Personally I prefer Ventrilo's sound quality over that of Teamspeak, and it lags alot less generally. I use both in day-to-day activities, but would take Ventrilo over Teamspeak

Used both so far. Seems like TS can handle more ppl but Ventrilo has the way better Sound quality.

Yeah have used both a lot for FPS clans and community's. TS is more hackable, more channels etc but Vent is much clearer. unfortunatley with Vent youneed to pay unless you find a copy of the v.2.1.4 I think it was which was the version before they asked for payment. Last I heard you could download that from the SGN Gaming site. www.teamplayfirst.com www.thanhsa-clan.net |

Teamspeak. Its generally more used, so easier bug fixes, more mods for all kinds of programs/sites, has chatability, easier to use, setup and admin.
Plus side of vent is uhmm... nothing? I think vent is no good.

The eternal question. I've heard people claim TS lags them, others claim vent lags them. Quality is a constant arguement. I think it depends on what codecs you use. Most TS servers only have a couple of default codecs on there, you can install loads.
I vote TS because its free for non-profit use. -- We are the Octavian Vanguard www.octavianvanguard.net http://www.serenitymovie.com |

Ventrilo sounds soooooo much better, ive spoke to peoppple on TS i could hardly understand on ts but i could on vent.
Theres 2 problems with vent:
1) can be harssh for modemers 2) You have to pay if theres more than 2 users, even tho it aint that much people dont liek to pay when they can get it for free

I prefer Vent over TS, purely down to the sound quality.

lol, the sound quality arguement is moot. It all depends on the codecs, not the program. -- We are the Octavian Vanguard www.octavianvanguard.net http://www.serenitymovie.com |

Ventrilo is easier to install, when using a computer without having administrative rights. Furthermore is there a greater probability of ventrilo working when behind company or provider security measures ( firewalls etc.) I use 2 connections, the one at work and one at home. Both is a network behind firewalls(i live at a dorm). Both places I couldnt get TS to work at first (had problems installing at work, but got it to work at home with some software from a friend of mine who is the netadmin there :). Never got it to connect at work.
Ventrilo was easily installed without administrative rights, and did in both cases connect in first try.
I know this probably has something to do with the portsettings on the firewall etc. But nonetheless I had a lot less problems with ventrilo.
I know nada about the capabilities of the 2 programs.
And I know I sohuldnt be on either on work :)

I've always found Vent has better sound quality than TS. On the other hand, it's much easier to get a cheap TS server hosted.
Which codec do people recommend for TS? I've tried a few, but they all seem equally bad so far...

Teamspeak...because I can host a server on my junky old 400mhz with no problems...
But I keep both, because I use whatever the people i'm talking to use.

ts DOES lag you, but it all depends on your computer/connection and the teamspeak servers settings. For instance me and my mate tried to play bf2 and for me it was unplayable until he changed the server settings. Having said that i still prefer teamspeak because i cant be arsed to dl ventrilo

You can't set up a free Vent server for your corp. You can set up a TS one. TS is easier to admin, and dosn't have the ****** up liscencing requirements of Ventrillo. And TS dosn't have issues with some creative sound cards.

right.
LAG is caused by excess bandwidth useage - especially over a slow connection POOR QUALITY is caused by using a low bandwidth codec LAG WITH POOR QUALITY is caused by your PC and/or your connection sucking donkeys for cash.
You need to find a happy balance between bandwidth usage and quality. TS allows you to do this for free, while supporting a large range of codecs. Ventrilo charges for the privilege. I don't care about the money - I've enough to install whatever I like - but I still use TS because I like the functions it provides.

Having used both:
Teamspeak seems to have better sound levelling (very seldom is someone too quiet or too loud unless they're getting huge feedback from their speakers).
Vent has good sound quality and less lag, but the sound levelling is the worst I've encountered. People are half the time too quiet to hear, or suddenly so loud the speakers buzz (which is even worse when 4 people try to talk at once and a feedback loop gets going). Vent would be the way to go if: It gave the *listener* the ability to adjust individual incoming sources on their client side, rather than the sender having to adjust for every listener.
Overall I do like Vent's ability to adjust inbound/outbound sound levels as well as the master sound level.
TS has a better 'comment' ability in the bottom pane rather than appended to user name.
Overall, neither is better than the other, IMO.

Edited by: Maya Rkell on 30/06/2005 23:25:49 Icarus - well, some people have problems with one, some the other.
In the end it comes down to the fact you can run a TS server for your clan for free, and you can't run a Ventrillo clan for your server for free.
Hence TS>Vent
