I would be curious to see how many players have been the target of non-consensual PvP and how it has affected their opinion of Eve.
Did it sour you on the game? Did you accept it and move on? Did you like the game even more? Etc...

That's a philosophycal question, you will have as many answers as there is players in eve (target of pvp or not).
If you are yourself recently victim and looking for a mystical answer, there is none. Like in RL, nobody can give you answers to theses questions except religions which have dogmas written from before writting was discovered...
I would say, like everything else, get over it...
Fear is your enemy, kill it now before it spread to other parts of your life.
I'm very very pessimistic in RL, don't even get me started on the end of the world.

My answers to these questions are no, yes, and no. I don't get emotional about any particular battle, win or lose. What pleases me more is unfolding of a campaign, and being a part of that. Fortinately, I've had the good fortune of only being ganked by somewhat honorable players, as opposed to the sucicide kestrals on the modern 'pirate'.

Yes, yes, and yes. I've been soured on zerospace, I've accepted the fact that I'll probably die every time I go there (or at least lose my ship), and as a result I plan to be able to roam zerospace freely, killing at will, striking fear into the hearts of all who see me.

I got killed really early on, left the game angrily, then came crawling back like everyone else who leaves the game and chose to approach it with a more mature attitude than when I left. Now I love it. "You Griefer!!!" = "You Doodyhead!!!" |

Only problem i forsee in the future is where does eve go when all the real pirates go off to play pirates of the burning sea
Seriously this poll is rather useless, i was once told people have the freedom to do as they wish....
I didn't exactly concent to a torrent of f's and b's on my screen, nor was there a way to block it either... but atleast i got a reason why....
It's pvp, it's eve, it's a golden ticket to do what you wish....

Non-consensual PvP is a huge part of what makes eve great. Stay in a nub corp, and make sure the number in the upper-left hand corner never goes below .5, and you'll be fine ***********************************

Got podded twice in 0.0 at gate trying to travel to help mates. Got ganged by pirates at 0.4 gate and podded. Lost cruiser to pirate BS while minding my own business. Had merc groups declare war on my mining and research corp and I was the first to die. All in the first 3 months. The net result = I met a couple nice mercs and I have been training weapons skills ever since. Die and learn. Its part of the game! ================================================

If you are not looking for a fight, but you are enjoying the fact that you may be attacked at any time and you feel the adrenaline pumping as you avoid your possible enemies, would that make it consentual or not?
A long time ago, before I was a pirate, the corp I was in at the time was attacked by pirates. It was "unconsentual", but at the same time it wasn't really anything we were actually bothered by since we understood and accepted the risks.
A while later we joined the dark side

I went through all 5 stages of grief following one such senseless experience until I finally accepted that I am a different person than my predecessor. Now, with renewed empathy, I pity such assailants for their living suffering and psychological torment. I now seek spiritual enlightenment and my material concerns have shifted though I share many opinions with my predecessor - who was nice enough to leave me a bunch of neat stuff afterall.
Life is something valuable, but only in its fullest state. Thus, though I pragmatically support the development of defensive technology, I also advocate technology and politics which encourages communication even more stongly.

1. No. It made me want to fight back. Which I did and do. The only thing that "soured" me was m0o's blockade of Curse ages ago (like before the CA formed). That didn't sour me on EVE, but it sure soured me on the bist mining we'd been running out of that system :P
2. Depending on the situation. Sometimes I got together a gang to whack the guy/guys. Sometimes I ran like hell to keep my pod in one piece. I certainly didn't quit the game or anything in frustration.
3. No. I can't see how I'd like the game even more cuz I got attacked when I didn't feel like a fight. I must say though that I enjoy the game more than I used to now that PvP is a larger part of my overall game plan. I must say, though, that as an experienced eve-player, I find it's a lot harder to GET a fight than it is to avoid a fight. All I needed to avoid fights when I needed to was a 2nd account, with a noob alt in a shuttle. Suddenly, I was unkillable :P

I think that PVP is what makes the world turn. personally i would rather kill a PVP,er then a inocent industrial ship Players like wan kur, God, and other confederates as them selfs. I think if they love to kill so much why dont they go after real talent, guys that have been in the game for a few years like them selfs Becuase they are all smoke and no fire!! thats why!! they like to take down easy targets becuase they are to simple to try the big guns! I am glad you can do as we do and blow them off thats what eve is all about.

