Random character bling has been pitched as a microtransaction thing for a while now, at present the only existing mechanic to do that would be to use PLEX. Now, do you want the CHEAPEST of these items to cost 1 PLEX (and have the corresponding ISK resale value when placed on open market ingame), or would it be better all round if things can be bought for part of a PLEX? Aurum is basicly pennies/cents to a PLEXs whole pound/dollar so small items can be purchased individually for a reasonable(ish, depending on how pricing is balanced in the end) amount each, whilst also preserving the mechanic of those items having a RL money cost somewhere down the line to warrant CCP being bothered to make it.
(As an aside I don't really like this route at all personally, but doing Au at least gets around the previously mentioned failsauce of slightly diff haircuts costing a whole PLEX each)
One thing I would like clarified is about eventually only having one "free" set of clothing and everything else being paid-for, you've said we wont lose our existing choice of free cloths/etc when that time comes (and that time better be damn well signposted in advance) but what about new chars created after that? Will they get the same choice as at current of free clothes/etc to dress their char with initially or will new chars end up starting with a generic vault-tec jumpsuit and have to pay for anything else? Also will new chars get a couple of free "makeovers" using only the default free stuff before they get locked into having only the one set of "default" clothes to use and havinmg to pay for any further changes? I can see it being so easy to rush through char creation and get something you're not happy with, getting stung for microtransactions on day 2 seems a little harsh Whatever you do (bar generic jumpsuits for newbies) you'll need to make it VERY clear to new players what options they do/don't have with regards to redoing their image later, at the initial creation stage.
TBH what's wrong with letting us frrely swap about with the existing (hideously limited) free stuff indefnitely, personally I don't see allowing that as likely to affect the market for luxory stuff much if at all, if people are willing to pay they will, if they aren't they wont no matter how hard you push them.

Sounds like you're planning to remove many of the existing free options at that time, then? What happens if I'm already wearing something you decide to remove?

Whichever free clothes you pick will be _your_ default set, Mynxee. We won't take away someone's chosen.
then suddenly
Originally by: CCP Hammer The future vision is that after being podded you will wake up in a clone bay in a medical gown. Then you will get your free orange noobie overalls (or whatever we come up with) but there will be all sorts of inexpensive stuff on offer to change into or maybe you weren't wearing your favorite stuff anyway and you can just put that one.
Which is it guys? Do we at some point get locked down to the set of free stuff we had at that time being our recurring "default" outfit, or do we lose access to what we have now and get thrown all the way to generoville? Clarification would be nice since you're contradicting each other here...

This will require a new piece of UI. Designed by CCP. Place bet now how slow, cumbersome and terribad "quickly switching to free genero suit" can become...

How do you pronounce that? Espececially the short form? Can you say it like a word or are letters needed (ay-you-arr)?
I read it as something like "oar-room" in terms of sound myself

The problem is that the new currency is not needed.
Everything would work exactly the same if CCP sold vanity items for ISK, instead of for Aurum which are bought with PLEX (or which you can get indirectly by purchasing vanity items for ISK that other players bought with their Aurem they bought with PLEX bought with ISK).
You just aren't getting it... By having a PLEX in the loop somewhere it means CCP have made money off someone, sometime, which is basicly the whole reason for them doing this. Make this stuff directly purchasable with ISK and it's "free" in that at no stage has CCP made any extra money in return for you getting that extrasuperawesome pair of socks.

Also - can we manufacture clothes and ship modifications with PI materials?
I just realised how this will work. When you buy some supoer pimp bit of clothing/shiprespray/whatever with your Au you don't actually GET it, you just get a 1 run bpc for said item, up to you then go acquire the resources to make it ingame yourself

1. When I created my character I chose an outfit. Will I always have instant access to this outfit wherever I go? Will I lose it when podded and have to shell out gold for it?
2. Does the new "vision" for waking up in a fresh medical clone increase the time it takes to get back out into space?
...or you could just read the thread. The only cloths that come with you are those that you bring. If you are wearing them and you get podded they are lost, and yes you need to use more 'gold' to get new ones. If they are in your cargo hold they drop or are destroyed like regular items.
Waking up in a new clone shouldn't be any different than docking and undocking post ambulation.
...or you could read the thread and see that Zinfandel and Hammer are saying diferent things about "default" cloths, really they need to try talking to each other before they post on forums
