By Forums, I mean, all forums. Not just the Eve forum. Broken is probably an exaggeration, but what I mean by this is that they're not fulfilling their intended function properly. These forums should be here to get an idea of what their whole player-base thinks about their game. At the moment the forums only show CCP what a very small minority of the forum users think.
What is happening, is that someone with no sense of how the game works posts something about how terrible Eve is and then everyone berates them for it. In turn making sure their thread stays at the top of the forum subsection and therefore making it one of the most read and discussed topics.
So what I'm basically saying is that half decent ideas or topics dont get any discussion and the terrible threads end up at the top. Where-by CCP only get to follow those terrible topics.
Instead of every post in a discussion shooting that thread right up to the top of the page, each post should raise it up by one place. And we should have a "Do Not Want!" button that will lower it by one place.
This isn't exactly a fully fledged idea, its just a concept. CCP needs a function within the forum to keep good, well thought through threads up the top of the forum pages where they can be seen and better discussed instead of all the crap that's there now. |

I said it wasn't a full fledged idea. It's just a concept, otherwise this would be in the Features and Ideas section. I am saying that we need some method of keeping **** threads that nobody wants there, away from the top of the forum. |

I guess, but there's always the bump tactic to move a thread to the first screen or so. I don't like having to do it, but for certain sub-forums e.g. Bugs/Workarounds, they seem to be so infrequently commented on or read, that I have to do this sometimes. |

Or maybe as a part of owning an account, you are forced to make one sensible post per month... or well maybe not.
Isn't this how forums in general work though? If something isn't discussed it gets forgotten and lands way back. While active stuff gets more exposure (regardless of it being terribad or not)?
Other options is also to sort by good/bad rating... if we could do that (and ourselves chose how to sort, not global sorting).

Forums do not reflect the majorities and minorities of opinions and mindsets of a community. Period.
Since a small group of forum dudes can claim to be the majority, sure it is dangerous to listen to a handful of ppl who are able to start various threads about a topic which then looks like many people would actually care and demand a change etc.

What, CCP is incapable of looking at page 2 or scrolling down?
Quote:Example: Instead of every post in a discussion shooting that thread right up to the top of the page, each post could raise it up by one place. And we could have a "Do Not Want!" button that will lower it by one place. You're still leaving the thread's position manipulation up to the forum users. But I like this one. I know several OPs that could use a lot of negative bumping.

I disagree. What is more often happening is that people whom are VERY very knowlegeable about many of Eve's finer points & actually like Eve come here to point out its weaker points. Its the nature of almost all internet forums to come over as negitive much in the same way that news broadcasts show more train wrecks which leave a bigger impression then the warm puppy stories due to ratings.
Also the forums have become poloitical soapbox to lobby the DEVs to force thier part of the sanbox onto everyone else: Meta-gaming for NULL SECCers: Whine on the forums like a little ***** until CCP gets sick of you and hands you everything you ask for just to shut you up. |

I think people are misunderstanding my intention.
I'm not looking for one method over any other. I just think CCP needs a better way to measure the popularity of ideas posted on this forum. The "Like the OP" system is terrible. We should be able to rate threads good or bad (rather than posts), and yes I know this would be prone to exploitation, but only as much as the system we have now. Even with people exploiting the system CCP would still be able to get a better idea about popular opinion.
That way, you could read a thread and show you don't support the idea, without bumping it to the top. Read it, down rate it, and move to the next one.
Barrogh Habalu wrote:I believe that forums should have "sage"-like function, i.e. you post without bumping the thread in which you post.
This is also a good idea, if you absolutely have to post to say how terrible a thread is, you should be able to do it without keeping the damn thread constantly talked about.

Its because ccp neglected the player base for years and this is a very addictive game with a high level of "me"-feeling (dunno whats the words exacly). So loads of ppl took 3 yrs of bad bad reputation building, neglection and bad negative image and felt treated like ****. In the end the player base are customers and no one likes to be treated like a unwanted customer. Add the tartget group to it, high educuted intelligent people that have good memories and you create over a long period the most unwanted forum trolls full of hate that cant stop playing. And thats where we are now. No one is a born troll, you get made into one. And thats all their fault.
Any market gurou knows that is much much harder to "fix" a unhappy customer than making a neutral customer happy. Unfortualy for CCP, eve's target group is very small and survavability depends on "fixing" the unhappy customers. Besides that, trolling has been intergrated in ingame social mechanic's like in politics. Look at goons who claim "moral wins war's, not fights". They are right in that so people think trolling is a normal thing to do. Look at Kugu, its designed for trolling. Trolling is in eve a normal thing to do. Why? read above again. CCP made it, now it is at a point it is not fixable anymore. Like the techmoon holder's unlimeted isk stash creating game breaking disbalancements for years to come. Chribba is right. The reason youtube got so popular was because it allowed people to indivudually sort and find videos. And an enourmous construvtive spread of information ensued. Of course this isnt in the interest of the TPTB hence youtube is constantly devolving and sorting by rating and all these kinds of stuff you could do back then have been removed.
Anyway, maybe these forums are working as intended, as CCP does not want light to be shed on apparant problems. They do not want the information to flow, its typical behavior. Its easier to hide the problems than to solve them. |

Let's inject some risk into the forums and make three buttons, like, dislike and add bounty. To eliminate forum alts change it so that only the pilot on your account with the most time in space, as in the one you undock with the most, can post.
If a dislike button were to be added and some sort of ranking system used where by dislikes purged the thread from the system, I would prefer it be an individual setting that only effects what I see. By this I mean i go into my profile settings and say 10 dislikes will cause a thread to not be displayed. This way I can control only what I see, this way it's more pure content control and not just a popularity contest or some more ******** meta gaming. I mean what happens when two big alliances go to war and they start disliking each others posts? There's enough hate in the game as it is, allowing it to spill over into the forums via a ranking system is recipe for disaster.

I like your ideas, especially those on eliminating forum alts.
You could do this a little easier by just handing out a "Main" tag to every player (not account). Players could assign this tag to a single character and it will display on the forums (like a little M in the corner of your avatar portrait). This way you could know if you are dealing with a main or a forum alt and could react accordingly.

This is moderation in it's extreme. And I don't think it would really help much. You may get fewer trolls posting, sure. But you would also end up with many massive walls of text, where people try to cram as much content into each post as they can. Aside from the idea just leaving a bad taste, it's also a little inconvenient for everyone.

This is pretty cool, although I'm not sure about the way of deciding which character is your main. That sounds a little extreme, although it would work fine for me, I'm sure there are ways this could be exploited. |

That's already how it works with the like button. I don't think there would be any more exploitation, just different exploitation, in a generally better system. |

Supported.
The details will have to be worked out, so that the new system is better without creating more room for exploitation (I don't mind there being the same amount of room for, but more would be bad). Also, changing it as little as possible would be nice, any massive changes to how a forum works would make it less intuitive to use, which is bad.
[rant] Oh, thinking of unintuitive changes, why do the new damage bars on the new targeting UI go ANTI-clockwise? Wouldn't it be more intuitive to use the direction of something similar to things we use in real life, like for example.. a clock. [/rant] |

People are dumb and don't like to think.
It's a lot easier to toss a meme at a troll than post a well reasoned response to a considered OP.
It's just the way of the net. Love it or GTFO.

If I wanted eve reddit I'd go to the eve reddit.
The forums are fine as they are.
New layout won't stop terrible threads, the source of terrible threads are terrible players. This one being a prime example. |