I have been a victum of two non-consensual PVP encounters in my life. The first was when I was but a wee noob, the other fairly recently. Both were my fault and completly avoidable, just I did some dumb things. Did it sour you on the game? The first one no. Actually I loved it, I think its its still in the top 10 moments I have had in eve to this day. The second one, bothered me a fair bit. Not because of a ship loss, but because I screwed up and let it happen. I saw the situation develop, I knew what was going to happen, and did nothing to avoid it.
Did you accept it and move on? First one, yes. It was worth the loss for the ammount of fun I had during the 30 seconds or so of the battle. Said 'grats' in local, and grabbed anouther ship to hunt the guy. The second one I grumbled about for a day, because I was 36 jumps from empire with no insta's, implants, and missed a few good fights. Other then that no, it was a ship loss big deal.
Did you like the game even more? Of course, thats why I joined a PVP corp.

Did it sour you on the game? At the time yeah, bearing in mind that new characters work quite hard to save up for the next tier of ship.
Did you accept it and move on? Yup, I mean it was my own fault. Sitting in a belt in 0.3, innocently asking two HUFF members to help me destroy a Guristas Transport. But you learn and move on.
Did you like the game even more? Well, at the time it ****ed me off no end. But now I've buffed up from that 7st weakling and can now properly defend myself against your average rat in the street.

Originally by: Lt Hole I would be curious to see how many players have been the target of non-consensual PvP and how it has affected their opinion of Eve.
Its an interesting topic however sadly its probably going to be flamed untill it is closed.
Now to my answers: Firstly, yes I have been the victim of non consensual PvP or PK as its real name is, not all that much as Im carefull but its impossible to avoid all such happenings. In the following answers I will only refer to the times I was the victim in empire space as there is no PK in 0.0 space.
Q: Did it sour you on the game? A: The most expensive time did sour me for a day or so but then I make a habit of not playing much when Im angry anyways.
Q: Did you accept it and move on? A: No I quit and never touched anything having anything to do with EvE ever again! But seriously, its only a game, when I listened to EvE-radio I usually payed to have a song play dedicated to the PKers just to anoy them.
Q: Did you like the game even more? Etc... A: No, PvP is a must in a game such as EvE and PK has its role however PK must be kept on a tight leash as there are alot of people playing that dont know when to stop.
What the game needs to open upp for more PVP and reasonable PK is for 0.0 to be opened upp, sadly for the alliances this meens destroying their dominance of 0.0.
In my humble opinion 1.0-0.9 should be safe, 0.8-0.5 should be pure PvE, 0.4-0.3 should allow PK but faction ships should clear out gate campers and hunt any criminals, 0.2-0.0(empire) should work like 0.4-0.3 but the time it would take for factions to respond should be considerably longer and naturally true 0.0 should be lawless but, please please please... get rid of the chokepoints so that people are able to go out there without running a gauntlet.

Pointless topic. And I shall explain why.
The original poster should have realized that he will only get positive answers... I mean, those that are likely to answer "Yes, I've been griefed and now I hate eve, I dont want to play it ever again !!", are no longer playing, Thank God.

I was killed in my first Tristan the second week in the game, because I didn't understand security status yet. I was just about ready to quit the game and probaply would have if it wasn't for another player who helped me get back on my feet. I have rarely ventured into lowsec space since. How it has changed my opinion? Eve is too open for griefers for its own good. It's not so much the problem that you can kill people, more that the consequences are so few that nobody has to ask themselves if they can gain something by killing people. While this atracts the antisocial kind of gamer that probaply has caused his share of canceled accounts and still is allowed to podkill newbies for no reason, it also means that having friends acctually means something in Eve...
Overall oppinion: Non-consentual PvP is great, it brings people who play together closer because it's a more dangerous universe, however, the difference between empire space and lowsec is too extreme. You basicly go from 99% security to the killing fields. Whenever you're killing someone you should ask yourself if that is a smart move or if its going to hurt you in the long run - that is the one thing Eve is missing in my oppinion...

So yes, I'm a victim of non-consentual pvp every time I buy tech II ships, as they are horribly overpriced, just like everyone that ventures in 0.4 or lower can be a victim of non-consentual pvp to.

