--- http://schedule.gdceurope.com/session/5322 ---
Priceless GDC Europe organizers have unveiled the full lineup for the show's Community Management Summit, featuring a keynote from industry veteran Gordon Walton on creating an online "code of conduct," SOE on controlling player backlash, and EVE Online developer CCP on learning from Jurassic Park.
Taking place Monday through Wednesday, August 15-17, 2011 at the Cologne Congress-Centrum Ost, alongside the major gamescom trade show, GDC Europe 2011 will again provide the essential pan-European perspective of game development and business trends.

I've worked in several different companies but most of the time it was a customer service position. Customers can indeed be rather rude or just dumb at times, but never have I ever degraded them to something less than human.
How unprofessional, even if she is trying to approach the topic with humor. Still very unprofessional.

Guys... have you ever been to one of these seminars? Its better to watch paint dry. The topic was raised in such a way that people would be interesting in what she has to say.
This was also brought up and announced before the incarna was released...
Not to mention that much of what happened isn't her fault, and while there are a lot of things not going right, there are probably a lot of things shes trying to get CCP to do, and they won't allow her to do her job due to many facts we don't know.

Quote: - In a lecture dubbed, "What Can You Do When Your Social or MMO Game Community Revolt Against You?," Alexis Bonte of eRepublik Labs will describe the ways in which player communities can revolt against developers, using examples including negative review spam, active trolling, and player strikes. Bonte will also explain how to fix a number of these problems, noting, "It's better to be loved, but many never will, so you need to be feared too."

IF anything its an bash against herself for learning from a Video, not the customer.
I mean we could spin it that we are "dinosaurs".
Or we could spin it that she feels powerless against a player base that has more apparent power then her position provides her.

So you keep saying. How does a degree make you competent at any given thing? Are you saying there are no people who are competent and even excellent at what they do who have no degree?
What degree does Steve Jobs hold? What degree does Bill Gates hold? Those are two off the top of my head. Having attended class and passed a few tests does not make you necessarily competent at anything other than achieving a passing grade.

Just like The Senior Priducer of EVE Online - CCP Zulu (Arnar Hrafn Gylfason) - has no education! No high school! No university!
... And most important, he has no degree (or skills) in COMMUNICATION, PR, Consumer/Customer Relations.

What part of what I said implied that everyone without or with a degree was competent? Your statement directly implied incompetence due to lack of degree. I find that statement silly. If you think she is incompetent, fine. State your reasons but lack of degree is not an indicator.

Absolutely agree with that.
I worked @ DreamWorks, I was the right hand minion to Corporate VP @ Clear Channel (trained his new middle manager and staff), I took care of a Hospital's Data Center plus Help Desk alone whilst my the rest of my team slept soundly in their beds, I took care of hundreds of Small Business clients with technical advise and support for six years (self employment) ....
My subjects in colleges were Behavioral Science, Electronic Music and Violin. I never graduated.
I keep a printed out copy of Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech to kick around my desk and to remind me that when my back is against the wall, I'm doing alright.
It's not Valerie Massey (CCP Games) calling the shots right now.

I believe when calling a persons competence into question I look at their performance and not their education. To do otherwise can cause you to reject people of quality due to an unreasonable and un-required bias. It's simply not useful.

So you believe that there is an equal number of incompetent people without degrees than there are with?
If so, you are ignorant. Degrees may not guarantee competence, but the knowledge that a degree indicates sure helps prevent incompetence.
I believe when calling a persons competence into question I look at their performance and not their education. To do otherwise can cause you to reject people of quality due to an unreasonable and un-required bias. It's simply not useful.
and how are we to judge ccpan's competence, based on the eve community at the moment not well i expect
I didn't post to defend ccp in any way. I posted to call bull**** on a blanket statement that has no merit.

You can judge her competence anytime. Just google eveonline and Pann and you will get a record of her posts since 2003... She did her job well, has good communication skills and even had her song on eve radio back in time.
Here is her interview with IGN if that helps.

There seems to be a gap between "talking about" and "applying".
Someone (^) must be feeling rather incompetent these days. The real humor will be seeing if the crowd can keep a straight face listening to her talk about being good at managing a community after this massive failure. - His name was John Turbefield!

Also you must remember that Eve originally a PVP game and there were a lot of heated arguments between "carebears" and "griefers", in fact most rage quitting was coming from such arguments. I think it's where the Jurassic Park comparison comes from, but you'll have to ask her when she'll come back.

I want to reiterate how humorous it is that CCP will be attending a conference where one of the sessions will be entitled What can you do when your social or MMO game community revolts against you? --- "The data does not support that polished quality sells better than new features." -Nathan Richardsson, Senior Producer at CCP |

Everyone who is cancelling their accounts should also contact organisations like these and tell them why they are doing so. The entire industry should know about what is happening here.

Seriously - where is the conference and can we get people to Picket outside?
As a very supportive community, we'll give them a 'live demonstration' of community unrest and allow CCP to demonstrate how to quell it. Right? This **** just went from virtual to REAL. THE PLAYERS WILL NEVER BE SILENCED!

OK... Heres an approach on recent events, using jurassic park as an example.
CCP Might be the T-Rex, But the players are the Raptors, and were nice and friendly and not a problem, until the AUR cost of powering the fence is realised to be too much, and the Raptors are able to escape. 1 Raptor might not be a problem, but 10 ****ed of raptors and the T-Rex is fraked.

Quite an interesting topic in the present times.
However, I think that many of you looking to it as a joke should re-access the content and possibly even the goal of that summit.
What I gathered from the points to be discussed was a meeting to go over the mechanisms in order for the companyto do whatever it wants to its customer base and still come out on top. The reference to "Jurassic Park" should be examined more critically. My impression is that we, the customers, are being compared to creatures with the brain the size of a peanut, read that "dumb" and easily corraled like a herd of livestock. This is outrageous in and of itself. At the least the customers of CCP should consider it incendiary and at worst more justification to stop patronizing the company altogether.
