Requiring boosters be on grid is one of the most player upvoted proposals on the csm's assembly hall.
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=10444
Yet it seems it didn't get much attention from the csm meeting:
"Seleene brought up the topic of off-grid boosting, and Fozzie responded that technical limitations were the only reason it continued to exist. Fozzie could not comment on when this issue would be resolved and stated that GÇ£one day Veritas will come up to me and say GÇÿhey I fixed off-grid boostingGÇÖGÇ¥, but he had no idea on a potential timeframe for this sort of miracle."
And that seems all that was said about it. (If this was then addressed somewhere else in the minutes please feel free to let me know.) http://community.eveonline.com/council/transcripts/2012/CSM_CCP_Meetings_December_2012.pdf
"Technical limitations" so getting this fixed is like hoping on a miracle??
Is Veritas actually assigned to fix this, or is this something he may, or may not do, in his spare time?
Can we get some sort of description of the technical limitation?
Can the technical limitation be avoided by doing something other than requiring them to be on grid say only give boosts up to fleet members in an area of effect?
Some sort of follow up would be appreciated.

CCP have already stated on several occasions that OGB is going away - they dislike the mechanic. Also, the tech 3 cruisers are going to stop being the over powered boost machines they are now when the revamp of command ships goes through this year. So whether you agree with the idea or don't, it's happening.

I totally agree with the nerfing of the boosts, theyre SO overpowered thats why people choose them over the command ship.
What CCP have to remember is the cost effectiveness, are u going to just counter this lack of use of command ships, by turning it on it's head and making t3s unusable, for the same cost.
Removing offgrid boosters is a bad move, and will surely mean that they have to give some boost back to Solo/Small-Gang PvPers, otherwise they've just totally nerfed that mechanic even more, and EVE becomes much, much less of a "sandbox". -Buhh |

Past revisions over the last four years that I've been playing would seem to indicate that expecting this kind of reciprocity for the Solo/SG player is akin to expecting the second coming of Christ. You can hope for it all you like, but don't hold your breath.

I guess that's because really, CCP are a business, and will go with the masses to create the most profit. It's a shame to wave goodbye to such an adrenaline pumping, exciting game, and welcome this "Not-so-sandbox" they're slowly creating.
And yeah, CCP have only boosted solo in 3 ways the last few years. 1. Tech 3 Cruiser Boosts 2. Ancilliary Shield Boosters 3. Making blasters good again.
For that i'm thankful, however, for what we're about to recieve, I am not. |

Boosts are killing solo pvp. If you are using a booster alt you are not solo anymore than if you use a logistics alt or a falcon alt. (at least those need to be on grid.)

I have command ships trained to V.
I support the change to nerfing OGB. This however MUST lead to two options:
1) A significant increase in the durability of Boosting ships (not likely going to happen as it creates imbalance elsewhere)
2) A tenfold increase in the effectiveness of boosts while I remain on-grid, going back to EVE's famous trailers this would support a style of gameplay demonstrated, When a command ship enters the field the enemy FC screams "KILL THAT COMMAND SHIP" and while the command pilot realizes he is doomed he remains steadfast for every second he stays on the field he holds significant sway over the flow of conflict. You will be primaried... but your time on the battlefield will be legend.
Also in order to make option 2 an actual power-play he must be unable to receive reps while boosting, he can still run and self-rep but if this caveat is not added we will have 8 Archons repping a damnation =P

Exactly this.
At the moment you very rarely see "Fkin blobbers" or anything like that in local (You do, but theyre just scrubs).
EVE is supposed to be fun, unfortunately now, people are so risk averse that they only fight in huge numbers, OGB allow you to do things like this: http://cyn0.syn-dot.com/index.php/kill_related/12833/ (Please allow the KB link it's to prove a point).
Without the tengu boost, we would've ALL died, and without the loki we couldn't of caught anything. Tell me how that is going to IMPROVE this game? So now blobs can dominate you with a push of a button? At this moment, blobs have to think about what they're going to do tactically, and not underestimate their opponent, after the OGB nerf, its instadeath |

I don't believe its technically possible for CCP to prevent OGB. Prevent boosting from a POS yes, but not applying the boosts to one grid in a system.
I think the changes to boosts will help a little but the bottom line is T3s are still overpowered as they require max skills to probe down. I think that'll have to be the next change - increase their sig radius when they're pushing boosts - to ensure that the T3 pilot is actually at the keyboard.
I'm not holding my breath, frankly CCP take a ridiculous amount of time to deal with problems like this and always have. |

Command ship sitting by itself "on grid", rest of fleet fighting at a gate. That's OGB in a nutshell. Get some coffee

We can agree to disagree on this. I used to be able to roam around solo and alts wouldn't ruin a substantial number of fights. Occassionally you would get the guy who brings in the falcon alt at the last minute or logistics alt etc. But you knew who these guys were - well because those ships needed to be on grid.
Now in pretty much every populated system you should expect your target to have an alt giving him a substantial advantage.

OGB is even more likely to occur when the blob is in a system than it is when a small gang is in a system. People forget that the same mechanics work for everybody, and are usually more effective the more people you have. So the theory that OGB is the only thing keeping small gang combat alive is a complete myth.
People also tend to forget that a grid is a fairly large chunk of area, and the requirement to be on grid leaves a ton of wiggle room for a T3 set up for speed tanking.
But lets continue to overlook the obvious, it's entertaining. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. Fleets can't all always be on the same grid at the same time. If I'm part of a small gang chasing potential targets around the interceptors are going to need the benefit of skirmish gang links, but because they have different warp speeds there's two options here, neither of which are attractive at all: either the interceptor warps after the target alone and loses the fleet bonus, or it warps along with the boosting ship - while that ensures the interceptor will have the skirmish bonuses when they land, you're cutting the ceptor down to less than a quarter of its original warp speed and so chances are you won't be able to catch up with a target that's warped off ahead of you. There are other problems with forcing links to be on field including the fact that the only way to get the best industrial bonuses is to use a several billion isk ship that's completely immobile and defenseless for five minute blocks of time - forcing the bonuses to be on grid won't bring the ship on grid, it will simply mean that the only reason anyone will ever use the industrial core is for compression jobs. There are ways to solve the problem of invincible OGB ships - forcing all of them to be on grid is not one of the more comprehensive solutions.
In addition there's the issue of "on-grid" not necessarily meaning "at risk". I can park my boosting ship 300km from the gang and nobody will be able to touch it. Malcanis for CSM 8 Phrases like "you can't nerf / buff X EVE is a Sandbox" have the same amount of meaning as "If this is a sack of potatoes then you can not carrot." - Alara IonStorm |

So, the technical difficulty is to attach the fleet bonus mechanic to only those on the same grid as the bonus ship or are you aiming to apply it to all ships on the overview, in fleet?
I know you can be 10km away from someone, but they are on a different grid, so imagine the whining about bonus dropping when the grid gets messed up in a big fight lol.
I love the concept, I shudder at the implementation and fear the solution if you don't let the dev try new things out.