You might think I'm strange for this, but I don't think I've ever been a victim of non-consensual pvp. Sure, I've been attacked when I wasn't expecting or prepared for it, or taken down with absurdly overwhelming force, but I dunno of that implies lack of consent.
It's all a matter of accepting that you may be attacked anywhere you go, and I live for that rush whether it's attack squads in 0.0 or suicide kestrels in empire. Sometimes you can be the cat, other times you're the mouse whether you choose to be or not.
Every time I fight or run away from a bigger meaner ship I'm happy as can be. I welcome carnage with open arms, win or lose.
I have been a victim of opponents not sharing in my joy of making things go boom, though. That's never fun.
Anyways, in the spirit of your questionnaire:
1) No. I love the fact that I have to improvise and dodge people willing to attack me, or that I can catch opponents with their pants down.
2) Obviously.

My corp had an empire war on at the time but I thought I was away from the "fun" in the part of space I was in. Couple MC pilots purely by chance turn up at the same station im trying to dock at.
Sour the game? Nope whats the point of a perfectly safe game. That would be come sooooooooooooooo boring. My only thought was "Oh dear (swap that for some expletive) what are they doing up here" shortly followed by "Oh well hope my pod survives cos my clone statiion is a long way away "
All part of the fun and i can afford the loss.

I got ganked/podded in OBE in my first MOA by TANK CEO. It was a long time ago maybe August 2003 but yes I was angry, damn angry. It had taken me ages to mine/sell the ore to buy this Moa.
It almost caused me to quit the game as weeks and weeks of work went down the pan. But I had a change of heart, bought a 2nd account and decided to mine with 2 accounts and get rich and buy a bigger ship and kill TANK CEO. I have only seen TANK CEO once since then, as his Battleship swopped down and ripped our small mining party to pieces. One of this days maybe I will have my chance to get even.
I have been killed many times since then by many people but none of hurt as much as the first OBE podding.
But it was almost 2 years ago and I am still here mining and I still look out for Tank CEO when ever I visit a low sec system.

It's all very well whining about PvP, but unless you seek it out the kind using weapons is relatively rare.
On the other hand, almost everywhere I go there are these NPC's who attack me without my consent!
What about stopping this non-consensual PvE? I should be free to go about my business of rescuing Damsels and Silencing Informants without this sort of blatent interference in my gameplay.
And another thing.....

Lost a bunch of ships... mostly BS for some odd reason. Podded once, no big deal. Never podded anyone, cannot say the same for ships :)

the best thing about this thread?
the people who engage in less than consented atack are swarming it to stop the carebears moaning.

the very first thing I did in eve after the tutorial was to fly out to 0.0 with my basic miner and found a nice rock to mine.. flying away when any npc's showed.. I had read here on these forums that 0.0 was where all the good rocks were.
suddenly, a huge ship warped in and nuked me before I could blink, then podded me (without a clone btw) which dropped me back off at the starting station.. I sat there thinking about the battleship that had just blasted me back to the station I was in and I was hooked.. knew I 'needed' one of those.. SO needless to say, I happily nuke newbs I see in 0.0 space now. It is like a rite of passage..
does your ship have a dronebay? If so, sign the petition.. |

I got PvPed. Some evil miner came and killed my roid, whilst I was AFK mining it. I'm very upset.
This has totally destroyed my EVE playing experience, and I'm now nearly bankrupt, as I couldn't mine my quota of veldspar, and now the loan sharks have come calling for the loan I took out for my industrial.
I have 16 children to feed, 4 wives and 1.5 dogs. (Unfortunately poor foo foo has had an unfortunate encounter with a lawn mower, and is now only half the doggie he once was).
Now they will all starve, as the loan sharks have cut my fingers off, and I'm now having to post this by speaking into a microphone. Have you any idea how difficult it is to 'press f1' when you're voice activating your computer?
I am ruined, a pathetic echo of how I once was: The uberest afk miner of all Yulai.
More seriously, PvP is what makes EVE. I have lost ships to pirates, when I wasn't 'ready for it', but I can hardly call that non-consensual, because I was playing EVE, and I was bimbling around a 0.1 system in a caracal.
No, it didn't sour my playing experience. The chance that you might lose a ship if you do stupid things is what makes the game so much more appealing.
Complaining about non-consensual PvP is like saying getting rain is evil because you didn't consent to getting wet, and "OMG nerf raindrops, they're too big!".
(and for those that don't get it, I wasn't serious about the above. I've never mined in Yulai *smirk*)

