I'll try to keep it short..
Before EVE I played a WorldWar II flight simulator called IL2 with a group of people that formed a squadron called "Vultures Row". Back then I choose the name High5 as I liked the sound of it and it reminded me of Spitfires over the English Channel somehow.
It would also made me giggle when people would say 'High5, bandits at your high five (o'clock)!' .
To distinguish ourselves from other squadrons and players on the servers we all put _VR_ in front of our names so _VR_High5 was my callsign then.
Then over half the squadron started playing EVE and formed the Vulture's Row Coop. So I thought what he hell, I'll join them there too. So when I had to name my character I did exactly the same thing  , starting with VR as I thought that is what we did in the squad/corp.
The first time I logged on and joined corp chat I saw to my surprise no one else had done that , everyone had 'normal' names. I was the only one with VR in front of mine. Bugger. 
Now I am kinda stuck with it. But thats fine. What is funny to me that people who don't know me call me VR on comms. My corp mates call me High5, they know better . |

I think I had just finished watching Lethal Weapon, so the name Riggs was fresh in my mind
I didn't know if I was going to actually enjoy the game so I was going to use Dropout but it seemed to obvious so i went with Droput (Dro-Put)
My first alt was Ritualiztic Suizide (who i eneded up selling) most game will not let you use Suicide as a name so I had changed my C with a Z and it worked out.

I like to come up with sexy, exotic-sounding names for my female MMO characters. Sometimes I'll consult online lists of baby names and surnames and pick ones that appeal to me, but this time I basically strung together some syllables (I like "S", "sh" and "ah" sounds, obviously).
Did a little fact-checking just now, turns out "Shahirah" is a real-world (Arabic) name that means "famous".
As for the last name, I can't find any definitive translation, though "orga" could mean "organic" and "sana" could mean "healthy"... strung together, I think they sound vaguely Japanese. |

One of my favorite books ever (read: EVER) is The Inferno. Cocytus (k+ì - s-½ - tus) is the name of the Glacier the imprisons Satan. Nandy is the name of Inara's hooker friend in the unaired Firefly ep. Heart of Gold. She likes spaceships and has red hair too.

Back in high school (more than twenty years ago) I made up a character name for a story I was writing: "Danica". Years later I start hearing about people walking around with it (Danica Patrick of course). As for "Kaliinen", Isaac Asimov used the name twice. First in one of the Foundation novels and later in Fantastic Voyage II. My name is a reference to the Foundation character. |

I rolled in a star lance called the "Iron Wolves" back in the mech warrior 2 days they divided thier lance into the bears, wolves and foxs by mech weight, one of my favorite mechs was the nova as it accomidated my laser saw setup all too well, I got to be known as one heck of an ankle biting pilot clipping feet and legs off other mechs.
Since then I've used the call sign for all my science ficiton game settings. |

Normally when I make a character in a RPG game I try to come up with a "realistic" name that is unique and maybe a bit exotic sounding. I just write down tons of ideas on a page and do lots of variations and try to find something that sounds cool but at the same time is not too crazy or weird or hard to say. People on comms seem to have trouble with it so I guess I failed with that last part. OOO NEZ KAH TOOR EEE GAAAALL |
