Dev Blog by Hellmar dated 2004.03.14 21:27:13 CLEAN UP YOUR CANS PLEASE
CCP the warning was given a year ago, and the "unfair" advantage these cans give corps/players in high sec space is obvious, both in industrial terms (using them for mining at the belts) and in advertising (recruiting and sales).

There are secure cans all over space that have been completely abandoned. I haven't seen anyone using one in a heck of a long time.
This is a complete waste of server resources.
I propose that every December 31st be "Can Day". If on 24:00 on December 31 the can is not in a hanger, it disappears.

I can't really see them being a problem for the server's resources.
It's ridiculous though that just about every station and gate in >= 0.8 space has at least 1 (normally more) secure can there.
And as you said, I think a lot of them are abandoned too. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

Why they didn't just chance secure cans to have a time limit on length of anchor duration when they made the change all that time ago I don't know. Would have solved the problems now and the problems of the future. Ah, hindsight, a lovely thing

forget the secure cans, the bigger problem right now is the standard cans that are littering space everywhere. 1.0 all the way down to 0.0. They can't be destroyed in 0.4 and higher cause of CONCORDOKKEN! and they cannot be scooped or anchored, they are literally trash left behind. Much worse than secure cans cause they can be jettisoned near gates and stations at any range.

- secure cans in high sec should be unanchored or at least free to shoot - normal cans should be scoupable or free to shoot - lost drones should be cleared after 24/48 hours (most of the time at an agent mission spot = waste of server resources)

Perhaps what needs to happen is along with the price of the can, you pay extra for a "per month" the can stays unused cost. For example: Cost of Large Secure Container= 100k. -comes with 30 days in space after last time used. So, if you use it it stays...don't use it for 30 days and on day 31 can goes away. Increase the price of the can by say 10-25% for each month additional. This way if you only get out to a can once ever 3-4 months you dont lose it(provided you payed for at leat 4 months worth of inactivity), but it's YOUR choice on whether or not you want to lose it through inactivity. Maybe give a 3 day warning appear in your mail that x-can will expire on such and such a date unless utilized. Or something like that. Just an idea.

Give secure cans a 3 month duration and normal cans a 24 hour duration.

CCP can we have some kind of respone to a year old Dev Blog that still is qa problem please ?
Even if the answer is .... if( (type>=167238) ((READ ANCHORED CAN)) and systemSecurityLevel>=0 ) then unanchorCan(),;
It's not hard to do, politically (EVE internal) or technically.
I have to agree also with the 24 limit on normal cans, but thin that secure cans should be 7 days (168 hours) before they pop automatically.
24 hours ? Mor than enough time you need to do something, if not then scoop/relaunch.
168 hours ? 1 week of unattendance of a secure can that has been anchored.
Please address this issue.
BTW, I didn't think of being "CONCORDOKENED" if you tried to take out even a NORMAL SMALL in >= 0.8 space with the current "security measures" that are in place :/

The known universe's ancient asteroid fields are truly diverse. They include veldspar, scordite, pryoxeres, plagioclase, omber, kernite, jaspet, hemorphite, hedbergite, gneiss, dark ochre, spodumain, crokite, bistot, arkonor, ice and the nearly extinct mercoxit. Together they maintain environmental systems that are essential for life in Eve. They influence market prices of a wide variety of ships and modules essential to a thrieving economy. They help stabilise the universe's economy by storing large amounts of minerals that would otherwise contribute to escalating economic disasters.
These ancient asteroid fields are home to millions of miners who depend on them for their survival - both physically and spiritually.
These asteroid fields also house around two-thirds of the universe's low-end rats. That's hundreds of thousands of different rats, and literally millions of lame modules in their loot cans - their futures also depend on the ancient asteroid fields.
These magnificent ancient asteroid fields are under threat from abandoned containers. More than 87 POD pilots have been lost do to the lag when loading; in the next 10 to 20 years, the universe looks set to lose thousands of miners. But there is a last chance to SAVE these ancient asteroid fields and the people and rats that depend on them.
Make sure your home system is friendly by visiting our clean asteroid fields.
We implore CONCORD to create an environment where our asteroid fields are clear of Secure Cargo Containers in the most sensitive and protected regions in space.
For this we ask CONCORD to allow environmental concious pilots the ability to help clean asteroid fields.
Become an Anti-Secure Cargo Container cyberactivist to join the growing number of people taking a stand for the last ancient asteroid fields.

