It's a dirty tactic, but we all know it happens. Often in large fleets I've heard an FC tell the fleet to convo spam a certain character (usually the FC of the opposing fleet) causing their client to lag out severely or even crash. This works even if that character has their client set to auto-reject conversation requests, as the requests still get sent to their client.
The conversation requests of course cause the incoming traffic to saturate the target machine so much it can't respond to legitimate traffic. This is literally what is known as a denial-of-service attack.
Previous petition responses, however, indicate that this is not considered an exploit. How does that make any sense? I understand that our coalition and at times our alliance is guilty of doing the same, but that doesn't make it right. When I've been in fleets where the FC has said to convo spam a certain person I've never done it. The EULA specifically states:
http://community.eveonline.com/pnp/eula.asp
Quote:You may not take any action that imposes an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on the System. "The System" here refers to the client system, which includes the server and all player clients connected to the server. Furthermore:
Quote:User Content that you cause to be communicated to the System may not... (iv) contain any viruses, Trojan horses, disabling code, worms, time bombs, "clear GIFs," cancelbots or other computer programming or routines that are intended to, or which in fact, damage, detrimentally interfere with, monitor, intercept or expropriate any data, information, packets or personal information. Conversation spamming clearly violates both of these terms of the EULA. The relevant sections are 6.A.1 and 10.C.iv
So the question is, shouldn't this be declared an exploit? http://themittani.com/features/local-problem

I don't do it though, because to me it's practically the definition of an exploit. http://themittani.com/features/local-problem

Conversation spamming clearly violates both of these terms of the EULA. The relevant sections are 6.A.1 and 10.C.iv So the question is, shouldn't this be declared an exploit? Let me address this:
The EULA clearly says "You may not take any action that imposes an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on the System."
Sending somebody a convo is an action "you" perform. The system is designed to support a conversation request from "you." One request does not break the game. Likewise, each of your fleetmates also may convo anyone they choose, so long as they don't do so in a way that causes their single response to be re-propagated automatically or in some other way cause lag to the system, they have performed a legitimate function of the game. To whit, even the FC calling for everyone to do this is not an exploit, per se, because they haven't directly taken action that presents a disproportionate load. In fact, when the FC attempts to convo the target, their request is just as valid as any other request which has been sent.
So in short, the answer is "you" aren't doing anything "wrong." Only taken as a whole does the attack cause a strain on the system, which isn't any different than jumping your giant fleet into jita and enacting lag and ti-di. It's just a natural part of a lot of people playing a video game in a persistent environment.

In that same vein a "ping" generated by any single computer in a botnet is not illegitimate network usage, but thousands of pings from thousands of computers can be harmful and the wrongful act is by the person who controls the botnet. Do you really believe that if your FC asks you to convo a specific pilot that you are suddenly and inexplicably not allowed to perform this normal game function? Just because somebody asked you to?
That isn't a very sound position, and it's no wonder CCP doesn't classify it an exploit:

Warping away from someone who is attacking you is also a normal game function, but whenever that someone was CONCORD this wasn't allowed. Eventually CCP just changed it so that this was impossible, but previously CCP specifically stated that warping away from CONCORD was an exploit. Regardless of the fact that the game allowed you to do it just fine. http://themittani.com/features/local-problem

How is CCP going to act on this if there is no evidence of the FC's order?
Without evidence of the order (which happens on TS) what are they left with?
A bunch of attempts to convo somebody in local with you.
That's the point. Without evidence against the FC, this thread's whole premise is borked.
And CCP seem sensible enough to know they will rarely if ever get actual usable evidence for this.

You'd have to be seriously naiive to think that a whole bunch of people who all happen to be in the same fleet convoing a single person all at the same time are doing so for legitimate purposes and not actually trying to cause that person to lag out. In any case the intent doesn't matter, just as putting a huge number of cans or drones on gate isn't necessarily intended to cause lag. Suppose the can/drone droppers really just want to make it so cloaking ships can't activate their cloaking device. They still have to drop a huge number of cans/drones to do so, which causes lag, which is considered an exploit. http://themittani.com/features/local-problem

t's clear that the Committee has agreed that your new policy is really an excellent plan. But in view of some of the doubts being expressed, may I propose that I recall that after careful consideration, the considered view of the Committee was that, while they considered that the proposal met with broad approval in principle, that some of the principles were sufficiently fundamental in principle, and some of the considerations so complex and finely balanced in practice that in principle it was proposed that the sensible and prudent practice would be to submit the proposal for more detailed consideration, laying stress on the essential continuity of the new proposal with existing principles, the principle of the principal arguments which the proposal proposes and propounds for their approval. In principle. |

Yes. Unfortunately, although the answer was indeed clear, simple and straightforward, there is some difficulty in justifiably assigning to it the fourth of the epithets you applied to the statement inasmuch as the precise correlation between the information you communicated and the facts insofar as they can be determined and demonstrated is such as to cause epistemological problems of sufficient magnitude as to lay upon the logical and semantic resources of the English language a heavier burden than they can reasonably be expected to bear. |

