Dev Blog by Hellmar dated 2004.03.14 21:27:13 CLEAN UP YOUR CANS PLEASE
CCP the warning was given a year ago, and the "unfair" advantage these cans give corps/players in high sec space is obvious, both in industrial terms (using them for mining at the belts) and in advertising (recruiting and sales).

There are secure cans all over space that have been completely abandoned. I haven't seen anyone using one in a heck of a long time.
This is a complete waste of server resources.
I propose that every December 31st be "Can Day". If on 24:00 on December 31 the can is not in a hanger, it disappears.

I can't really see them being a problem for the server's resources.
It's ridiculous though that just about every station and gate in >= 0.8 space has at least 1 (normally more) secure can there.
And as you said, I think a lot of them are abandoned too. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

I'd pined it down in couple of ocasions. Yes please we need one great cleaning in da EVE house.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.
EVE universe looks so ugly with all these cans and nobody can touch them or just redistribute ownership if you like it that way.

Why they didn't just chance secure cans to have a time limit on length of anchor duration when they made the change all that time ago I don't know. Would have solved the problems now and the problems of the future. Ah, hindsight, a lovely thing

forget the secure cans, the bigger problem right now is the standard cans that are littering space everywhere. 1.0 all the way down to 0.0. They can't be destroyed in 0.4 and higher cause of CONCORDOKKEN! and they cannot be scooped or anchored, they are literally trash left behind. Much worse than secure cans cause they can be jettisoned near gates and stations at any range.
CLEAN UP STANDARD CANS!

- secure cans in high sec should be unanchored or at least free to shoot - normal cans should be scoupable or free to shoot - lost drones should be cleared after 24/48 hours (most of the time at an agent mission spot = waste of server resources)

Perhaps what needs to happen is along with the price of the can, you pay extra for a "per month" the can stays unused cost. For example: Cost of Large Secure Container= 100k. -comes with 30 days in space after last time used. So, if you use it it stays...don't use it for 30 days and on day 31 can goes away. Increase the price of the can by say 10-25% for each month additional. This way if you only get out to a can once ever 3-4 months you dont lose it(provided you payed for at leat 4 months worth of inactivity), but it's YOUR choice on whether or not you want to lose it through inactivity. Maybe give a 3 day warning appear in your mail that x-can will expire on such and such a date unless utilized. Or something like that. Just an idea.

I'n pretty sure at least 80% of those are completely forgotten by the owners. It's just too easy to buy a new can and move it where you want, and too hard to keep track of all old cans

Give secure cans a 3 month duration and normal cans a 24 hour duration.
Give a weeks warning, then pop any cans over that age.

CCP can we have some kind of respone to a year old Dev Blog that still is qa problem please ?
Even if the answer is .... if( (type>=167238) ((READ ANCHORED CAN)) and systemSecurityLevel>=0 ) then unanchorCan(),;
It's not hard to do, politically (EVE internal) or technically.
I have to agree also with the 24 limit on normal cans, but thin that secure cans should be 7 days (168 hours) before they pop automatically.
24 hours ? Mor than enough time you need to do something, if not then scoop/relaunch.
168 hours ? 1 week of unattendance of a secure can that has been anchored.
Please address this issue.
BTW, I didn't think of being "CONCORDOKENED" if you tried to take out even a NORMAL SMALL in >= 0.8 space with the current "security measures" that are in place :/
CCP, (falling on my knees) CCP, please remove or allow the player base to REMOVE this junk. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

The known universe's ancient asteroid fields are truly diverse. They include veldspar, scordite, pryoxeres, plagioclase, omber, kernite, jaspet, hemorphite, hedbergite, gneiss, dark ochre, spodumain, crokite, bistot, arkonor, ice and the nearly extinct mercoxit. Together they maintain environmental systems that are essential for life in Eve. They influence market prices of a wide variety of ships and modules essential to a thrieving economy. They help stabilise the universe's economy by storing large amounts of minerals that would otherwise contribute to escalating economic disasters.
These ancient asteroid fields are home to millions of miners who depend on them for their survival - both physically and spiritually.
These asteroid fields also house around two-thirds of the universe's low-end rats. That's hundreds of thousands of different rats, and literally millions of lame modules in their loot cans - their futures also depend on the ancient asteroid fields.
These magnificent ancient asteroid fields are under threat from abandoned containers. More than 87 POD pilots have been lost do to the lag when loading; in the next 10 to 20 years, the universe looks set to lose thousands of miners. But there is a last chance to SAVE these ancient asteroid fields and the people and rats that depend on them.
Make sure your home system is friendly by visiting our clean asteroid fields.
We implore CONCORD to create an environment where our asteroid fields are clear of Secure Cargo Containers in the most sensitive and protected regions in space.
For this we ask CONCORD to allow environmental concious pilots the ability to help clean asteroid fields.
Become an Anti-Secure Cargo Container cyberactivist to join the growing number of people taking a stand for the last ancient asteroid fields.
The Anti-Secure Cargo Container League (ASCCL), is a non-profit organisation, with a presence in 40 systems across Amarrian, Caldari, Minmatar and Gallente regions.

simple solution - all anchored cans are made accessible by any players after 1 month of being left unattended (player is sent eve mail 2 days prior to its status being changed to standard unpassworded cans) this might encourage more players moving around seeking out anchor cans becoming standard and openable - after being made a standard can the can stays there until emptied then blows up like cargo.
Other is anchor goes to standard after 1 month then remains active until emptied or 1 week then it blows up
Dont think this is a big strain on CCP servers as im sure they are upgraded regulary. To new technology etc
Same goes for standard cans if unused for 2 weeks a 2 day notice is sent out to owner - after that they remain active for 1 week or until emptied by any passer bys
Quite a simple solution that removes the advertising by corps and other cans around planets stargates, stations etc and cleans up the game universe.

- jetcans should stay as they are - other cans should NOT be protected by concord (this results in being shoot at - so they age automaticly and disappear) - maybe give some more hp to the normal cans - about 50k should do the trick
should be a quick change for the devs and solve the can spam

As someone pointed out standard containers becomin problem in 0.5 and higher systems. I don't know when it was changed, but now no one can scoop these containers into cargo. It was possible some time ago.
Developers need look at it and change how secure cans and standard cans are handled in game. These containers can't be imune. Especially if I look at owners many of them are property of characters who did left game ages ago.

The only other alternative perhaps is to drop a few of youre own anchor cans around key hotspots - if to many get crowded around they might all get removed ? leave the odd shuttle there as well

While we're nuking cans that are WAY past their due date (a noble, nobly ideal in its own right), can we clean up empty noob ships? There's ships out there sitting at moons, safes, whatever that are months, if not years old. I'd like to see empty noob ships and shuttles expire at downtime ideally....

So we have the following:
- Unanchor secure cans
- Allow players to scoop UNANCHORED secure and especially normal cans (it's rediculous that we can't by the way)
- Get rid of abandoned noob ships (as the poster said, it should be a daily maintenance job or a 24 hour expires)
- I think we should add abandoned shuttles to that list but that may be a problem because they are paid for (maybe a 7 day limit?).
Anything else that CCP should think of when (if?) they do what they said over a year ago ? -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

I used secure cans before I found the ease of using jettisoned cans.
I now can't even remember where I anchored them so would be quite happy if they were removed as they must be a pain in the ar$e to other players especially if they want to secure a can near where mine is.
I thought this would be the case anyway
A secure can that is unused for a certain period should be removed from the game.
