TeamSpeak, for the following reasons
- Free to host your own server so long as it is non-profit
- Sound quality is identical to Ventrillio. People assume that because TS starts out with a lower quality codec by default (for 56k friendly connections out of the box) that it must be worse. No. Both have huge amounts of codecs to choose from and identical sound quality depending on codecs you use
- Vent breaks almost every programming user-interface rule. Looks like something from the gnome 1.x era and Windows 95 era. Clunky, boring, and not streamlined for the eye. TS has followed UI programming protocols and is thus easer to consume information faster
- I hate the robot voice on vent. Yes, you can turn it off. But what is more annoying then having a robot speak over the rest of the server's conversation, leaving you going "what? what?"
- amazing cross OS support for Linux and Windows. damn near identical preformance and stability

My limited experience of TS was it has an obscure and as yet unfixed bug in that on some installs of XP, after its been installed and you've rebooted, it refuses to load!
Working solution is hybernation (which doesn't work on all PC's..), but far from ideal.
Now testing out Ventrilo..

Ventrilo has a better standard codec - but TeamSpeak can sound better than Ventrilo if you set it up right.
Another thing is TeamSpeak is alot better designed if you have a huge amount of people.

Ventrilo
- Good sound quality simple as that, And you can host your own server and have up to 32 players on the ventrilo without paying, if you use the older version. And there is hardly any difference between the old and the newer version where you can only be 8 people online. |

Seriously. Drop the quality argument. It's been tested time and time again that they have near identical quality settings. Stop basing program capability on default options, and learn to look at program preferneces. A 25.6k streaming quality is a 25.6k streaming quality regardless of how the codec is titled. Both transfer as amazing levels of quality speed, bitrate, and transfer cap so long as you set the correct preferences.
-slaps yet another myth around vent-

This is also, incidently, both illegal and useless for people with SB Live sound cards.

Vent, Easyer to use, Sounds great, unlike teamspeak when i cant tell wtf people are saying 50% of the time. never jerky, the chat doesnt cut off throughout the message.
and just seriously, its 100x easyer to understand someone. teamspeak sounds like your talking through a jet engine.

I'd choose Teamspeak everytime, with good codec's it's got great quality, it's easy to use and easy to admin.
I use Ventrilo sometimes, but only out of necessity, never out of choice.

The interface is outdated and difficult to navigate based on every single coding UI principle known to man. The only time I have someone cut off half way through is if they have their sensitivity set too high. Which, guess what, occurs on both teamspeak and vent.

Yet again, did you read anything about Teamspeak? Or just OMFGWTF!! didn't read the preferences? Most default TS servers run on 12.6k quality, which is horrible but incredibly friendly to dialup, and thus why they do it. It is easily bumped up to at least 25.9k which results in an amazing audio quality equally on par with the 25.9 highest codec in vent.
If TS sounds bad on a server it's because the admin didn't bump up the quality of his server to allow for broadband users and not worry about dial-up users. Learn to read preferneces and notice tiny things like this from now on.

Theres 2 problems with vent:
1) can be harssh for modemers 2) You have to pay if theres more than 2 users, even tho it aint that much people dont liek to pay when they can get it for free
This is so so stupid. EVERY SINGLE CODEC you can use with ventrillo, you can download install and use with TS too. TS is better in a million ways.

I prefer TS but it tends to lag a bit more than ventrilo when you get large numbers of people on it. On our alliance ventrilo server my ping is always around 20 even with 60+ people.
BTW ventrilo is free, google "ventrilo_2.1.3.exe" you should find it.

Vent is crap, it makes everyone sound like bloody robots and I find it's UI is much less intuitive than TS.
It always amazes me that anyone can claim Vent's quality is superior to TS when you all sound like metal mickey on Vent.

Ventrilo is NOT free. Suggesting others to use an outdated version of vent is illegal and unethical. Don't be a **** to the very same people you want to "show your support". Buy it, or go to TS.

Unfortunately, it's near impossible to liscence. Which means than Teamspeak is a far more viable soloution.

Last time I used it Ventrilo had better sound quality and was a lot easier to use. I have been using TS for several months now though. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Ventrilo, easier to use, not purple, doesn't bounce around, user friendlier, not purple.

Unethical, Illegal? What are you smoking?
I'm assuming the people behind ventrilio were all of sound mind when they released that specific version. Coming back on that decision is fine, but you can't unrelease a released piece of software. Since when is it a crime to run older software?
