Edited by: Jhietah Ahlt on 11/03/2011 19:33:11 Seems like Crescent City is getting quite popular on national news.
Anyways, got evacuated at 4am, people were orderly and traffic was calm and smooth flowing. A tip of the hat to the volunteer emergency workers. They've done a great job of keeping everything civil.
here is a picture of our harbor after the first 3' surge, it has taken an 8'surge since then, and will be getting some more. Radio says the harbor is pretty much gone now, Seems all houses are unscathed so far.
We dodged a bullet this time, peak high tide at 2am defiantly didn't hurt our situation. Sounds like i'll be stuck here for quite a few hours still.
(first time for me watching twitter feeds, rather disappointing how inaccurate social reporting is.. Of course, ABC told us the evacuation was lifted two hours ago.. so much for national news)
Edit: another pic, no idea what time this was taken at |

Indeed a travesty. As lame as this may sound an earthquake of similar magnitude at the heart of Tokyo would have been far far worse. It could have been a lot worse.

Gotta love the news in the US... "Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake, 8 PLEASURE CRAFT DEVASTATED IN SANTA CRUSE!"

indeed I have to say that if the epicentre was located on the mainland closer to Tokyo, the damage and life loss would be far, far worse. Even if the structures in Japan are built to whitstand earthquakes, a 8.9 mag is pretty much the upper limit anything bigger than a 3-story building that is not a bunker can whitstand, even if it's earthquake resistant. ---

So true.
My thoughts go out to all those that are affected by this event.

BBC news mentioned they have a problem with a Nuclear reactors cooling system and that four others have been shut down, there is a huge fire burning at an oil refinery to.
Backup diesel power is shut down for the cooling system, and main power is cut off also. However, as it stands now, the reactor itself is just fine, the news is just fear mongering with "WORST CASE SCENARIO, REACTOR BLOWS UP!" thing, when in all actuality, the reactor isn't going to blow up.
Basically, it'll be fine as long as they get the coolant going again. Otherwise, you're just looking at a good deal in property damage, and very little ecological damage.

Thankfully this will never happen as it was a thrust falt that gave way today.

I am not trying to make light of the destruction, but while in awe of the destruction I saw in the videos, I was also strangely taken back that all the cars in Japan are of nearly the same color. White, blue or silver. I did see a green truck, but that was it. There might have been some black vehicles, but I think they were artifacts in the video image processing.

Explosions at nuclear power plants are very bad. Try to find data in my other post im looking for - the GOES satellite data and it may show if cores are exposed after that blast. Its the way we found out years ago that Chernobyl had gone up.
This is scary stuff Hope its not as bad as it looks right now.
There is a fairly intelligent Twitter feed going on @arclight.

Edited by: Fulbert on 12/03/2011 10:36:42 It may be only the vapor circuit that gone boom. But what really, really scare me is that the auxiliary generators has been flooded. The reactor isn't cooled anymore (especially if the cooling circuit exploded...) and this is a very, very critic problem. If not Chernobyl, this is at least as worse as Three Miles Island. ____________________________________ Fulbert Industrialist - Casual Trader EVE Online, the best browser MMO of them all |

and call me a pessimist but when Quote: One expert said the explosion was "clearly a serious situation," but may not be related to problems inside the plant's nuclear reactor.
- then that means for me that it's already FUBAR. (sounds exactly the same what the government said about the Chernobyl) ________________________________ ACXtreme @ deviantart |

No, that means the explosion may be related to the primary cooling circuit, which is bad, but not as bad as the explosion of the reactor itself. But that also means... that the situation could go worse at any moment. ____________________________________ Fulbert Industrialist - Casual Trader EVE Online, the best browser MMO of them all |

This is not the same type of reactor as Chernobyl. It is nigh impossible for a light water reactor like this one to explode like reactor 4 of Chernobyl.

the press conference of the chief cabinet secretary was performed. he said the storage container of the core seems not to be broken. in other words, core is safe and the situation is going to escape from worst case scenario. |

I knew that Americans aren't exactly the brightest people on earth but this is hilarious. Since karma seems to be in vogue I wonder what those guys say when those 2 H-bombs, Vietnam war napalm deaths and what else there is to pay as karma for Americans, come to pay a visit.
They say that only human stupidity is infinite and after those comments in the link I'm ready to believe that.
