Natsett Amuinn wrote:From what I've heard, from people who have access to Serenity, the server is throttled. More subscribers may not mean a higher PCU, because the server may not allow for more. That would be part of an explanation, if true, but the active population on SR has gone down if you look at the graphs. That's why I'm talking about a drastic change in player behaviour (which would be even more drastic if it's actually throttled): a 50% increase in players (from the last time we tried to guess this) have led to a 20% decrease in activity. That would mean players have responded to more people GÇö i.e. more world content GÇö by halving their active play time.
Quote:Do we have a chart for TQ's server activity from the month of december to now? You can just look at EVEOffline, or compare the 2012 and the the 2013 numbers I've collected if you want something with all the noise filtered out.
For a quick reference, compare the Friday (blue) and Sunday (red) lines before and after Retribution. Before, Sundays GÇö consistently the highest-populated day of the week GÇö struggled somewhere between 45k and 50k. Afterwards, Fridays GÇö normally the least-populated day of the week GÇö do the same, but much closer to the 50k line. That's a consistent ~20% increase right there. If this has spilled over into (re)activated accounts, that would mean an increase from 350k:ish to 420k:ish (again, assuming the normal player behaviour that has pretty consistently made PCUs and subs covariate for as long back as I have seen official numbers). Vote Malcanis for CSM8. |

Anecdote: My corp has seen a recent surge in activity - both from 'active'* members, and re-subs.
Long stretch from one small-ish corp to all of EVE, but the timing coincide nicely.
*Active in that they had a current sub, albeit hadn't logged in recently. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

well ofcourse, the huge spike is due to serenity being F2P for a while and now that it switched back to subscriptions its expected that it drops (just the question where it stops) |

Hm, there are maybe 400,000 subscriptions to TQ, and the typical peak these days is 60,000 logged in at one time. close to 1 in 7. I wonder what would happen to the servers if everyone was logged in at the same time..... 7 times as much traffic...... http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

... erm, no.
~50-55k is the PEAK players online... that's a different subset of people at any given time of day. I suspect weekdays they would see something like 150-200k unique accounts log in daily, with something like up to 400k unique accounts over a weekend where the more casual (ie 1 day a week) players can show up.
EDIT: I saw this one early in the thread.... now that I've gone further I just have to throw my hands up. 55k is the peak concurrency, not total users logging in over a 24 hour period.

Yes it includes China but damn.
its called time zones... shesh... not everyone plays 23/7 I wont waste my time explaining why that's an illogical argument. Let's just wait for CCP to release the figures...which they won't do. I'd also like to know the percentage of those accounts that are alts. Should be easy as I recall they do ask for our address when we sign up.
Just to be clear, subs has nothing to do with the number of people logged in. You can be a bitter vet and have a subbed account and only ever log in to change skill training when you need to or to blap a cap ship with your titan. Or you could only be able to play on weekends, or one day a week, or once a month or hell once a year. But a subbed account is an active paid account so it's not that hard to believe they have 500k active accounts. |

It really does not matter how many people are actually playing the game after a certain number. Has anyone ever thought to themselves that they are not meeting or seeing enough people in EVE? If there were 10.5 BILLION actual players and online at the same time...you would only know or conversate with a very small percentage of those individuals. SORT OF LIKE REAL LIFE. |

The pork is in the January data, from 14k-ish to less than 8k-ish weekly average PCU.
Reading The Mittani's insights to the Chinese server, I wonder wether it's a place anyone would stay subbed for long, even if that someone is a Chinese player. The main activity in Serenity appears to be nullsec NPC grinding to feed RMT for cartel leaders (sellers) and powerplayers (buyers). The RMT guys, nicknamed the "KFC" because they held a meeting in a Kentucky Fried Chicken and paid with their RMT profits, the KFC, say, they agreed to split nullsec and don't war each other, and new players are recruited upon arrival and then they don't switch loyalties for cultural reasons.
So essentially in Serenity you're bound to learn to grind NPCs to pay for the KFC's fun. The whole RMT business is paid upon by freaks who buy titans in their spare time, and with the current PCU trend it's easy to foresee that a point will come when Serenity returns to the business model it had in the old times: massive bot mining and harrassment of anyone not grinding nullsec NPCs. Back then, every week, nullsec alliances would launch the "harvest" and kill everyone not in a nullsec alliance to force "loners" into submission...
But then, having ways so any player can play EVE in China and he can't be harrassed into submission to the RMT cartels would not be a WiSe move... EVE is Serious Business: You shall not feel entitled to being allowed to play EVE just because you are paying it. |

An alt is a paying account, thus exactly as good as another customer.
Keeping track of different people paying for the game instead of active accounts makes no sense.
Also, there are people (like me) who only have one account. |

Well actually keeping track as closely as possible of how many individual people are playing (as opposed to just how many accounts) has value for other reasons.
CCP recently spoke about working hard to impliment better metrics in this area (CSM notes I believe).
However, you are quite correct, in this case it is not pertinent. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

Hope they spend their extra $$$ on some really cool ****. coming with the summer expansion. I mean -the next big thing- not only cosmetics and "thingies" like duelling systems, UI tweaks and balance ship bonus and slot numbers back and forth. (not saying balancing is not important though).
CCP buy epicness. buy people with epic ideas with your money, then people with epic skills to create epic visuals, audio and game mechanics. eve is already epic, but it can be even more epic imho.
..did i mention i like epic?
