Good lord I hope not! That would be...just...terrible (unless of course all of the shareholders were required to be Eve players as well...that might work out okay).

CCP is one of the most unique game design shops in the industry, I'd hate to have that ruined by having to cater to people that only want to see profits. I don't know of another game company that does chessboxing let alone says "****" repeatedly in interviews :P

just because they haven't sold shares on any platform you have access to yet doesn't mean they don't have different shareholders (which are of course not all players or employees).

Going public wouldn't make any sense. It offers a quick payoff for executives and everyone else gets screwed. CCP is currently focused on paying their expenses, paying their employees, and producing great games that take what it takes to make them.
Once you go public, you encounter problems like being forced by investors to roll out your games and game content as soon as possible to increase revenue. Being profitable isn't enough. If you made $100m extra last year, you better make $150m extra *this year* or you're no longer the investment darling.
Speculation drives good companies into the ground by putting the focus on the wrong things.

This, there are very few "good" companies that dont rely heavily on the psychology of the stupid masses and create very crappy games for stupid masses. Greed is what destroyed most games, but also the stupid humans which are 90% of humanity which causes crap stuff to sell, especially on consoles... Hopefully the stupid masses will move away from pc to portable devices and consoles for pathetic things like facebook and game "entertainment" so this way pc market will become smaller and more quality demanding
Ccp and valve are the only 2 big studios i know that create interesting game with good design and dont only care how to make money(and before anyone says blizzard is just cunning, they dont care about games at all) Signature removed for being not EVE related. Zymurgist |

I guess if you like mindlessly attacking the same creature hundreds of times in a row waiting for that one certain item to drop is successful, then sure.
There is a reason little kids play WoW. It requires no intellect at all.

as an update to my previous post:
In July 2008 CCP had to publish an overview of its finances as part of a bond offering.
Quote: Major Shareholders
At the date of this Prospectus there were 97 shareholders in CCP. The ten largest shareholders owned a total of 97.9% of the CompanyÆs issued share capital.
NP ehf 33.99 Teno Investments S.-.R.L 17.21 Reynir Har=arson 11.37 Arion safnreikningur 5.60 Matthfas Gu=mundsson 3.72 Hilmar Veigar PTtursson 2.82 Novator ehf 2.56 Frosti Sigurj=nsson 2.44 Fri=rik +rn Haraldsson 2.42 Gu=mundur Kristinsson ehf 2.39 Ten largest 84.52 Other 87 shareholders 15.48
NP ehf & Novator ehf belong to Mr. Bjorgolfsson who is broke and has agreed to forward any dividends/proceeds from his CCP shares to a consortium of banks which he owes money.
A little more up-to-date information on CCP shareholders is found here: http://www.dv.is/frettir/2010/10/16/eve-online-malar-gull-fyrir-ccp/ (Google Translate)
The fact that CCP did not issue a dividend does of course imply a strong desire to grow (and puts some pressure on CCP to make sure share value does indeed grow appropriately).

Successful=/=GOOD... Greed bases itself on stupid ppl. 90% humans of world are stupid!!!
WoW might have some slight depth in good combat but 98% of wow players have no idea how to play, they just play to feel better since they all truly know how pathetic they are.
EvE might have a lot more depth than wow but it also works quite similar to the mystery films. it makes the user feel smart but the truth is that it isnt as complicated as it first looks... Plus i have yet to see true strategy. no! strategy doesnt happen in first move aka my combination beats yours. It requires more than just a simple trap, it requires a plan and progression which rarely exist in matches since all that happens is team 1 unleashes his "plan" loadout, team 2 unleashes his "plan" loadout and the winner is usually easily seen from the beginning instead of a true close fight where both players turn the tables often when there is a trap. That or i just havent seen interesting strategies

Firstly let me say I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment here. However, please show me a games company which doesn't care about making money. Secondly, look at how much those "pathetic things like facebook" have made and tell me companies won't find that attractive. As a company, those stupid masses are your bottom line.
As for wanting the PC games market to bcome smaller, what sane games company is going to go down that road?
Finally to CCP, please devlop a typing window that shows me what I'm writing instead of making me fecking guess!

I never said that a company didnt care about money, i meant that there are companies who only focus on how they get that money, their games are pathetic and a waste of time yet they sell. Every company wants money but some actually try to get that by giving something good
Well leaving back a market to indie doesnt seem a good idea, publishers can still profit in a pc market even if it small but that would require some effort since the standards would have increased. Of course they will heavily get attached to facebook and consoles for free money but pc market will still exist, and it will still need good games and there will be some profit there which is not a good idea to leave it for indie in a publishers logic Signature removed for being not EVE related. Agreed.
This is (usually) the type of argument I used to give to Linden Lab. Unfortunately the downfall of their own 'dark' nature is coming about by other means (In their case, an earlier misguided effort in trying to cater to Corporate clients).
Here, CCP is now trying to cater to a wider audience. I'm not against that, they just need to be careful...

heh yeah and it's not even any good. Many of those players are blizzard fanbois, jumped on the mmo bandwagon with bliz after years of diablo and warcraft games, never even playing an mmo or even liking them. The rest is hypermarketing with image. It's about popularity and highschool homecoming queens. Yes for being public, it's all about money, and the image to get it, not the game.

When did Blizzard go public? When was WoW released?
More to the point: if CCP went public and the game became more WoW:ish as a result, why wouldn't it insta-fail like all the other attempts to be like WoW?
Right not the last thing you want to do in the MMO market is to be like WoW, for the simple reason that WoW is the best at being WoW (unsurprisingly) and thus they will eat your lunch if you try. Oh, and Blizzard have been remaking the same three games for the last 17 years, so noà they're not particularly creative. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |
