Greetings more experienced Pilots. I am currently contemplating buying an alt that will be my cap pilot and i plan on using it to hot drop Carriers and Dreadnoughts and i don't know which Carries/Dreadnoughts are better... Now I know what the typical answer when it comes to which ship is better in eve and its usually "depends on what you want to do with it" and that is no real help to me right now... i really need to know what the strength and weaknesses of each carrier and dread are and which race would you choose if you could only pick one?... I'm looking for the race who's carrier and dread are best or at least the race who's dread and carrier together make a good mix of my needs...
What i need the dread to do: 1.Survive!!! Needs to be able to Uber Tank even if its DPS is slighty lower.. 2.Snipe... must be able to hit what its aimed at... i know that dreads are by no means sniper ships but having a 1 million DPS ship means nothing if you can't hit anything... 3.Alpha... Must instapop everything that's not a capital if at all possible...
What i need the Carrier to do: 1.Surrive!!! I know its repeated but i cant afford to loose caps... :) 2.Be cap stable or at the very least not suffer cap problems that are too bad... 3.Super JESUS rep EVERYTHING!!! preferrably shield but armor would work just as well... 4.and be able to do good DPS with its drones...
What i put above is my shopping list of whats most important to me starting with the most important and going down... if anyone has any additional criteria i should be looking at then please let me know cause i would hate to spend billions of isk on an alt character and not have it do what i need it to do... if you have independent information on individual carriers or dreads as far as which one is the "best" then please let me know which ones they are. Someone once told me that the Archon was the best of the carriers but he logged before i thought to ask him why he thought that was, so if anyone could clarify that it would be helpful... also it would be helpful to know what the strengths/weaknesses of each carrier/dread are and if you find yourself unable to suggest one single race then please list all of your favorite carriers/dreads in your order of awesomeness.... Thanks for all your input in advance... :)

You're playing supercaps online.
Your dread will be your coffin.

ask for your alliance's fleet fittings. It'll go faster.
If you're using these solo..... be very aware. Carriers can die to as little as 4 bs's. Dreads to not much more. Both are very vulnerable as ships go when solo.
If you are using them in 0.0 POS/TCU bashing, then the Revelation is one of the best. And the Archon/Thanatos are two of the more popular Carriers.
As for fits, again. Ask your alliance mates. You won't be able to get all of your "wants" in your list. --- microtransaction Noun (economics) A transaction for a very small amount of money. -- I will NOT buy items for real life cash. I pay for 5 accounts. Thats enough. |

Edited by: Cal Gin on 05/08/2011 03:17:55 I may not know alot about some things but im not stupid... i know that you dont solo in carriers and dreads and i know that you need a decent support fleet... the fact of the matter is im in militia and though are battles can get kinda big theres rarely REALLY big stuff on the fireld... all im looking for is a good fight... and something that can last until help comes... got lots of friends with lots of shiny stuff who wont come to the field unless there is already shiny stuff on the field and that of course is also how the enemy is... so it becomes a matter of baiting out the good stuff and thats what i want... im not a kill mail *****... just looking for a good fight and if my enemies die in the process then i can live with that...

the best dread is probably the amarr or minmatar one, but dreads cant hit really anything that is moving so being solo is suicide,
for carriers, galente do the most damage with drones, but amarr are favored due to larger armor tank, most fleet fights are armor tanked because the med slots for shield tanks are used for EW...
again though, a carrier is weak alone. as for fittings, T2 fit it, dont use expensive faction mods or anything, in most situations that extra 500 mil of fittings will not save u anyways...
finally, since it seems ur somewhat clueless if you MUST use this capital on TQ, use a carrier, as it is probably cheaper...

Why do I picture this guy soloing in his dread waiting 30 minutes for the guns to lock onto some rifter?

Ok here we go...
1) Carriers are fleet logistics ships, Dreads are fleet DPS ships. Both are 'glass cannons' so to speak, as they can die very quickly in the wrong situation ( ~90% of the time then)
2) Carriers are great ISK generators, you can make alot of isk running anoms in them.
3) Dreads really are glass cannons. Their use is limited and their position on the battlefield is precarious. That said, once they are in place and 'doing their thing', they are quite effective.
4) Carriers are very handy mobile bases. Like an Orca, but bigger.
5) No cap is ever cap stable. They are designed to give serious repping power. Some carriers have that, other carriers have serious cap xfer power. Horses for courses.
6) Why not create a new char yourself and train it up? By the time you jump into a carrier you will have a good idea of what they can do, and how they do it. Then you can practice while perfecting skillz. You might also have a decent income stream then to replace ur carrier easily.

Your "what it needs to do" lists are pretty much irrelevant. What you really need them to do is be useful in specific situations. Since you only know 1 capital pilot, you're probably not in a position to make use of either. They will collect dust until they die in a fireball.
(as you are not in an alliance that will use them in combat, the only use you will really have for any of them is POS repping, which means thanatos or the minmatar one... the thanatos also has combat bonuses that make it preferred by many. For dreads, the revelation has a major advantage in quick-switching ammo, close ranged weapons that can be used to POS bash, and probably one of the better active tanks, however you'd be absolutely brain dead to try to use one in combat, especially against a POS owned by any alliance that's bigger than yours. Whatever changes CCP is planning on making to super-caps this winter will likely not be enough to make dreads relevant but they'll call them "good enough" and have dreads continue to be completely obsolete for the next 5 years... Greyscale's gotta keep his RMT bribes coming in.)
In your apparent case, you'd be stupid to "buy an alt" rather than just making your own. It takes a little bit of time, but by the time you've got your alt trained up, you might be in a position to actually use one.

*sigh* i'm really not as stupid as i look nor as noobish as you all seem to think i am.... don't wanna train for caps on this account cause i'm using it for other things... also i realize that dreads aren't gonna be useful in most occasions and that a well fitted BS can easily get over 1,000DPS but when Dreads are useful they are dang useful... i will be flying the triage carrier most of all and while i may not be "rich" i am not hurting for isk and my comments has more to do about tanking ability rather than real concern for iskies... hell i have several friends that can build me all the carriers i need if need be... the trollage isn't really necessary and the comments by the non trolls have been help so thank you...

So why are you asking all those noobish questions in your OP?
Triage carriers don't use drones and are not expected to survive. Dreads are used in non-combat situations where they just grind structures of long-defeated alliances like they were used to bring IT/NC structures down after they were long defeated and they needed to be grineded.
Think of them as a Mackinaw - just more boring.

you want to buy a capital alt. and have it die in an outrageous solo ratting or something not-thought out. in any case, just dream about it.
