Even this news item isn't really EvE related, I believe that it still has place in GD because of the severity and amount of affected users it touches even in here.
My personal recommendation would be to switch entire browser to either firefox or google chrome at least for the time it takes from MS to sort this out. Their approach of installing additional "programs" and "rules" to prevent browser exploiting feels rather odd and difficult solution for common internet user.

In german media: "Microsoft und BSI warnen vor IE-Nutzung" - "Microsoft and Federal Office for Information Security warn against IE usage".
IT-Specialists are warning against IE usage for ages. That's nothing really new, except for Microsoft now realise what ****** product they have here.
There is only one reason to use the IE. To download a good browser. |

IE6 (and somewhat 7) are the problems. IE8/9 has been good browser. IE10 is immune to this vulnerability.
I did all those things already. And did it so I can only access 127.0.0.1 with IE. |

Not like the other browsers haven't had similar issues as well (not necessary ActiveX of course, but plugins and/or scripting stuff).
If you don't click on each and every link you see in comments or in emails you're pretty much save anyway. If you're using IE9 (you shouldn't use any older version anyway), enable Tracking Protection and ActiveX filtering (bot can be found in the "tools" menu under "Security") and you're pretty much as save as you can get. Just don't enable ActiveX on sites you don't trust and you're fine.
Also there's nothing wrong for them providing workarounds for the time being till they're able to deploy a bugfix. Should they not do anything while working? Looking for more thoughts? Read http://aethlyn.blogspot.com/ or follow me on http://twitter.com/Aethlyn. |

Sites only working on IE is just plain bad web design, there are standards for HTML and CSS for a reason.
I can understand it for corporate web apps, there's a lot of companies out there that solely use IE because of legacy software. CCP can't patch stupid. |

Yep this is very true... Personally I use "nightly" which is currently only 64bit development version available from firefox. It also opens me choice to install 64bit java. Wouldn't go to every site with this either and have installed "NoScript" addon to manually choose the sites I want to trust enough to let them run java/flash. It is all about risk management. Cons and pros...
What comes to workarounds they are always good, but if applying one is harder than installing another product, the purpose becomes unclear. Obviously anything is easy for someone who knows what they are doing. Some people have hard time updating their virus protection or answering simple questions operating system might ask now and then. "Common ppl" just want to browse and expect that everything works when you type url in and press enter.

That's actually easy since a lot of people like to use that one URL shortener service that pays to them. Not going to mention name because I hate it so much and you all already know what service I mean. |

Yep... ppl get real wake up call when they 1st time install programs/addons which actually (block and) show the scripts/advertisements what are running on sites they visit or which activate when they click some links. Suddenly many things what have been "too good to be free" start to make sense.

I'm sorry but speaking as a web programmer, if you are using Internet Explorer, you're doing it all wrong. There is absolutely no need to ever use that program. It isn't even compatible with the internet.

Another designer here with experience in both personal and corporate fields - I think I've spent more time 'fixing' everything to make it work in IE than I have designing and coding the websites themselves |

1. Home users should know how to use the software they use. If they don't, they deserve anything that happens to them. 2. Anyone who knows what they're doing uses Chrome... Firefox and IE are soooo 2010. 3. No business should have ANY users running unrestricted accounts by default. If they do, their IT guy/consultant/office guru needs to be either fired of b!tch-slapped.
This vuln really isn't a big deal. No need to get excited.
edit: I think it's cute how you "developers" talk... it's funny. When you've been doing this for nearly four decades get back to me. (PS: software developer since 1980; built first computer from resistor/capacitor up in 1979) |

yea... and I wouldn't start any browser wars in this discussion.
However if that is something what interests you and you want to read some stats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_browsers
...so clearly none of the three (IE/chrome/firefox) is ancient history. Different continents seem to have their own favorite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Countries_by_most_used_web_browser.svg and I find it as good thing that there is still healthy competition to keep the browsers and internet content evolving.
