i found out about eve by typing "space combat trading game" into google... my BBC B / Acornsoft Elite doesnt really cut it anymore
EVE may not be advertised in the UK, but it's easily purchasable in box-form. I got mine that way (although I found out about it through a follow-up review in PC Zone(was it PC Zone? Something like that...). I see EVE in almost every game shop I go to, a whole rack of 'em usually.
Also, I never got a game-code in my box (even though it was new). Had to make do with the 14 day free trial. So between the laughably out of date manual and the huge patches you'd have to download anyway, I can't recommended the boxed version anywho.

OK if they actually advertised you guys would whine that there are too many on the server. Consider every Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and many more fans out thier. The dream of 100k online would be instant.
I hope they keep it hidden. I hope they dont show off the greatest game ever made.

I agree with the original poster....I live in the United Sates and just by chance ran across Eve in a store. I have never heard 1 word of advertising and can confirm that alot of my aquaintences and friends (who are hardcore gamers) have never heard of it. Advertising has proven to be a critical point in the sucess of any product. If they expect Eve to grow and survive they really need to consider an advertising campaign.

At first they were planning on releasing EVE in both Europe and US at the same time. But they had problems finding a European publisher, and for a while it looked like EVE would come in the US first, even though the servers and everything was in London. 
After a while they found a European publisher, but they went and made some deal with a British gaming store, giving them exclusive rights to sell EVE for the first few weeks. So EVE was more or less released in the US and UK. If you wanted it in the rest of Europe, or the rest of the world, you would have to import. 
I think it's still possible to get an old box if you want to, but I think EVE is mainly downloadable now. And I think we will see a lot more MMOGs that are released through the internet only, no box versions. Most games offer download and buy deals, and some goes so far as to only offer it that way. 
Oh, and lets not turn this into some silly US vs Europe war.

By the time I looked for the game in stores, Summer 2004, it had already come and gone. I think it would be wise for CCP to rerelease the game, and maybe purchase a couple 1 page adds in PC Gamer, if the hven't recently.
Oh and by the way, Nero Scuro, that is at least two off-handed remarks about Americans that you've initiated here on the boards in the last few days. Just because you may have lived here, doesn't give you merit to make any type of comment about us. You're bigotry is not appreciated.

The Problem with downloadable games...NOT everyone has a 10.0Mbps connection with the internet. So if I was to lose my hard drive or the files get completly corrupted, it just aint worth my time to download the game again, even though I have the original box cd.
What Eve store should do is offer CD's with the current patch. I for one would buy one.
Free-form Professions, ensure no limetations on professions. Be a trader, fighter, industialist, researcher, hunter,pirate[/i] or mixture of them all.

I agree 100%. I run the game on a modem until my telco can join the 20th century. I keep patches save on a burned CD, but a full reinstall that requires a full patch would just kill me. Downloading the whole thing (which I did once about 6 months ago) took I think a day and a half...

Every time I mention the game to someone they try to run out and look for the CD, even though I tell them to go download it. While I love the idea of a game I can download instead of buying physical media, a lot of others head to game stores to find things to play.
Would it be instead better for CCP to just simply advertise in stores like EB Games and such, since they don't have physical media to take up shelf space alongside everyone else? Make some really flashy posters, get em put up in stores. They may not come in droves, but it's better than no advertising.

I really dont have a problem downloading a 600Mb game, and I am on 56K most the time. Its still faster than ordering online and waiting for the box to arrive in the mail, or finding the time to go and find a boxed copy from a store. I had to do a complete re-install only a couple of months ago following a nasty hard disk failure. Luckily I was at home and on a 300Kbps connection - started the download in the morning, went to work, came home and it was done. Half-Life 2 (and assorted extras)...now THERE was a game that was a pain to download.

I do live in the US myself (although I am Danish) I also did in fact buy Eve at walmart a box copy (still have it)
my complaint is what many other ppl here has said NO ADS at all for Eve
this is very upsetting to me due to the fact that Eve is a great Game
I feel that CCP need to buy some airtime on the major networks (TV) having some screen shots and telling peoble that you can try eve (for free) for 14 days
the only expense in getting Eve for anyone is the time in downloading it so there would be nothing lost if ppl dont like it
I just think its a shame that evenings my time there are useally less than 4000 ppl online (thats when there should be 10-12K ppl online as the Americans get off work and school and gets online)
also in regards to the gaming CD with the current version (especially after Exodus) was a good idear 3 months ago and its a good idear now

When Planetarion was shutting down some ppl in the alliance i was in, Virus, told me about eve which was just comming out of beta...i found the box version at the nerd store, CompUSA, stopped off for a hamburger and a shake in my pick up truck wiht meh cowboy hat on (YEEEHAWWWW) then started playing...havnt stopped since arrrrrr

I purchased my old EVE CD back in Best Buy in '03 when it came out.
Was still in the States then. But even if I wasn't what's the point? It's available to Download...for FREE! That's 50 bucks I could have saved had this been available two years ago.
And yes it's correct that most of us in the Stats have broadband (thanks to cable which is sorely lacking down here in New Zealand!), so go download it. There are very few people playing on-line games in the States who would dare touch a dial-up modem these days.

I heard of EVE from friends here in Texas.
Fortunately for CCP this was not during a weekend of constant crashes, or I might have heard negative things about the game and not signed up!

I see 3-5k ppl online between 5PM and 11PM my time
there are what over 300 mill Americans (yeah not sure of the exact number)
also I remember E&B having 20k ppl online at the samme time
I never did play everquest but I also understand that their numbers are way higher than Eve's
my opinion is that this is because no one has heard of Eve
and I feel that CCP need to get the word out better
again this is just my opinion and you may feel my opinion is wrong however that does not make it stupid

E&B also had the marketing department of EA to help it out with advertising the game. They did everything but fly over major cities dumping propaganda leaflets on unsuspecting citizens.

Why? Because then the servers get overcrowded, you get 13 year olds playing who don't understand anything, and you get 13 year olds who just go around doing senseless killing.
Also, a very popular game creates competition between game companies so if Eve became known by everyone with internet acces and a computer, then you get companies like EA who develop a knock-off of Eve for half thesubscription cost and huge advertisments that end up killing Eve.

Doesn't matter. EA only supports their MMOs for six months then starts pulling development team members off the project for new Sims expansions, and the game dies a quick death. Never played any EA games anyways, so I was just assuming that because they're a big company, they can afford to have smaller subscription fees.
