Dont get me wrong I will happily 'PvP' but I need a reason, I have never really found it 'fun' to randomly kill things, in fact putting pointless effort into anything sounds quite depressing.
Ok so before I get you all raging and screaming 'carebear', my issue with PvP is there really is no need for me to do it, I wont compare EVE to other games but I will mention every other game has had a reward system in place for PvP.
PvE on the other hand has tonnes of rewards, rewards that you know are consistent, EVE is truly the first game where the PvP is so pointless there literally is no reason to do it, so lets look at some of the reasons people of why people PvP.
1. "To generate tears" - Well ok, I guess this is 'fun', but a person can generate more tears simply by trolling here than PvPing
2. "To have fun" - Such a ****ty reason as this can be said about EVERYTHING, it is almost like saying "because?"
3. "Killmail stats " - I dont post kills / losses, I really dont care when I kill / lose a ship
4. "Warfare!" - Ok this I can understand, it makes the most sense, people attacking each other for a reason, sov warfare, WH disputes, FW rivalry etc
There is probably other reasons but considering the economy is **** and people arent losing much, shouldnt PvP be looked into, perhaps if there was a reward system specific to PvP ONLY, maybe more people would PvP.
I would suggest some ideas but the odds of anyone reading this far are slim .

if your semi decent at pvping you can make good profit doing it/take paid for doing it. isnt that reward enough?

This is my reason for pvp'ing. Gotta protect mah space from other people trying to take it.

Seriously, if you asking the question you clearly have missed the point of Eve. If however you really want to know why you should pvp, I have one word for you... Tears. |

I would say the adrenaline rush for people that enjoy it. Everyone is not a fighter though. Thats why there is mining, PI,mission running, and other PVE too.

Has anyone ever attempted to explain why it is fun to some people to make other players feel miserable? I don't get the whole "tears" thing really.
I thought griefers where a tiny minority found in online games, people who most likey have ****ty life with a terrible job where they have to take **** all day from their superiors. Then they get home and go on their daily griefing routine as a catalyst for all their own frustration.
I don't think this is the typical EVE player though. This game takes some intelligence, patience, social competence... just to much effort for the average Joe Griefer.
So what is this "tears" phenomenon really? Why does EVE bring out the absolute worst in people?

Just go for 2, to have fun. Why else play a game if not to have fun?
(And yeah the people who have fun simply by making sure others dont have fun have some issues).

PVP is part of the competitive element of EVE. Testing skills under unpredictable circumstances. If you can't see this, I simply wouldn't bother with it.

for the challenge?
pve is easy, monotonus, the same thing day after day. im sure mining is the same (ive never done it) with even less of a challenge. pvp can throw up anything, when i jump into someone elses wormhole i dont know if ill have to lay a bait for them or if they will come invade my home system in force. i could be fighting 1 person in a hac, or 30 in bs's. they can grab any ship, with any fittings, using any tactics.
personally i have done nothing but pvp for 7 years and theres allways something different in each fight. i dont imagine pve could have kept me hooked for even half this long. |

It's so fun watching the bars when they go down. Hopefully your opponent's goes down first....The kill or fight is not the big part of pew pew. Fitting ships and finding targets. Setting up tactics for different ships and fittings that's where the big part is. The reason behind is to kill other ships and pods while putting your own ship/fittings/implants on the line.
There is more to pvp than just "pure" combat. Stealth tactics, scouting, jaming, bomb runs, awox. You'd be surprised about the sandbox if you start digging.
Not just undocking a maelstrom and lol target xxxx press F1 Align to sun..
BUT the number 1 reason for pvp is that we need to cleanse the eve-universe from Dramiels.

Some people PVP for profit. When you destroy someone's ship and receive hundreds of millions of ISK worth of loot, you realize that your "consistent PVE" income is quite miniscule in comparison. As for reward system, nullsec is full of them. Alliances and coalitions battle for sovereignty and moons. Fighting for a moon that brings you billions of ISK per month is a sufficient motivator.
In the greater sense, PVP supports PVE as a process of consumption. Miners bring minerals into the world. Mission runners bring loot & salvage into the world. If there is no methodology for these things to exit the game world, supply would grow and the prices of these items would nose dive. PVP provides that exit methodology as ships are destroyed, some cargo and modules are lost.

