I feel that both servers (Tranquility and Serenity) should be merged because "the more the merrier".
Why does China have a seperate server?
Is it because Tranquility would be invaded by hoards of macro miners? Or is it because the language difference would cause wars rather than because of more interesting politics?
If it's because the universe is too small, surely the best answer would be to make it bigger?

Its because the Chinesse government has a strict control on internet access and they dont want chinese to log on to EU servers and "mindwashed" with anti-communistic ideas.
Cuba, Iran, China, and after 22nd november Turkey, are the only countries in the world that monitor and control personal information flow over the internet and have criminal laws and punishment for breaking these control mechanisms with the use of DNS, html, etc proxies.
So Mors praise, that you live in the free part of the world.

None of the above.
It's because the Chinese government are afraid that they won't be able to monitor their citizens properly if there are countless MMOs (that usually use decently encrypted connections) that can be used as a back-door to get past the internet filtering and censorship.

I used to have a Chinese girlfriend - I'm really surprised the Chinese Government would be bothered by a harmless game. Are you sure this isn't an urban legend? |

It's all to do with China's very strict net censorship laws and "The Great Firewall of China". They do the same thing for most online games. World of Warcraft, for example, has separate Chinese servers where besides the extra chat monitoring services etc that the government there requires, they also have different models for all Undead characters and NPCs (they look like slightly odd coloured humans), as displaying bones and rotten flesh "offends decency". |

Not an urban legend. Totalitarian regimes are obsessed with controlling their citizens lives. China has very strict laws regarding internet. Chines intelligence services tried to hack gmail accounts of those who were suspected in anti-government activity (publishing a blog can also be considered an anti-government activity btw).
There are also some laws that we consider bizarre, but apparently there is a reason for those - like you can't play an MMO more than 4h a day. Taking into account that there were cases when ppl in the Far East virtually played themselves to death, or killed over virtual property, those laws make sense. |

China is even more paranoid than Gadaffi and other dictators around the world, so no, im not suprised at all why they bother to block content from Europe. For example, when the chinese dissident got the nobel peace prize last year they firewalled everything that could be firewalled.

Because the Chinese government uses EVE to test their most advanced weapons such as prototype cloaking device (I) and civilian auto-cannons, most of the players in the Singularity server are soldiers from PLA (People's Library Army). Seriously, they have several spaceship launch pad under the West China sea! check the Google map and you will see them and they regularly test their smart bombs and try use them to cause earthquake in Japan. |

Surprisingly you CAN access Tranquility while in China, I was there for a duration in June/July and had no problem playing on Tranquility. And there are a few Chinese based players on Tranquility if you visit the Chinese chat channel, to some of them it's the step up from their out of date home server.
Ofcourse I don't doubt China's internet censorship laws have bearings on why we have two servers, but if my experience is still the case, you can choose which server to play on. Also, another reason is perhaps CCP thinks it would be better business in the Asian market if the experience was more lag free. Tranquility was playable in China but with noticeably more lag than say in the U.S. where I normally play. |

This seems a well researched and practical explanation.
If I was Chinese and I had the option, I'd probably try the Chinese server first because I'd want to be able to communicate with other players.
However, I think having one big universe is better because it's a core value of Eve, and it also sends an underlying message of unity, even though war games are the subject. |

1/ You have NO idea what it's like on the chinese server. 2/ Your idealism is leading you to saying stupid things where reality is concerned.
There are chinese players on Tranquility indeed, ask them how life is on the Chinese server side.
News we got from one of them years ago :
- 2 mega-alliances own everything - CEO of Alliance nŠ1 is also CEO of an ISKselling company (a real one, out of game). - players are forced to slave for one of the two alliances - those who try to play independently are "harvested" every day. It's the word he used, he said they call it "the harvest".
Every morning, Alliance PKs roam the galaxy in search of non-affiliated players and make short work of them. These Alliance PKs do nothing but PKing, their ships and equipment being provided by their alliance.
In short, the Chinese are hyper collectivistic imperialistic slaveminded nutjobs and you do NOT want them over here. Except in that it would surely make for an interesting cultural clash, it might likely ruin 99% of western players' gameplay.
Next time, think a little before daydreaming about "the more the merrier" and "unity". You rainbow pony.

Strange - it's Japanese culture to be with a large group rather than be an individual. I wonder if there are large numbers of Japanese on the Chinese server?
Personally, I think it would be cool to be on the Chinese server. I would want to be an individual and play cat-and-mouse with the harvesters. |

I think macro miners are a nuisance, but not a game-distroying one. Overall, I think the advantages of having everone on the same server outweigh the disadvantages. |

The Easy Answer:
FACT: China has a government that cares for its people.
FACT: China has difficulty educating everyone.
FACT: China's main goals are based in reality.
FACT: The Internet has the potential to cause problems.
FACT: China does not wish to be distracted from caring for their people.
FACT: The "Firewall" compromise is a balance of individual rights and overall good.
OPINION: China as a communist state has some pretty flawed thinking and would have much fewer problems as a democracy, that being said they have been doing a pretty good job. Their people are well fed, well housed, and desperate for an improved education system. China is actively working on improving education, but feels the internet knowledge could do more harm than good if not placed in-context.

Very interesting answer.
I thought it was only selected bits of the internet that were banned - such as p0rn.
I didn't realise MMOs were banned in China as well (unless owned by a Chinese company).
I can't imagine Eve being used to mount an 'Arab Spring' in China. |

Probably, but the measure is too extreme.
You could argue that we are 'saving the Chinese from themselves' by having two servers: Perhaps the Chinese Government want their people to not become ISK farmers, and do something more worthwhile? Seems a bit tenuous though.
