I'm having a strange thing while flying my ship... The textures on objects are getting crazy (floating, wawing, dancing) objects are missing or getting transparet... don't know how to name it... it is really hard to explain and it is even hard to see on the screens but its really painful in motion... When my ship is stopped everything seems to be fine but whet i start moving the horror begins... I get this thing on every object but its perfectly seen on billborads (4.jpg) and it can be noticed even on sentry guns :( http://www.eve.mpm.net.pl/bledy/1.jpg http://www.eve.mpm.net.pl/bledy/2.jpg http://www.eve.mpm.net.pl/bledy/3.jpg http://www.eve.mpm.net.pl/bledy/4.jpg http://www.eve.mpm.net.pl/bledy/5.jpg http://www.eve.mpm.net.pl/bledy/6.jpg http://www.eve.mpm.net.pl/bledy/7.jpg

That's an effect called "Z-fighting" and I get it too (Radon9700Pro), but not quite as badly as you seem to. It's a common problem in games with huge open spaces. Not sure you can do anything about it though, sorry.

You're not alone. I get similar problems, and I'm running on a GeForce 4800 with the latest drivers.

Radion 8500
I did read somthing about this issue somwhere (general issue, not eve specific) Somthing about the Z buffer being 16-bit and not 24 bit - fix was to force 24bit ?!? Might play later but too busy playing EVE right now :)

With the ATI cards, it seems you can force the Z-buffer into 24 bit mode. The problem is (?) that the game asks for a 32 bit buffer, which the card can't provide (8 bits being allocated elsewhere). The cards then default to 16 bit and has the problem. It should default to 24 bits, but doesn't.
In the ATI drivers, you should be able to force 24 bit mode. Doesn't work for nvidia drivers, as nvidia don't supply this option, so I can't check it myself :-(
If this works, please post a reply here...?

Hi Lu Tze,
Thanks for the info, if I get time I'll try forcing to 24 bit mode tonight. I'll post the results here.

I tried setting the force to 24 bit option but the option is only available for openGL, atleast in the catalst drivers and has no effect on the problem ingame. I believe the game is using Direct 3d not GL. I can change the pixel alignment for d3d which makes it so I don't have to adjust pixel alignment ingame however this screws up the pixel alignment in other games. Anyone find a way to force D3d to 24 bit? Different drivers maybe?

Daemun Khanid is right there's no way that I could find to force 24bit textures in D3D. If anyone out there is technical when it comes to Graphics drivers, please let us know how to do this. Would really appreciate it.

It definetly is the Z-Buffer. Problem is that NVIDIA cards now only go up to 24 bit on the z-buffer and I think the same is true for ATI now (not sure - don't have an ATI card). There is no way to fix this on the NVIDIA card and the option to force 32 bit is no longer available.
I got the same exact thing on my old TI 4200 and now with my 5900 Ultra. Nothing can be done about it unless the game will allow you to choose 24 bit buffering.

Try stepping up the antialiasing setting, that sometimes helps the Z-buffer clipping.

Sorry, no joy there either. I always run with the highest AA and all other quality settings. I actually tried almost every setting available withing my display options, no luck yet. CCP are you there? Any official responce on this at all? Seems like alot of people are bothered by it for it to be ignored.

i searched for the radeon issue and found this:
http://www.rage3d.com/radeon/reg/index2.shtml
there are two things you want to check out or experiment with:
-DisableHyperZ -ExportWBuffer
MAYBE someone could try to switch OFF the HyperZ feature which seems to compress the Z buffer. If this does not help try diffrent settings with WBuffer and HyperZ. Please post here if it helps.

:( Tried it and no luck. I was unable to use the exact page you posted a link to because it did not mention how to edit those reg entries in XP. However I was able to find a tweak/overclocck utility that gave me point an click access to all the the advanced functions including enabling 32 bit Z-buffer. Nothing worked. I tried every option available in the registry and though I did get some effects on the rendering I could not fix the shimmering/shifting textures. I also downloaded the newest catalyst drivers that came out today, 3.6 and they made no difference. I'm about to try omega drivers and see if I get any improvement. Sorry all, no luck so far. Also I was curious, does everyone experience this or just the users of certain video cards?

Actually no. As I SAID, the XP registry entries are different than the entries which were explained on the web site posted. The entries described on said website did NOT exist in the XP registry. The website itself say's the XP is completely different and due to how much more complicated it is the author will not go into performing the tweaks in Windows XP. Do you need an english tutor? :)

Hope you didn't take my comment to seriously :), thanx for the info about the Z-buffer. Sounds like it's atleast a step in the right direction. BTW, I'm using the Omega drivers now (Ati 9700 pro) with no real changes. The omega drivers do seem to improve the frame rates alittle though for anyone interested.

LOL, yea. Tried the Cat 3.6 drivers yesterday. I moved on to the Omega drivers after they didn't do any good. At this point I'm assuming it's something that has to be solved by CCP and I'm awaiting a responce from them about it.

Daemun Khanid have you raised a petition about it. If so let me know what you put and I'll stick one on too... the more numbers they have the more chance there is they'll look into it.

Yes, I have sent in a petition. Actually I sent it in about 2 days ago. I just described the texture problem and included my system specs. Still waiting on a responce. The website where I got the tweak utility for radeon cards is " WWW.rage3d.com " The tweak is really easy to find, there's a button for it at the top of the page and I believe it works for quite a few different Ati cards. It also includes overclocking functions but I didn't really mess with that. Things are fast enough as is. Don't anyone go using it and melting their system then blaming me for pointing you in the tweaker's direction. :)

Well, I got a reply back from ccp about the textures. They say they haven't heard of it before and to try the catalyst 2.5 drivers that they ussually work best. I admit this seems odd since the drivers are already up to 3.6 I don't really see how this problem could have developed with the card since then. I'll give it a shot since they suggested it. I admit I am quite disappointed that they said they hadn't even heard of it before. I've seen people post about it here numerous times. Of all the forum boards they read you'd think would be one of them. Perhaps someone would like to point that out to them if they decide to send in another petition about this. :)

I've heard of games requiring you to update to the latest display drivers to work, but downgrading them 5 versions to work is just plain ridiculous!!! If I were to do that most of my other games would run with old bugs... sorry that's not an option. :(
Did you get anywhere with the Cat 2.5 drivers btw?

Edited by: Gavilan on 22/07/2003 12:31:20 I posted a bug report on this a couple of days back, still no word back. One thing I did find is that when I took a screen shot of the problem it didn't show the problem. The screenshot looked perfect. Makes explaining the problem all the more difficult.