The PvE in Eve is pretty meh. Shoot red crosses, don't die. It doesn't take a lot of piloting skill or strategy to outwit the AI behind the red crosses.
But in PvP... there's (potentially) a real intelligent opponent behind that ship. There's a challenge to be overcome. There's strategies to employ, mind-games to be played, ambushes to be sprung/escaped from... the whole point of Eve is PvP.
If you don't find it, it will just find you and you won't be prepared to deal with it.

It appears that the answer isn't a matter of motivation, rather simply, its that you should not pvp. These reasons are enough for others, if not for you, then maybe pvp isn't your thing.

How is pve fun? Its same thing over and over, no matter what.
Pvp has different outcomes if you fly small gang/solo, never the same thing happens twice...no matter how often you pvp.

PVP is indeed quite pointless for most of the time. Only when you can secure good asset, of which there is only one in EVE (tech moon) cost/benefit ratio is pretty good. If you win.
Whether PVE activities are poor or boring does not matter. Too bad there is nothing you can do with your money that does not involve pvp some way. Stations can be taken away and supercaps get destroyed. EVE has a severe lack of industry goals.

I should have mentioned that I only fly logi's / fleet commands / dreads anyway, direct DPS is kindda meh and well why use a dread when you can use supercaps
Back in the day when I use to 'PvP' it was mainly the whole rivalry / ego Bushido in 0.0, but then supercaps got buffed and everyone NAPed everyone, as a result 0.0 became stale, not only that it went from POS bashing (with dreads) in multiple systems to shooting / camping a dildo

This point, that you compact into a single one and almost gloss over, is full of rewards. Pirating or suicide ganking has the dropped loot as reward, sov warfare has juicy nullsec systems as reward, WH have juicy t3 manufacturing lines, FW has juicy LP stores.
Rewards all around. So, honestly I don't get your question...

This pretty much. I love the mind games behind it all, particularly when I'm stalking in something cloaky. Watching someone's behavior and thinking "I know he knows, but does he know that I know he knows", that kinda thing is pretty interesting to me. It always reminds me of movies like "enemy at the gates", 2 snipers each hidden, surveying the battlefield for their opponent, never wanting to give up their position. It's a waiting game, a game of determination, of intelligence, and of intuition. When it pays off, and the kill goes smoothly and quickly, it is all worth it.
Non cloaky pvp is less of a mindgame. There may be instances when you feign weakness to bait your enemy etc, but i find most of the time the battle is won the second it starts. You're either kiting, and relying on your range to keep you safe, or you're scrammed and giving/taking a beating. There is very little in between. Frigate pvp is the most fun in my eyes, if only because it is cheap, and there are plenty of targets. The ability to move freely and pick your fights is probably the most valuable thing you can ask for in pvp.

I will if you first explain to me how a normally adjusted person would feel miserable about losing their internet spaceship in an internet spaceship game.

Personally I think it'd be pretty cool if the extended FW to cover the pirate factions so player could fly for Angels or Sansha.
Would also be nice to have Sansha FW players to join them for incursions providing a legitimate way to PvP in high-sec without a war dec.
Probably a load of issues in doing it, but would certainly be interesting to look at.
I think the most rewarding PvP happens in 0.0 when fighting over territory and resources. War decs in High and Low are also legitimate ways of competing over resources such as trying to scare a rival mining corp of your patch, or take out the POS on a moon you want to use yourself. A lot of it is just griefing though which is fine if that floats your boat.
But I think that competing over resources and for self defence is reason enough.

The goal is to get your enemy to rage quit. Especially if that enemy boasted about their strength and tried to act like a bully. Smash their shiny ship, over and over, and eventually they take a vacation from EVE and you laugh at them.
