I'm more concerned about the tournament this weekend. ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

Why EVE? No offense, but it's not the biggest game out there. The biggest MMO has not been attacked on a large scale yet. Sony was attacked through the PS3. So why EVE?
Makes you wonder. Lulzsec=nullsec?? Somebody's bots got banned?

I was thinking the same thing. At least one member of lulzsec has to play EVE, that's the only reason they would attack it so aggressively. I'm thinking that they're xbox owners, which would explain both the sony hack and these EVE hacks.

To put this in simple terms; This is an interruption of international commerce by an Technologically adept terrorist group. I am also strongly of the opinion that such idiots should be wiped from existence, killed, snuffed, terminated, etc. All they will do is continue to do so, unless stopped. If I were one of the CEO's, COO's, CFO's, of any of the affected companies then I would be calling my fellow victims and pool our resources while lobbying my government(s) to get off their butts as these guys threaten all of us, and also hire our own detective firm. Offer large monetary rewards also works well for good information. Then with the list of guilty conspirators names that will always be found if enough effort is put forth - hire mercenaries/professional problem solvers if you will. Ideally the national intelligence groups would do the killing for the companies, they are much more efficient at plausible deniability."PROBLEM SOLVED" Quickly, efficiently and consistently each & every damn time. When all such malicious hackers are treated this way then we will have much less volume to deal with. Would you risk your life if you knew this is what happens to you and your friends when caught?

Because it's not a real threat. Outside some rich western kids who have never existed outside social media and have no concept of "go outside and play" the rest of the world will move on just fine if the internet (lets just for argument sake the entire thing via a global DDoS) went down. We would all wake up, get breakfast, go to work, and have electricity. Believe it or not the world existed before 2004. De Oppresso Liber |

Probably did it for a laugh and then discovered it was easy to get CCP to shut their whole network down, so they did it again. I doubt they're targeting Eve because they have something against it, it's easy publicity.
I hope CCP have a backup plan for AT this weekend in case it happens again. Maybe a Dev Q&A, Incarna talk, take questions from players and the experts/commentators in Iceland etc. (would be a fairly large audience too, because many players not interested in AT9 would probably tune in, as well as those who want to know wtf is going on). Could easily turn a negative event into a positive one - or at least a not so negative one!
Although if their network is down they probably won't be able to stream any video :(

To streaming video IDK, To actually having the tournament they could just use one of their dev servers and tell both teams to submit the fit they have by say, Sat 00:00 time so its right by the tournament time but not directly when Lulzsec would want to attack. CCP gives them that fit on the test server, then any ship that is lost on there is removed or even killed (the winners want their mails) on TQ later. Its a logical fix.

Local reports saying they ddos'd and attempted to hack the CIA website. Honestly knowing the agency, lulsec's hubris will be their downfall. They only need to arrest the Americans involved. Under the patriot act they can get them to speak and tell everything they know.
I believed they got carried away and have now crossed a line of no return. ---

Nobody is hunting Lulz seriously. They are too busy after Anon because Anon is a huge POLITICAL thread, Lulz is not.

I don't think some of you really understand just how difficult tracking these people actually is.
I strongly suspect that they've co-opted one of the major botnets. For the uninitiated, a botnet is a large number of computers all affected by a specific strain of virus, with a listening protocol of some kind (the ghetto ones use an IRC channel, but there are more sophisticated and less obvious ways of doing it) by which a controller can give them instructions. This controller is sometimes itself an infected machine being given instructions remotely. When the correct command is given, they all execute it simultaneously - almost always a DDoS of some description. The IPs that the victim sees will be these infected machines, spread all over the world. Tracking the machine which sent the original command - and from there, tracking the human from which that command originated - is much, much harder.
Even if this is not the way they're doing it, I very highly doubt LulzSec are just running LOIC from their home PCs. They're narcissistic, arrogant and reckless but they're not stupid. ----- Andreus Ixiris CEO, Mixed Metaphor

Here is how it works..
Step 1: Problem ---> Internet games taken down annoying off people Step 2: Reaction --> People are outraged and demand action Step 3: Solution --> Governments get what they want at the request (step 2) of the people with no / little resitance (the people demanded it)
Lulzsec are called "useful idiots".