I've noticed a trend in "PvP" among the non-consensual crowd. While they'll sit at gates and gank industrials they're often the first to run when any opposing firepower shows up. I posted an incharacter RP post last week in the Intergalactic Summit about ganking some pirates back. I included a picture of thier "pirate weapons" recovered from the loot of the destroyed pirate Raven. Among the wreckage were THREE warp core stabilizers.
It seems these so called "PvP" players are nothing of the sort rather they're "PvITvRLH" players. Thats Player vs. Innocent Traveller vs. Run Like Hell" players!
I honestly see no attraction to paying $15 per month to sit at a gate and ganking people who can't even fight back. I mean I've always viewed it as a bit pathetic.
Another thing. These people (gate ganking pirates) claim to be PvP players but given the venom with which they state this is a PvP game you'd think they'd find other PvP players to PvP with. Instead they gank non-PvP players. I guess its some kind of cheap thrill for them but make no mistake it is NOT PvP they are doing. If they were really into PvP they'd find other PvP players out there and have some really killer battles with them rather then sitting at a gate ganking industrials.
Just my opinion.

1. Not at all 2. Absolutely 3. I like the game about the same, "when" I get a chance to play...
I don't understand people who play a game thats advertised as having PvP and then whine about getting killed... It's part of the game. As long as you're careful, getting killed and financially ruined doesn't happen often. If it does, you're doing something very wrong.

I'm a poor carebear who can't afford pvp at this point, so yeah it sours me when my cruiser gets blown up by a pair of battleships when I'm nox mining.
But I still go into 0.0 just to look around, I just use an alt in a Vigil and hope for the best.

Did it sour you on the game? Not Really Did you accept it and move on? Yes Did you like the game even more? Yes, I think the "thrill of the chase" is one of Eve-Online's most endearing features.
Etc... I had a hauler full of cool crap that got blasted a few weeks ago, I flew my pod back to Empire, got a new hauler, more cool crap, and moved along. This wasn't my first time getting blasted, not even close.
I have known since about the third day I joined Eve that the only place that is safe is the inside of a non-conquerable station or logged off.

Originally by: Lt Hole I would be curious to see how many players have been the target of non-consensual PvP and how it has affected their opinion of Eve. Did it sour you on the game? Did you accept it and move on? Did you like the game even more? Etc...
I've had a few run-ins with pirates. Every one of them, including the ones in whivh I blew up, just went to make me think Eve is even more cool than I used to. I'm even tempted to get out into 0.0 and pirate some known hauler routes.

"Have I ever been killed in non-consensual PvP?" Yep.
Many people believe that playing eve is consent since it is a game where PvP exists. I disagree with the following reasoning.
If you do read the promotional literature and most other CCP info on the game you get the idea that there are safe areas and that it's very possible to play without doing PvP.
As any experienced player knows, there is no such thing as a safe place is someone is willing to apply the necessary resources to killing you.
"Did it sour you on the game?" Nope.
PvP is in fact a portion of the game irrespective of the promotional literature. It takes very little time to discover this and anyone who has played the game for more than a few min's should know this.
"Did you accept it and move on?" Certainly.
Once I understood that safety is a very relative thing moving on was simply another part.
"Did you like the game even more?" Actually and perhaps even oddly, Yes I did.
My own tendencies make PvP play rare for me but the understanding that playing with a non-PvP emphasis is all about risk assessment and management made the game more interesting for me. It added an additional level of consideration and the occasional adrenaline rush is it's own reward.
You know you're good when you are,

Been podded 4-5 times now I think. Escaped in pod 2-3 times more? (can't remember) By other players so your answers are No,No & Yes in order.
As a 3 week noob though I mistakenly targeted & fired on a Stargate while fighting a few rats. I got as far as "I'm sor.." [poof!]
Did it sour you on the game? - No
Did you like the game even more? - No
Did you accept it and move on? - No, someday I'm going to get that gate. Just waiting for when it least expects it. |

Well, I was mining with my corp in a belt back in the day, and all of the sudden, 2 guys by the names of swisher and boabus came in and pwned our mining op. I started Eve on March 10th, 2004, but on the day I was attacked in the belt was the day of my true birth. IT changed me into the player I am today (hi mom!)