simple solution - all anchored cans are made accessible by any players after 1 month of being left unattended (player is sent eve mail 2 days prior to its status being changed to standard unpassworded cans) this might encourage more players moving around seeking out anchor cans becoming standard and openable - after being made a standard can the can stays there until emptied then blows up like cargo.
Other is anchor goes to standard after 1 month then remains active until emptied or 1 week then it blows up
Dont think this is a big strain on CCP servers as im sure they are upgraded regulary. To new technology etc
Same goes for standard cans if unused for 2 weeks a 2 day notice is sent out to owner - after that they remain active for 1 week or until emptied by any passer bys
Quite a simple solution that removes the advertising by corps and other cans around planets stargates, stations etc and cleans up the game universe.

- jetcans should stay as they are - other cans should NOT be protected by concord (this results in being shoot at - so they age automaticly and disappear) - maybe give some more hp to the normal cans - about 50k should do the trick
should be a quick change for the devs and solve the can spam

As someone pointed out standard containers becomin problem in 0.5 and higher systems. I don't know when it was changed, but now no one can scoop these containers into cargo. It was possible some time ago.
Developers need look at it and change how secure cans and standard cans are handled in game. These containers can't be imune. Especially if I look at owners many of them are property of characters who did left game ages ago.

There's ships out there sitting at moons, safes, whatever that are months, if not years old. I'd like to see empty noob ships and shuttles expire at downtime ideally....

So we have the following:
- Unanchor secure cans
- Allow players to scoop UNANCHORED secure and especially normal cans (it's rediculous that we can't by the way)
- Get rid of abandoned noob ships (as the poster said, it should be a daily maintenance job or a 24 hour expires)
- I think we should add abandoned shuttles to that list but that may be a problem because they are paid for (maybe a 7 day limit?).

I used secure cans before I found the ease of using jettisoned cans.
I now can't even remember where I anchored them so would be quite happy if they were removed as they must be a pain in the ar$e to other players especially if they want to secure a can near where mine is.
I thought this would be the case anyway
A secure can that is unused for a certain period should be removed from the game.

If you read the blog that was written over a year ago then you'd realise that the "easy fix" was discussed over a year ago.
What was BROKEN is the fact that you can NOT scoop insecure cans in empire, which actaully compounds the problem.
People are dumping small standard containers left, right and center KNOWING that they can't be destroyed (thanks CONCORD).
On top of that there are god knows how many giant secures at >= 0.8 belts being used for mass mining, and the secure being used for advertising.
CCP, do what YOU said a year ago, get rid of them !
And fix it again so that "unanchored" and "standard" cans can be scooped. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

I am sincerely sorry for any inconveniance I may have caused to any of the players in Rens or Jita (where I dropped 31 smalls each using my main(?) alt Jaabaa).

As it's been stated, a solution is to bill the person anchoring the can by Concord or whichever faction's space it's in. The cost doesn't have to be large, just a few hundred isk for renting that small part of space - all that matters is the user gets a bill for the can being anchored; therefore reminding them it's there. Ok then what about Anchoring 100 small secure containers in 100 different systems or more?
ItĘs funny we will get band for or a warning for leaving a bag of garbage but if we walk along and slowly empty the bag were ok? Is this not what people are doing?

wrangler though you are a good man I know its your job to keep these forums clean but honestly
I know you can see as well as we can that this is a problem and that its not getting any better I knpow my old corp (does not exists anymore) still have several anchored secure cans that was anchored for the corp and since they where they can no longer be scooped
my point is either the cans expiring after a period of time (90 days for secure ones for instance and 7 for normal ones) would make us happy
I would also like to get ships added to this and I dont just mean Noob ships and shuttles any ship left unattended for 90 days should pop unless it was behind a POS shield (maybe even then)
it makes sense from any perspective as cans would be bombarded with metorites in space and everntually get destroyed

That's probably something you should post in the Features and Ideas Discussion forum.

