Its not the loss of pixels, its the loss to another person.
Edit: Also for some the Adrenaline rush make them feel terrible even if they win.

Now that's what I don't understand. Sure its fun to blow up a fellow players ship because you outdid them in battle. But why on earth would you feel bad about it or another party feel bad about it? All your losing is in-game currency that can be very easily replaced.

Doubt I need to explain that, simply because this whole "tears" mentality wouldn't even be there if nobody cared about losing their ships. And then we wouldn't even be having this conversation in the first place.
exactly. So laughing at a spoiled child raging because they lost an imaginary spacehip in an internet spaceship game is entirely rational. The raging, is not.
It's not why I PVP but it is an added bonus to pop a spoiled child's balloon.

In 2002 an estimated 57,000 children were murdered worldwide.

In reply to the OP:
If you have fun doing high sec mining every day, then you are playing Eve CORRECTLY.
If you have fun dominating vast chucks of 0.0 with your alliance mates, then you are playing Eve CORRECTLY.
etc....
Those who disagree are small minded fools. Game depth ftw.

Why do people play chess/football/golf? (Admittedly the last one is dubious even in my eyes...)
It's about winning. Plain and simple. The 'rewards' you are looking for are, at best, a coincidence.
But then again, this is a sandbox. So 'winning' is an objective term.

On occasion I join anti-pirate roams. This is the only PvP I do. It may have the same amount of risk as kneejerk PvP, but no reward other than a sense of satisfaction and the knowledge that you may have made some griefer's day as bad as he made someone else's day earlier on. |

If you have to ask yourself this question then the only answer should be: you have no reason to PvP.
For me PvP in EVE has the BEST adrenaline rush I have ever experienced... and this is probably what keeps me going (even tho I lose more than I win *laughs*)
There is no grey-zone, you either love it or hate it.

This is the first game I have played where I have 'fun' PvE'ing, mainly because I like using Excel, playing around with API's etc
Like I said PvP was fun when there was conflicts etc but since sov warfare has been reduced to supercap lameage / blob warfare / single system combat it has gotten quite stale.
The other forms of PvP just seem like optional styles of play, to quote the other guy in the thread, I would be PvPing because I can.
Perhaps I have been out of the loop for so long that I cba PvPing or really, PvP is soo pointless atm the only reason anyone does it is because they can, exception being sov warfare ofc ;)
Right now I have no purpose to go into 0.0 / lowsec, I can do all my PvE in HiSec / WHs, without any need to PvP and while I dont mind PvPing I see no point in doing it.
I guess there needs to be a reason to PvP, kind of like a sov like mechanic in FW, something that is worth getting involved in and is far more entertaining than killing random people I dont even know. |

I kinda like pvp for the adrenaline.
Biggest problem for eve pvp is that the battle over before it starts. Winning pvp in eve is 90% metagame. |

The only reasoning behind proper PvP is your desire to test yourself in a challenging environment. You don't need any particular reward or stats (in the form of killmails) - your own sense of accomplishment drives it all. Jumping into a gatecamp or a roaming gang and killing some and making the rest flee while being literally alone - that is something cloaky guys with their 'mind games' or those warfare-tards will never understand, but at the same time these very moments and feelings after doing something creative while trying to find their weak spot to crack them open - those things is what still keeps me hooked. |

Ok, so im curious about this 'buzz' you guys are talking about, so im going to do something either really stupid or smart, get a load of disposable ships randomly go into lowsec and try to find inspiration
Although there isnt any reason for me to do this I am curious about what you guys consider 'fun'.
Does everyone still fly a drake / tengu in lowsec? |

Well actually playing MMOs especially EVE has helped me a lot in RL after all if it wasnt for EVE I probably wouldnt have improved on my spreadsheet skills, you would be surprised how much you can learn from games, even WoW helped but that was mainly because of the music.

