I had a Chinese girlfriend for a few years, but didn't visit China.
Why? Have you, and if so, what was your perception?
I am Chinese but was born in the UK, live here all my life but I have gone back many times and tbh Mainland China isn't as bad as what some people say it is
Originally by: stoicfaux If your government has to ban the Back Street Boys in order to preserve "national cultural security," then there's something wrong with your government.
China Blacklists Western Songs
Quote:
Hits by Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Take That are among 100 songs that have been placed on an internet blacklist by China's culture ministry.
Music websites have been given until 15 September to remove the offending tracks, which officials say harm "national cultural security".
The list also includes the Backstreet Boys track I Want It That Way, which was released more than a decade ago.
lol? I recently was on holiday in Mainland China and I'm pretty sure China MTV played many western songs that I would expect them to play. They even have a vast collection of old and modern western music for you to sing in the many Karaoke clubs.
Originally by: gfldex Mainland chinese law does not permit you to play more then 4h (IIRC) per day. That would put them into a rather bad spot in EVE. There are a few other regulation, like you have to run the servers in china and have a local company make (most) of the profit.
The chinese government is indeed quite odd but most of their laws make quite a lot of sense. They actually refuse to make the same mistakes then other developing countries (like the US) did.
Not sure 100% if this is actual law or not but even if it is nothing is being done about it if you go over your limit. I know of friends and family who game and they sometimes do more then 4 hours a day if they are off from work/school. The only limits I have seen on gaming is at arcades which are still popular over there, but the only rule is that 16 and under are not allowed into arcades during school hours which tbh is sensible
I am not completely defending the Chinese government because there are many things that are wrong that they can improve/fix etc but it seems that a lot of people seem to make Chine look a lot worse then it actually is.

one thing i'm assure :
1. Most of chinnese child live in tight budget, (no money to play at internet games cafe )so they do subjudged by adult to gain money such as in WOW ( gaining gold ) to change into RMT or something like for gameplay.
2. some adult works this child of poor family to play and paying them in so little money, but the child is satisfied cause they think : " i play i get money " win win solution between RMT and this children.
3. Some money well gained by using child rather like bot ( in wow they kind of group of hunter ) they tends to get as many as possible money to cover their expenses.
4. if serenity merged there will be a blob alliance of chinese that are doing gaining null sec in super blob to gain more money in null sec. you'll see

Not really. The Serenity is very much behind the curve when it comes to fleet setups, ship types, etc. Supers are rare on Serenity and even t2 fleets are rare. If anything the people from Serenity would be at a great disadvantage and really won't be able to compete for sometime.

It's an interesting idea that she could have been a spy from China! It's a bit far-fetched! For your interest, I still don't feel comfortable with the high numbers of executions for crimes that occur in China. So if I was brainwashed, it wasn't a total success. Having said that, I am fond of Chinese in general.
For your interest, we met because we lived nearby at the same university in England. Close proximity literally brings people together. The relationship succeeded because it had all three important components:
1) We shared similar values, such as hard work and ethics. 2) We had differences that appealed to each other, such as different cultural backgrounds. 3) There was 'chemistry'.

There is a lot of willful ignorance for the sake of political correctness and fear of being called racist in this thread. Fact is, Chinese nationals ruin gameplay and economics on MMOs where ever they are allowed to play in large numbers. Their way of playing MMOs is not compatible with the way most of the rest of the world plays, and is the real reason they have their own server.
That's not racism - that is reality. To pretend it isn't, and to pretend we don't all know it, is mass self delusion.

Well, my ignorance isn't willful - it's genuine - I've never played on a server with Chinese people.
However, in our Eve, many people make a career out of griefing others - Should we fear the Chinese, or should the Chinese fear us?

True.
Although i am not a Chinese, but i am pretty sure that the Chinese government does not prohibit their people from connecting to foreign servers at all, so the government censorship is the LAST explanation for the existence of Chinese server.
Basically they abuse gameplay mechanisms, imagine a EVE world that 50% of the players are can flippers or ninja salvagers. Imagine getting private chat spams in mission hubs, "You doing Lv4s? can u fleet me up so i can share your isk and standings?", but only shows up when salvaging your wrecks, without asking you in advance.
Of course these behaviors are totally legal in game, but that can ruin other players' gaming experience.
When the Chinese players in other online games want to bypass the well-known censorship, they go to Taiwanese (a small democratic country right next to China) servers, because they speak almost the same language. I know Chinese players caused lots of unpleasants in games such as WOW's Taiwan server because of their behaviors.
In order to keep the gaming environment healthy, the Chines IP is banned by many popular online games in Asia. If the game company still wants the huge Chinese market, they just make a special Chinese server for them.
If u can read Chinese, here are some reading materials for u to get more understandings on this issue.

Yes, there is a Chinese version of EVE, but the internet censorship is the LAST explanation for its existence, since the Chinese government dosent prohibit their people from playing on foreign severs (such as TQ) AT ALL.

Chinese legalities may not forbid their people from playing on our server, but it was the determining factor for CCP's decision to make a seperate server available to them. ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

I think what he is getting at is that Confucianism (the philosophy of Confucias) is a philosophical ideal in China. It's not a religion.
For example (from my personal experience) if you can demonstrate to someone in China that you live by the themes of Confucian thought, you are much admired. They are: humanity, ritual, loyalty, filial piety, relationships, and being a gentleman.
However, people do fall short of these ideals in China - it happens, but they are not so respected as people who can live their lives by them. I hope this makes sense. Confucianism

Even more spam than is already endured and massive amounts more botting, RMT, and exploitation is "quite welcome" to you?
Only thing I can suggest is try playing another MMO where the China isn't put on its own server and let me know if you still welcome them flooding Tranquility.

I think CCP are making a good effort to reduce botting and spam (plus RMT and exploitation). Although they will probably always be there, my perception is that they are more of a nuisance than a game-distroying thing.
I think the main problem of merging the two servers is that the universe would have to be significantly enlarged. At the end of the day though, I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
For example, some people say that the Chinese do more can flipping, and hassle mission runners more. As a mission runner myself, I would actually welcome this because it would make things more interesting and varied.
