Elite, the classic space trading game, is coming back. Oh yes, that Elite, the original and best.
Or so the original author would like... why not chip in and help, only needs 1.25 million quid.

Just seen the story on BBC News, laughed about his description at the start of the interview about begining with little cash and a small ship and working up the ladder.... Reminds me of another game.

Somehow, and it could be that I've become a massive cynic, but this idea is doomed as soon as the next WoW expansion comes out.
Sorry but been through this too many times and too many times have my hopes being knocked down.
Besides, Eve is a damn good game, the Elite sequel would more likely ape EVE than EVE apes Elite. |

The main motivation for my chioce in trying EVE (before getting hooked ofc) was playing all the Elite Series Games, First Encounters was the epitome for me.
However, the majority of my interests came about from the Fleur de Lys, Anacondas, Pythons and the risk of witch space.
I'm on the fence, I loved and I mean loved Frontiers and First Encounters, even trying First Encounters on a Pentium 75 back in the day and finding that hitting warp to planet just crashed clean into the side of the planet as the processing speed was too high to plot deceleration.
I'm on the fence...... EVE AND Elite:Dangerous? Time limitations............. DAMNIT |

Braben's (also much heralded by the clueless BBC) last project turned out to be vapourware;
He's had 20 years to do something with Elite via his gaming company (235 employees);
He doesn't appear to want to put up -ú1.25m dev costs despite being well able to do that via his company or his personal wealth.
He wants YOU to do that.
This is nothing more than a vanity project and any of you who pony up cash are morons.

I couldn't care if he is the biggest Berkshire hunt on the planet - I would still want to meet him.
If the game turns out to be the biggest Barry White dumped onto the gaming industry, it's no skin off my pea shooter, and would probably only cost me a few ponies to play and then Donald Trump it, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, that is why Star Citizen failed to take off completely....oh wait...
Anyhow, competition will be good for CCP. Otherwise we will get Jita riots all over again when all focus shifts to DUST514 and EVE gets neglected again.

DONE!..
It was trough scanning the net for news of elite that i stumbled across EVE, and not sleeping for two years when i was a teenager says allot about a game...
I will never quit playing EVE i will just begin playing Elite (again) or maybe not, maybe it will suck, don't matter gotta give him credit for trying to launch it...
Some things are just worth fighting for, if that ever could apply to a computer game i couldn't think of any other... |

IF, and that's a very big IF, knowing Braben's past promises, I'll definitely play/subscribe/whatever the game model is.
But as others have posted, why is he Kickstarting this? He's got a reasonably successful game company and probably a healthy personal wealth, so why is he letting US risk the money if he's sure it's going to work.
Maybe if he and Chris Roberts teamed up then at least one of the two ideas will actually make it out of the vaporware box !
But honestly the Elite II intro still sends tingles down my spine !

Elite is still one of my favourite games and an MMO version would be right up my street. My missus thinks of EvE as 'the other woman'. :) |

If it keeps up at this pace it will get funded. I can't believe people are so willing to throw cash at this when there is so little to sell the project.

Braben's Elite 4 was vapourware. I really hope he'll develop an Elite MMO but I have my doubts.
Also, anyone under 25 would never have played Elite. As a brand name, its value dies every year. |

About 25 years too late David, and seriously Kickstarter? how cheap are you?
I would support this If I didnt feel confident that Braben is just flying a kite here and has no plans or ideas for an Elite MMO at all. His "outsider" is also clearly vapourware. If he's not going to finish the Outsider after nearly a decade when will he finish Elite IV? |

If you look behind Braben in the BBC video from about one minute in the new Elite is running on the monitors behind him.
I started playing Eve because it was the closest thing to MMO Elite. Unless Elite is MMO (i.e. no single player game) I probably won't be interested :(
Will still pledge enough for a ticket to the launch party though :) |

Hmm. Oh yes! That's it!! Eve on-line.

Braben is an extremely intelligent man who has built a successful business and kept it going and expanding in a terrible economic climate - the tech industry in the UK get **** access to credit, has no government incentives or subsidies and has to pay better salaries and more tax/contributions than other nations. He's done very well to keep them running and growing year on year.
He's a Cambridge grad, a very well connected individual with going on 25 years experience in the gaming industry and is involved in a great many tech projects nationally. Including the phenomenally successful Raspberry Pi project. Of which he is a founder and trustee.
Frontier: Elite II was written in quarter of a million lines of assembler code and blew everyone away with the first real use of polygon graphics, anywhere, ever. It had the entire milky way procedurally generated and included amazing **** like seamless planetary/space transition. Something even Eve can't do.
Every single Elite title was screwed with by the publishers. Braben is way too savvy to go down that road again. He's been nagged daily for almost 15 years to make Elite IV. He's never committed himself or his business to it. He is being completely sincere when he says Kickstarter offers an amazing way to not only get support for an independent project, but to also guage the level of interest in and the market viability of such a project.
To come on and say 'it has no chance' shows how misinformed you are tbh. This man knows his **** and has spent a lifetime, probably longer than you've been alive, building and delivering profitable games.
The project has already hit -ú350k in 3 days. It will easily meet its target of $2m. Nobody knows better how to design and deliver Elite IV and he is the past master of procedural content and tech + game design. For these reasons, and many more, I pledged my money. I know I won't be disappointed. |

I've also thrown in my -ú300 ...
I spent months and months playing the original Elite on my BBC, Then my Speccy and C64.
I was a day one subscriber to EVE (and have come and gone over the years) and Play the X games massively. Anyone who says EVE doesnt owe a huge debt to Elite obviously has no idea what Elite was (or did in it's time).
Has Eve gone beyond Elite ? Yes and no - Much as I enjoy eve I want a smaller scale version - I want Elite again. It's why I play X now more than EVE.
Will a new Elite suck ? I doubt that. Will it innovate - That's more of a question. Dave B and the boys however are a solid coding team. They say they have learnt from the mistakes of Frontier (and there were far fewer mistakes than amazing coding) have built the underlying network comms already (its only a limited size multiplayer rather than full on MMO - which to me has greater apeal to be honest).
People question why a Kickstarter as Dave b is probbaly a millionaire yadda yadda yadda ... I doubt he is you know ... Plus this way the project has dedicated money rather than risk financially crippling an individual.
I'd really advises all EVE players to kick in a few quid. Whats it gonna hurt ya ? worse case is you loose a couple of quid (you are pay a 10 a month to CCP already - whats say -ú2 ?) Best case - we get an excellent space trading sim. Elite invented the open world to some extent (and I don't know where these P2W comments have come from - its a standard standalone game model not some face book P2W game) ...
Bottom line is that EVE, X Beyond and many other games wouldn't have eisted without the masterpeice that was Elite. It's why i had no issue handing over my cash.
