I am just curios, why have missiles been omitted from the orbital bombardment ammo? I know guns are more instant but come on every other weapon type is represented.

Actually it's not even that far, it's still closed beta but should be going open sometime this month from what I can tell.
Also drones WHAT ABOUT THE DRONES?!
I'm sure every self respecting Gallentean patriot wants to take a domi to bombard a planet repeatedly with sentries like in Day of Darkness II The Drake is a Lie |

I also agree on the whole fire at will stance. I want to have the ability to randomly fly up to a planet and bomb the hell out of it without some stupid command codes. Why? Because EVE is a sandbox and in a sandbox you would be able to do pretty much any action. If they think they can take my destroyer out with their planet side doomsday beam...go for it!
We don't require some stupid clearance code to engage a player in eve. If there are two parties fighting each other, you can fly up and shoot whoever the hell you want without them giving you permission. Hell you can even shoot both parties. I want that level of freedom with DUST too, as I understand it they can shootback with anti-space weapons. Let's have some good ol orbit-ground wafare instead of just arial assault support. |

Probably something to do with Velocity and distance. No point in firing a volley of missiles to bombard a planet well after the battle has ended and everyone has moved on.
They could have a projected missile though. A triple stage idea, where the first round travels out very quickly, then separates and fires a second stage into atmosphere, which then separates and launches a 3rd stage at the target area in the form of 9 gravity assisted projectiles or something.

I like the idea of just warping in and carpet bombing everything, the enemies PI infrastructure and everything else... if i want to take it intact, i'll send in mercs. Otherwise, it would be much more satisfying to fit a bomblauncher and do the job myself in a SB; Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure. AFK Cloaking? An afk cloaker has never ganked me. It won't be an issue. I doubt CCP will let the two worlds interact on the level that we (capsuleers) want them to, simply because Air Power wins. From orbit we would be able to devastate any DUSTbunnies, and CCP is conveniently leaving out the mechanic of getting the DUSTbunnies to the planet in the first place. Plenty of us (myself included) drool at the REAL possibility of nuking troup carrier ships in orbit or in transit, but that just isn't possible that they'll allow us to do it.
Mechanics will be put/kept in place to prevent us from doing anything we're talking about in this thread. "Blow it all on Quafe and strippers." -á --- Sorlac |

From what I understand, the Dust bunnies do get stuff to shoot back at the ships bombarding them. And I'm guessing that there's a warmup timer.

Yeah but imagine the opposite PL coming in with 20 SC and 50 Dreads and not leaving till the only thing left alive planetside or otherwise is them. The legions of console kids raging would be epic, CCP won't allow this to happen.
There will be interaction and Im sure we can fight between us, but to what extent has to be seen. If they allow us ebil Eve players to decimate the Dust Bunny ranks out of the starting gate it would be bad for their console subscription numbers and their business model would fail.
Don't get me wrong, nothing would make me happier then to nuke a planet full of bunnies till the planet is nothing but a glowing ember. But I don't think thats gonna happen. |

You're saying that we can move faster than the speed of light, lock onto beacons light years distant, have homing missiles able to hit ships that are randomly dodging at several kilometers per second, but we can't hit a football field on the surface of a planet from orbit?
By the end of the Apollo missions, the splashdowns were generally within a kilometer of their target, and that's for something intentionally taking more time in the atmosphere (time=deviation) than would be necessary for a shell because of the whole not wanting to kill the astronauts thing.
And you're saying that we can't lock onto a Football field and fire straight down at it from orbit? With Gravity helping us? This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

Who said I care which side I hit?
I'm not asking to be able to see where the Dusties are on the Map. I'm not asking to be able to see exactly where I'm going to hit on the map. Accurate fire is what a Dust bunny with a Target painter (or whatever) is for.
I'm asking to be able to throw darts at the dartboard that happens to be directly beneath me. (And have the dartboard fire some nice big darts right back at me.)
I'm asking to be able to intrude on someone else's fight. The exact same way I can in any other Lowsec fight in EVE (some of my favorite fights were ones where a third party intruded).
Not allowing third parties to intrude would be the first instance of instancing added to the EVE Universe. That's the gameplay issue. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

It's almost like randomly nuking the planet would kill millions if not billions of civilians who live on that planet. I mean, these are TEMPERATE planets.... i.e. New Earths. It's not that we 'couldn't' technically fire at the planet. It's that the game is not set up to even consider automating mass murder on a planetary scale, so it's prohibited in the base capsule code. It's only now there are Dusties with tactical beacons allowing for pinpoint accuracy that the capsule code has been relaxed allowing us to fire at a beacon. |

I like this rationalisation
The thing that gets me is that there seem to be very few people who realise what this whole project could actually mean. It's always 'what does this do for me now?'
If this works, we will be looking at many more cross platform MMO / MMORPG / MMOFPS etc in the near future. This can only be a good thing as it is another evolution in the genre. Which is what it needs as most games are stagnating due to the money men wanting everything to be the next WoW killer!

