EVE Online and related services are currently experiencing service interruptions. We are working diligently to prevent further interruptions. We have taken the API offline at this time and hope to return it to service shortly. We apologize for the inconvenience and we will have service restored as soon as possible.

It's another DDOS by Lulzsec, so likely it'll be pretty unstable for awhile as the ddos random kicks people and stalls out new logins.

It will be over once they realize they're doing nothing but putting themselves into danger of getting caught. I think this has been going on for so long just because most of them are too young to see that they aren't actually anonymous at all. Imho, they're youngbloods who just discovered all those little programs floating around the net and think they're "1337 h4(kz0rz", kind of like we all were when we were 20-30 years younger.

Yeh, this is pretty crap CCP. Not your fault, but everytime u take the servers down, it encourages another attack the day after.
If this keeps up, then it will be a good way for us to quit eve by going cold turkey
Srsly though, this is two evenings lost for me (my prime time), so I hope you will be compensating us for this (thats what insurance is there for), otherwise I see little point in paying for something I cant play during my free time.

It is indeed not CCP's fault, but some compensation needs to be made at some point.
Not only for the regular server crashes since 1.6 and the plethora of bugs it unleashed, but NOW the game is un-playable due to kiddie BotNet DDos crap, on an unprotected server, that CCP has had 8 YEARS of OUR money to have MAYBE configured a back-up server one would've thunk. **************************

I'm not any authority on the subject, but since a thread asking about how a DDOS effects participants is locked and somehow only related to this specific incident, feel free to reference the above link for generic information.
As always, make sure: - Your computer is fully up-to-date - You have a reputable antivirus - Uninstall junk programs - Uninstall those "helpful" toolbars for your browser. Yes, even the reputable ones. - Be wise about what websites you visit - If your computer is acting weird, feel free to ask a friend/workmate/trusted person to have a look.

No. If it was that easy, most of Anonymous would have been caught already.
DDoS = Distributes Denial of Service.
That's thousands of computers sending a signal to disrupt a service and there's NO way to tell which of them was the trigger.
I agree, though, that the more they do, the more the odds are against them.
But that doesn't say the odds aren't high for them anyway, which means it takes a lot of time until they get caught.

No, but at some point you used that email address on an EVE related site and they were either compromised or sold it.
Phishing mails happen all the time, directed at the customers of any online service. Be sensible. If the emails says "click this link and enter your account details" for any reason, it's a phishing attempt.

Some information about the countermeasures in place would be nice.
Yeah, I'd like to know all the info I need to access CCP bank account please.
Please use the brains, why would CCP tell anyone what countermeasures they are putting into place? That would be like asking them "Please tell us exactly how you catch people using bots (so we know what we need to change so we aren't caught!)

I have reported @LulzSec to Twitter and the reply from them said "As a policy, we do not mediate content, including potentially offensive content. We understand that everyone has different levels of sensitivity towards content, and that you may feel uncomfortable with the posted content. Lulzsec also have an IRC channel and a chat area at irc.lulzco.org and chat.lulzco.org which they advertised in a tweet. Both URLs DNS to IP addresses of servers run by a hosting company Gigenet in Illinois. I contacted Gigenet's online support team and reported to them that their servers were being used by LulzSec and they basically said they didn't monitor what their customers did and unless their TOS were broken, they weren't interested. I've seen no evidence that they've done anything other than use tools that are freely available online to download and rent botnets - the moment they pull off something original then maybe but at the moment these are just script kiddies running other peoples scripts at that.
They may have done some research in order to feel ****y enough to think that they can permanently hide under the radar but computing savants they are not.
Nothing that a good old bullet can't handle

please don't think that these guys are actually good. they're not if you REALLY want to end up in jail for a long time (no, people like that don't get government jobs) then you can google yourself to this amount of knowledge using other peoples tools and knowhow to get into places with penetrable security isn't magic im not saying they are dumb, or that trained monkeys could do it, but any programmer can with some effort there's a reason people don't do it, and certainly not brag about it: a single mistake and your life as you know it, is over
also consider, the fact that they have a name, a number, an irc server, a domain... a twitter page the fact that they exist to someone else other than them is their undoing.
ddosing causes them to lose their botnet fast, and now they are reduced to websites like cia.gov, which hardly is a feat just a taunt that will hasten their court date processing looking forward to them causing many lulz in prison for the foreseeable future
i was really annoyed at this gang of clowns, so i had to write all this.. now i feel all better back to eve!

I was thinking the same thing. At least one member of lulzsec has to play EVE, that's the only reason they would attack it so aggressively. I'm thinking that they're xbox owners, which would explain both the sony hack and these EVE hacks.