That might work, but it still depends on whether or not the targets client first receives notification of a convo request. If the client has to get the request before sending out the pre-defined fee, it would still end up producing the lag that the OP was referring to. Profit favors the prepared |

When you set your client to block incoming conversation requests, the server only knows about this by knocking at your door to see if you are set to accept incoming convo requests. If the block-flag is set, the server sends a reject back to the client requesting the convo. You as the intended recipient should not even see a Chat GUI popup at this point in time. That is how it should work. Can anyone confirm if this is how it is or not ?
Given the above condition, the server takes a quick peek at your client settings for each and every convo request, so in essence, your incoming IP traffic is increased. Your client will not suffer as much compared to if the GUI actually popped-up for each inbound request. If the GUI does pop-up, that will no doubt cause a much heavier load on your client.
I would suggest to the CCP DEV to set a simple flag for the client. You should be able to set this on or off. Almost the same as setting the block characters setting, but not quite. Here's the logic flow of it :-
IF ClientA is in a fleet, prevent any outgoingchat requests from ClientA if any or all of the following conditions are true :-
- intended recipient is not in your Fleet . - intended recipient is not in your Corp. - intended recipient is not in your Alliance. - intended recipient is at war with you. - CCP should give everyone the OPTION of disabling LOCAL whenever the Client wishes. Flooding local with traffic is also quite a problem.
Other than that, set your CSPA charges to 100 Million ISK to make them pay if they want to play the ingame DoS game by mail-flooding you if they are unable to chatflood you. If CSPA cannot be set to 100 Million, then CCP should probably make the change to allow this.
Just a thought.

You are going to have to prove that convo spamming actually crashes a client. I've been convo spammed by somewhere in the ball park of 50 people and once I setup autoreject it was smooth sailing. Didn't get any lag from tons of convo requests, just the normal UI jitters it always gets.
If it were to be the case then it would be an exploit same as 500 people dropping 500 cans to lag out a system is an exploit.
But I have a feeling someone did something dumb and is blaming it on convo spam or a client crash. I know I blame my dumb mistakes on lag all the time. |

If your internet is so bad that you get disconnected from mere requests (that still gets denied) to the client, you need to throw out that modem and come join us in the modern era of technology.

Darth Gustav wrote:James Amril-Kesh wrote:It's a dirty tactic, but we all know it happens. Often in large fleets I've heard an So the question is, shouldn't this be declared an exploit? Let me address this: The EULA clearly says "You may not take any action that imposes an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on the System." Sending somebody a convo is an action "you" perform. The system is designed to support a conversation request from "you." One request does not break the game. Likewise, each of your fleetmates also may convo anyone they choose, so long as they don't do so in a way that causes their single request to be re-propagated automatically or in some other way cause lag to the system, they have performed a legitimate function of the game. My 2 isk.
A while back and I didn't have much involvement so I don't remember all the details, but I'm sure someone else here dose. Someone in FW got all butthurt about something and filed a petition. This person encouraged other to copy and paste this complaint into their own petition. Anyways some action was taken against some parties involved by CCP. What ever load was created by these people probably didn't create ingame lag. Hopefully someone involved will post with more detail. Do not assume-áanything above this line-áwas typed by me. no anti-personnel mines, only "secure" anti-tank mines (which can be activated/deactivated remotely and disarm themselves after a set period of time, several hundred euros a piece), no ABC weapons, no cluster bombs, no depleted uranium shells (using tungsten alloys instead - which are significantly more expensive), no targeting of civilian or medical infrastructure [or historical sites for that matter] (which gives enemies free reign of using them as shields/cover), fair treatment for civilians and POWs (even if the civilian population harbours insurgents), ... every time a soldier fires his weapon (in combat) an investigation by the military police has to follow (and the basic assumption underlying the investigation is that the soldier was in the wrong)

Nothing is appropriate in war, you do what you have to do to win. If you have to exploit to win, maybe you are on the wrong side of the war. War isn't a pretty thing whether it's inside a game world or in real life. there are no real rules to it, you just do what you need to do to win. Ask any military force in the world about this.
Actually, not so in real wars.
America, in any war they have fought since WWII, have refained from using maximum force even at the cost of losing a war, Vietnam for instance. Too old, tired and ugly to care. |

Intriguing, should call out a separate list of primaries now for the direct use of convo spam. You'll go through fleets much faster, and when they get back on do it again until they're the last one standing.

Serious question for you James Amril-Kesh,
If you view convo spamming someone as being so bad, so against the law, so terrible. Why are you waiting till now to make this thread when your own main FC has been telling you guys to convo bomb Elo Knight for over a month now, maybe two. Why now bring it up? Why didn't you make this thread a long time ago?
Answer me that.
Also everyone else needs to please note that the battle where Razor lost 19 carriers iirc and a CSAA was in fact lost due to terrible placement of the carriers and the fact that they were only able to be cap stable for about two minutes before capping out, thus unable to rep. Anyone can go to the kill boards, plug in the fits they used on EFT and see in cold hard truth, they were terribly fit.
But yeah, answer the bolded questions James. We will all wait.