If you wanted to balance the drive by effect of having players fly up, bombard, and skip merrily into the sunset without dust bunnies having a chance to defend themselves, you could always apply a timer drawback to the bombardment ammo so that if fired your ship is unable to warp for say 2 minutes? I don't know its an idea. I mean if you commit to nosing your way into a fight, it stands to reason your ship cant leave orbit for set amount of time to allow them a chance to retaliate. |

I imagine this will be pretty much the mechanic used. Possibly with a warmup timer before firing, explained by the ship having to enter a 'low orbit' position before opening fire. Then having to leave orbit before being able to warp away. |

Ballistic Missiles are accurate to the meter or so, and those go through that turbulent atmosphere twice. The Apollo missions reentry was aimed from orbit around the Moon, and generally got within a kilometer (and they hung around in that turbulent atmosphere for a heck of a lot longer than an artillery shell would need to).

They're coming up with "real life" reasons you shouldn't be able to shoot the ground beneath your feet and hit. I'm pointing out that those arguments are flawed.
I've already made my game design argument: Nothing Else in EVE is instanced. DUST should not be either. So you should be free to fire at a DUST map without an invitation. They should be free to fire back effectively if they prepared for that possibility. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

On the other hand, the maximum velocity of a ballistic missile descending from orbit without tearing itself apart is relatively so low that it would take minutes for it to reach the ground. This could be solved by manufacturing missiles with a built-in micro-warp drive, but that would cause the manufacturing price of the missile to sky-rocket, and besides, utilizing a warp drive so close to a planet surface is at best an interesting experiment and at worst catastrophic.
Such a sad day for missiles :( they truly are become a dead weapon. What with recent nerfs and now omission from orbital bombardment? Looks like the favoritism for guns just keeps growing. Guess I'll go change my skills over now before missiles become nothing more than glorified fireworks. |

Nobody's asking for the ability to shoot someone who's game mechanically barred from shooting back (though, from my understanding, that's what Orbital bombardment is). We just want you to hurry up and give prepared Dusties the ability to shoot back really effectively and give us the ability to take potshots at battles in progress (with big guns aka make the Leviathan useful again). This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

Random RP:
"Sergeant why has it gone pitch black" "Don't worry son, the amarr air support has just arrived"
Up in space: Siege mode Deployed, Orbital bombardment lasers locked on target, Fire at will
"Behold , he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him -Book of Revelations- " "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending -Book of Revelations- "
But seriously there is going to be a bunnymail right? complete with a bunny killboard? Awww please? i mean they have gear, we kill them with our orbital bombardments... there has to be killmails! :)

Lasers Hybrids Projectiles
The only one that is being ignored here is missiles and Id like to know why, I mean a missile strike from orbit isn't that insane an idea.
Firing a missile from space makes no sense. Any intelligent race would use rocks with guidance systems, propulsion is pointless when you are already traveling at orbital speeds....

Maybe the ragnarok? Those who cannot adapt become victims of Evolugalbugaslugakjlwsdhvbzxd Click for old school EVE Portraits: http://jadeconstantine.web44.net/Maison.htm |

Make the Leviathon a Railboat like the Naga, and we're all set.
(Semi-Real Suggestion: The Levi needs some love, after all. It can't even do full damage to a Customs Office. Shooting missiles at the ground could be that love.) This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

I would like to see EvE evolving ,but it does not evolve shooting at planets with only getting notifications. i mean ,it is nice to see such an interaction, but it does little for the whole of EvE. How many people are going to shoot at a planet having a reason to do so ? everybody? don,t think so. So lets say 30 % of the playersbase and i say that is way too high. From that 30 % people have to get permission to shoot at a planet to get a notification displayed on your screen. Way to go ,be happy with this ,you all wanted this R.S.I2014

Do EvE players can gank a planet in the near future or do we have to have permission from consolekids forever? R.S.I2014

What happens when I am playing DUST and just give myself (the capsuleer) the permission to nuke the DUST bunnies in my lobby repeatedly? Because I will if it means I can glass some of those cursed snipers. They think they are hot stuff? Wait until i turn them into hot stuff! And by "hot stuff" I mean "molten piles of steaming slag".