To put this in simple terms; This is an interruption of international commerce by an Technologically adept terrorist group. I am also strongly of the opinion that such idiots should be wiped from existence, killed, snuffed, terminated, etc. All they will do is continue to do so, unless stopped. If I were one of the CEO's, COO's, CFO's, of any of the affected companies then I would be calling my fellow victims and pool our resources while lobbying my government(s) to get off their butts as these guys threaten all of us, and also hire our own detective firm. Offer large monetary rewards also works well for good information. Then with the list of guilty conspirators names that will always be found if enough effort is put forth - hire mercenaries/professional problem solvers if you will. Ideally the national intelligence groups would do the killing for the companies, they are much more efficient at plausible deniability."PROBLEM SOLVED" Quickly, efficiently and consistently each & every damn time. When all such malicious hackers are treated this way then we will have much less volume to deal with. Would you risk your life if you knew this is what happens to you and your friends when caught?

Originally by: Long Huung To put this in simple terms; This is an interruption of international commerce by an Technologically adept terrorist group.
Is that you, Erik Prince?

Makes you wonder. Lulzsec=nullsec?? Somebody's bots got banned?
Probably did it for a laugh and then discovered it was easy to get CCP to shut their whole network down, so they did it again. I doubt they're targeting Eve because they have something against it, it's easy publicity.
I hope CCP have a backup plan for AT this weekend in case it happens again. Maybe a Dev Q&A, Incarna talk, take questions from players and the experts/commentators in Iceland etc. (would be a fairly large audience too, because many players not interested in AT9 would probably tune in, as well as those who want to know wtf is going on). Could easily turn a negative event into a positive one - or at least a not so negative one!
Although if their network is down they probably won't be able to stream any video :(

To streaming video IDK, To actually having the tournament they could just use one of their dev servers and tell both teams to submit the fit they have by say, Sat 00:00 time so its right by the tournament time but not directly when Lulzsec would want to attack. CCP gives them that fit on the test server, then any ship that is lost on there is removed or even killed (the winners want their mails) on TQ later. Its a logical fix.

Local reports saying they ddos'd and attempted to hack the CIA website. Honestly knowing the agency, lulsec's hubris will be their downfall. They only need to arrest the Americans involved. Under the patriot act they can get them to speak and tell everything they know.
I believed they got carried away and have now crossed a line of no return. ---

Soap is serious business in prison.
Anon != Lulzsec.
The hunt is on for Anon, as part of the WikiLeaks Wars...
Nobody is hunting Lulz seriously. They are too busy after Anon because Anon is a huge POLITICAL thread, Lulz is not.

I don't think some of you really understand just how difficult tracking these people actually is.
I strongly suspect that they've co-opted one of the major botnets. For the uninitiated, a botnet is a large number of computers all affected by a specific strain of virus, with a listening protocol of some kind (the ghetto ones use an IRC channel, but there are more sophisticated and less obvious ways of doing it) by which a controller can give them instructions. This controller is sometimes itself an infected machine being given instructions remotely. When the correct command is given, they all execute it simultaneously - almost always a DDoS of some description. The IPs that the victim sees will be these infected machines, spread all over the world. Tracking the machine which sent the original command - and from there, tracking the human from which that command originated - is much, much harder.
Even if this is not the way they're doing it, I very highly doubt LulzSec are just running LOIC from their home PCs. They're narcissistic, arrogant and reckless but they're not stupid. ----- Andreus Ixiris CEO, Mixed Metaphor

Here is how it works..
Step 1: Problem ---> Internet games taken down annoying off people Step 2: Reaction --> People are outraged and demand action Step 3: Solution --> Governments get what they want at the request (step 2) of the people with no / little resitance (the people demanded it)
Lulzsec are called "useful idiots".

Will CCP investigate players and BAN them if they are involved with the DDOSs?
In the Terms there is a clause that specifies that any intentional disruption or attempts to cause disruption and so on and so on is banable.
http://www.eveonline.com/pnp/terms.asp
Quote:
16. You may not do anything that interferes with the ability of other EVE Online subscribers to enjoy the game or web site in accordance with its rules. This includes, but is not limited to, making inappropriate use of any public channels within the game and/or intentionally creating excessive latency (lag) by dumping cargo containers, corpses or other items in the game world.
17. You may not engage in any activity that increases the difficulty and/or expense of CCP in maintaining the EVE Online client, server, web site or other services for the benefit and enjoyment of all its users.
21. You will not attempt to decipher, hack into or interfere with any transmissions to or from the EVE Online servers, nor will you try to create or use any third party add-ons, extras or tools for the game.
25. CCP reserves the right to close, temporarily or permanently, any userĘs account without advance notice as we deem necessary. Furthermore, we reserve the right to delete all user accounts or inventory of characters as warranted.

Considering that we live in a world of ultra-surveillance where computer pranks can get you more prison time than molesting a kid, and that the governments of the world would really love to make the internet very restricted in what you can do, say, and see, I would suspect that if DDoS attacks that really make people mad (hence clamoring for more laws) do not result in any arrests, then we know who is really behind this.
If you want this to stop, tell your "representative", if you still live in a country that has them, that no matter what happens, any measure to control the internet is not going to be acceptable.