Hmm features and ideas wouldn't server problem. Because this forum have no bug section, general suit it best. We got promise year ago and instead working solution we have bug not being able scoop normal containers as we had before.
Shooting containers shouldn't be considered criminal action in any security system and then I guarantee I would voluntarily place my ship for whole day shooting on containers to clean-up mess. Did anyone just go and look at belts in systems with security 0.5+? There are more containers than rocks!
Piles of secure and standard containers just jettisoned in space and labeled with stupid signs or recruitment cover stations and gates. Even 0.0 is polluted with abandoned containers in belts, over stations and gates.

Edited by: Aelita on 27/04/2005 08:07:20 Hey! Will CCP do something with cans around? If yes then when? When servers will stop working? Check this or this. Will EVE space become can junkyard?
I'm calling for general cleanup over one year, we got empty promises and only bugs (now is not possible to scoop even standard containers into cargo).

Edited by: Heifetz on 18/05/2005 14:52:32 The idea of having some sort of time limit on every single can in EVE, while reducing the amount of cans would also require a huge amount of extra processing power to get the job done.
Instead:
Sollution 1: Simply make it easy for players to self-regulate their cans. All items in space owned by a player or corp appear in their assets folder, and can be remotely trashed just like items in stations.
Sollution 2: Unanchored cans have a 2 hour limit like jet cans.
Sollution 3: If a persons account has been inactive for more than 2 months, their cans dissappear.

Since Eve is so very fond of its "Professions" and related skills, how about just introduce the skills for "Garbage Collector", that way anyone that felt that the Galaxy was in need of a clean up, they could. You could have skills such as Sanitaion Engineering, Biowaste Hauling, Selective Refuse Collecting, and Dog Kicking :)
You could even introduce new ship classes, such as the Trash Barge, which could leak stinkinax green ooze all over the highway.
This would also give jobs to the thousands of unemployed Researchers and Scientists.

Since its a bug, maybe not?
Unanchored cans are supposed to disappear like jetisson cans--but they don't. And standard unanchored cans can't be scooped either.
I propose a protest. Industrials manned by annoyed players could meet at Yulai DED X filled with small standard cans, and could set a 20 jump course through the heart of secure space, where they will dump a single standard can at every gate.
If all of you here are interested, EVE-mail me with a simple "yes I'll do it" or something and I can pick a time and post a thread about it. If the GMs don't like the idea, they better go smack the devs and have them fix at *least* the basic standard-cans-can't-be-scooped bug. -- The best description of alliances, ever:

Edited by: Chrizto on 19/05/2005 07:45:17 I vote for secure cans to decay when they're unused for 3 months.
And those named jetcans and unanchored cans... ignore them, they Should (hint) decay in about 2 hrs.

Something as actually implementing the anchoring skill would work. If i remember correctly the amount of objects you can anchor was supposed to be part of the skill. So just implement it.
For each level a player can anchor 2 objects in space.

Your other ideas are all good, but this point is not. While certain implementations of a time limit would be processing intensive, there are ways of doing it that are not.
For example, if we say that anchored cans expire if left alone for 1 month, or even a week or so, the exact time of death isn't all that important. So you don't need to check to see whether the can should die very often. It could easily be added to the list of clean-up tasks done during daily downtime, and so have no effect on live-play processor load at all.
Also, if you look at the way current jettison containers expire, they don't go pop at the exact second, or even minute, that they go over the 2 hour period. The can cleanup seems to be handled by some sort of garbage collection routine, not a seperate counter on each can. This routine would just cycle through all the cans in the database constantly, checking for expired ones. So if your can has 1 second left to go when it gets checked, it lives, and will live until the garbage collector comes round again. The great thing about this system is that the processor usage can be easily tuned based on current server load. If server load is high, you just slow down the garbage collector. Which is probably why I've had cans last 3-4 hours at busy times - though relying on them after the 2-hour mark is very foolhardy! Incidentally, a similar system seems to be in use for removing expired market orders, hence why some of them can sit there for a while.

Cans have the owners name written all over them, yes?
Pirates, lock'em, load'em, and take down names. When the corpses start piling up, the word will get out...
"Stop littering."

Cans, cans, everywhere there's cans ******* up the scenery, breaking my mind Do this, don't do that, can't you read the can?
And the can says 'Anybody caught trespassing will be shot on sight'. So I jumped the gate and I yelled at the camp Hey! What gives you the right!? To put up a camp and keep me out, or to keep Mother Arkonor in. If a GM was here, he'd tell it to your face, man, you're some kind of lamer...