Ignoring the fact the CFC have been using this tactic for a while now, ignoring the fact being convo bombed has not been proven to disconnect a players client, ignoring the fact the reason their carriers were obliterated because they were not cap stable and ignoring the fact checking a simple box stops convo bombing dead in its tracks...
I would suggest that there be two boxes to check. One for convos and one for fleet invites. Also there should be a fleet icon to accompany the invite to fleet message and a chat icon for convo invites. Also when a cling is invited to a fleet/convo, while the window is up the player client should tell the server to hold all further invites in a queue on the sever side, not the client. Once the invite is cleared via close or accept, then the players client request the next invite from the queue on the server.
Of course I'm no computer programmer so I don't know if that would help at all or perhaps this is the way it is handled anyways. All I know is I find the motivation by the OP and his buddies for these threads to be driven solely because they made several mistakes that cost them to lose a carrier fleet several support fleets and a baby titan.
Trying to blame all that on convo bombing hoping their enemies are banned and all their ships and titan are replaced is asinine.

Why didn't I make a thread about it earlier? Thanks and fly safe. OOC, if you experience lag and your client crashes in a fleet fight, does this indicate you should always suspect convo bombing and report it to the GM's?
Because the truth is it almost always happens during tidi, where there will be a lot of DC's and lag due to fleet fighting.
I'm just wondering if there are any indications, if players have convo requests automatically set to be automatically blocked, that might clue a player in?
Maybe the block should be server-side? He who trolls trolls best when he who is trolled trolls the troller. -Darth Gustav's Axiom |

Yes, it seems like this needs to be looked at more closely before "internal discussion" becomes policy, because I can see a new wave of "petitions" coming from every last member of any null fleet who disco's during a fleet fight because there's a reasonable possibility they were convo bombed. Hi Gustav,
Not intentionally; I don't have many people blocked anyway.
This is why it's best to take it to the GMs though - they can see the server logs and would know explicitly what has happened.
Again, speaking just as a player, here the rules are quite specific, with regards the Terms of use.
In particular point 16: You may not do anything that interferes with the ability of other EVE Online subscribers to enjoy the game or web site in accordance with its rules. This includes, but is not limited to, making inappropriate use of any public channels within the game and/or intentionally creating excessive latency (lag) by dumping cargo containers, corpses or other items in the game world.
If you suspect blocked people are breaching that ruling, then again the GMs are the people who will know for sure.

Fair enough, but this type of attack requires multiple attackers and is different than that.
It is most like the type I mentioned. And without a way to detect it, this is a can of worms.

But if convo bombing worked on someone who was rejecting conversation requests automatically (which it would, since the traffic is still there), you're vulnerable no matter which you do. So there's really no point in auto-rejecting chat requests. So you'll know when you're being convo-bombed, the result is the same either way, except now you have more reason to believe you should petition. http://themittani.com/features/local-problem

Players can either choose to not block by default, which leaves them vulnerable but allows them to know if they were convo bombed, or they can block by default, which saves them from petty annoyances but doesn't do anything to stop the convo bomb. A spy's knowledge is worth nothing to a GM, who will have logs (lots of them, a tedious amount even, perhaps) to go through in order to correctly dispense "justice" for this "misuse of the system" where everybody happens to press a button at the same time.
If the nuisance is disabled, you have no way to know if you DC because of normal lag or convo bomb lag. This means you would be foolish not to petition if there is a resulting loss.
I'm tryng to say we don't need tons of people petitioning this knowing GM's might reimburse them now or hand out bans or something. A good spy in the right fleet is going to pass on who this is happening to. If that person suddenly drops out, it's not exactly hard to figure out what happened. But yeah, I'd suggest starting with a temporary ban for all parties involved, say, a day to start for the first offense, then getting progressively longer. This post should have ended the thread. It is spot on.
I would imagine that it's use is so common CCP is reluctant to open this particular can of worms as it could potentially eat up huge amounts of time to verify.
A better solution would be when you have your client set to auto reject convo's from people not in your address book they should be stopped at the server level so that they do not affect your client. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

The host should simply not accept so many convo requests for the same person within a short amount of time. Spam filters and timers in chat rooms are nothing new, they used to exist in the 1980's before the internet became popular. If more than "x" convos are requested with a player within a time-frame, the host should process the first few and give an error/busy message to all the other requesting parties. The fix is absolutely trivial. If the host is actually sending convo requests to players even when they have the block flag on causing them to DC, the programmer responsible needs to be taken out back and shot.
This tactic is used quite often, I've had it used on me. Never DC'd because of it, never lost a ship because of it. But it's a stupid tactic that has nothing to do with internet spaceships and everything to do with sloppy programming. |