Its called "inferiority complex". They just wish to drag everyone down to their level so they feel good about themselves.
I pvp for my corp and territory held. I have never gone after industrials or miners and never will unless at war or in our sov held systems. |

Originally by: Kalle Demos I should have mentioned that I only fly logi's / fleet commands / dreads anyway, direct DPS is kindda meh and well why use a dread when you can use supercaps
Back in the day when I use to 'PvP' it was mainly the whole rivalry / ego Bushido in 0.0, but then supercaps got buffed and everyone NAPed everyone, as a result 0.0 became stale, not only that it went from POS bashing (with dreads) in multiple systems to shooting / camping a dildo
There's the truth of it, I could not have said it better myself. Defined exactly and concisely.
For some, it's PvP, for others it's PvE. Who are any of us to say "play the game this way or else". Let individuals choose their own styles, but the fact is, Kalle summed it up 100%.
I would like to see Industry get a big boost in dynamics, there is so much potential there.
PvP or PvE, it's a choice. It's a paid game, people get to make their choice.
For me, PvP went stale since SC's. Started a whole fresh toon and now I just mission and explore, sometimes a bit of mining to make ammo or a component or two. So refreshing after so many years of PvP.
Cheers. Thorn Galen.

I actually understand the OP's dilemma quite well. My first experience of EVE was living in high-sec, running missions on a daily basis.
It got to the point that any time spent logged in should require a level of mission-or-salvage related profit, or it was wasted time.
I fitted a few ships for PvP and scouted through low-sec a few times, but I'm not a pirate at heart so when I find a lone guy footling in a belt I didn't feel entirely happy to just murder him in cold blood. Mainly because there was no real profit in it.
I was close to quitting when Factional Warfare was introduced. I joined the militia, and suddenly low sec was split into three groups :
1) Allies/Blues. Help them if you can. 2) Enemies/Reds. Kill on sight. 3) Neutrals. Be aware of them, and shoot them if they try to interfere.
All it really gave me was a REASON to shoot people. But that was honestly all I needed.

personally, i dont see anything to do other than pvp.
everything else in game (ratting, mining, sov holding, construction, etc etc) is done to make isk. but then what do you do with that isk? invest it in making more isk (seems redundant), let it sit in your wallet for all eternity (again, why?) or buy some big shiny toys to lose in a fight.
some of my old friends still live in nul, they moon mine, rat, plex, all they do is accumulate isk. a couple of them have several hundred bil in their wallets, but they dont spend it. they fly navy ravens which they never lose, pay fuel costs on their pos's and just farm isk endlessly for no reason other than to have the isk.
i on the other hand, live in a wh, pvp constantly, only make any isk when i need to replace something i lose. my wallet is generally below 50m because everything is invested in the ships i fight with. isk in my wallet doesnt help me, only in bigger guns and a stronger tank. im one of those people who pvp simply because i can, because i enjoy it.
those old friends of mine dont understand why i throw all my isk away in pvp, while i dont understand why they build up huge reserves they have no intention of ever using. we are different animals, so we do things differently. the point is, neither of us are wrong, whatever you want to do is the right thing to do. |

my only opinion is here. Carebear point of view.
Well. I'm 1.5years in game. I have big and fat wallet. And i like flying ships.
So time to enjoy some big explosions. =) If you have 1+ billions in wallet you simply can afford something like Drake to just buy, fit and blow.
I was never active in pvp. Even more: usually i dock and hide when enemy is near. But finally i enjoy taking my ship and go catch the enemy came to our place in 0.0. Just to shoot some missiles/bullets and try to get him.
I will not for sure go somewhere far away to find some targets. But luckily enemies visit me sometimes Little fun of lazy carebear |

There is no reason to pvp in eve online. For a game designed around pvp its a bit of shame and pretty much unbelievable that it hasnt given any reason to do pvp.

Because of how the mechanics work this game tends to attract some very bottom-of-the-barrel characters. They'll have you believe that their style (haresting tears) is quite socially normal.
The idea of Eve is a good one. But unfortunately all the freedoms it brings, the very sandbox nature, will have society's rejects come flocking here to pee, crap, and grief all over because it's a sandbox game and as Cartman says "I can do what I want". And as is typical from a griefer, it is always everyone else's fault, including their own behavior.
Grief a PVP'er. Run a mission today! |
