 Hi Xylengra,
I would like to point out an error in your assumption. The reason is this: If everyone named themselves with X at the start, eventually we would run into the same problem. It would still be alphabetical.
here let me explain.
If I named my self Xalengra, and you named your self Xylengra, I would be above you all of the time. Which means in a long enough list, it would still create an intel bias.
I also find that the uniqueness of character names would slowly deminish and eventually dissapear as more and more pod pilots discover that an easy way to get around this local unbalance is to name themselves with letters further in the alphabet.

Hi Brock, it appears many pilots in this game dont seem to understand what this thread is about and yet keep posting to try and derail the thread.
Let me explain in full the intel bias.
here is a hypothetical situation:
You jump into a 0.0 system where everyone is blue to each other except for you. There are 50 people in local. The only people visible on your screen are the first 10-15 people in local. To see the other 30+ you must scroll local.
This means if a person with an A jumps in, his name is at the top of the Local channel. What this means is that the people who are lazily ratting or misisoning or whatever they are doing get instant intel that you have enterd channel.
This means that they dont really have to watch local too much and scroll up and down and check names as carefully.
But as I said this bias only affects people with the first few letters of the alphabet. Making the game unfair for those with these letters because we cant properly surprise people the same was as say someone with a Z at the begining of their name who would be at the bottom of local. This means that a ratter/missioner, or gang will have to pay more attention to local then if its the other way around.

so as you can see it beneficial in these situations to have a name that starts with Z because its must harder to be spotted in local.
To the OP. Here is a hypothetical situation. What if you were smart enough to have your name begin with a 'L'? But you aren't which is why it has to be hypothetical. Just because you wanted your name to start with an A doesn't mean the game has a problem. Local is fine. You are not.
