Highway nerf is only half of the problem. MMOGs are moving toward getting people around all over the gameworld as fast as possible, but CCP seeems to love transit, mining and other AFK-oriented stuff. Blah.
Player teleportation would help a lot, as would some sort of 'autopilot mode' where your ship travels and returns fire per NPC rules while offline. _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

I'm wondering why people dont get what CCP are doing - it's called 'regionalisation'. They are trying to get poeple to co-operate together and by forcing travel times to be longer this is begining to happen. There are regional markets beginging to open up I'm seeing more 'regular' vistiors in the area in which we live as an example, and we are gaining a few more sales from an area of space that was ,before CWE, a dead zone.
Including the map changes there are more routes to take to get somewhere and tbh it doesn't take overly long. The only thing that appears to have been 'affected' are the trade routes - but why should someone get a few mill in profit for only a couple of jumps.
IMO - Space and the EVE universe is huge, and therefore shouldn't take 12 jumps to cross form north to south and east to west. EVE - is not an 'Instant Gratification' game you want that play CS, or go play the grind that is WoW.
By all means flame away - but hey I have a right to my opinion like others in this thread. --------------------------------- No Slugs were harmed in the creation of this signature --------------------------------- |

While other games are moving towards the insta-port travel option, I like that Eve makes us travel long distances to objectives. It adds something I like to call "size" to the universe.
It makes things more interesting when you travel a long way to get to a destination. You feel like you've actually accomplished something by making the effort to travel all that way to get there. I would say something impressive here about the size of the universe, but Mr. Adams has already summed it up pretty well.
Travel in Eve actually means something. If we could get anywhere we wanted in a few seconds or minutes, it would greatly lessen this wonderful game. Here, territory actually means something. In other games, you can't really say the same thing. So why ruin one of the things that separates Eve from all the other MMOGs out there?
And if anyone questions my experience or motives, I live in the southern end of Feythabolis. I don't think there are many other systems in the game that are as far from the center of empire, let alone farther than that. So I know what it's like to do long runs all by myself, without AP.

If a lot of regions didnt totally suck, I might agree. But, for example, my HQ is in caldari space. If I want to go try out a BC in a complex, I need to go to gallente or amarr (maybe minnie too, but not sure) to find a plex that will fit it. If I want to mine for some isogen, same deal even most caldari lowsec areas are massively mined out.
OTOH if I lived in gallente space and wanted to try my rig against an NPC that doesnt blasterize, I have to go elsewhere. _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Edited by: VossKarr on 10/08/2005 07:45:18 It's not that the travel is too long in Eve, it's just that there this myriad of stargates you have to a pass trough to get there. Too many annoying start-stop cycles for my taste.
I would love it, if there were a bit more fluidity to travel in Eve. Dunno, maybe all the stargates along your path ought to shoot you continuously to your destination without stopping at every solar system (unless something disrupts that ). I'm even willing to sacrifice as much time as before, but without gating at every freaking system on my way.

Edited by: Zaldiri on 10/08/2005 08:22:34 Bah increased travel was a good thing. It gives corps with organisation and a bit of forethought an advantage. At the moment most of the members of my corp have little or no need to travel further than about 5 jumps from our HQ. You realy dont need to be traveling 30 jumps regually.
Yes a lot of MMOs have insta travel systems. On the other hand a lot of MMOs have XP grind based skill systems. EVE dosen't have to conform to what makes other MMOs work. Thats what makes eve special.

Travel time is slower. However, you're working on the assumption that you _have_ to travel. You don't.
There are things that are unavailable in certain regions. The reason for this is they _used_ to be too close to a hub, so everyone went there instead.
Now regional markets are picking up again, as traders are realising that there's a vast profit to be made transporting across regions. Or by being the guy making caldari ships/fittings in amarrian space.
Minerals, with highways, used to be a consistent price. Now they're starting to regionalise, with isogen being more expensive in caldari space, due to reduced supply. The creates a price differential, and gives someone an incentive to ship it.
And with a freighter, they're able to do so.
Not everyone likes hauling. Not everyone likes mining. Not everyone likes combat. But some do, and will see the profit margin. And now they can do so with bulk cargo transport.

In your moaning post, you've just demonstrated exactly why higher travel time is so good. Not every region in Eve is the same. As you state, isogen is quite rare as you can only mine it in lowsec. It didn't used to matter, as you could do a two jump trip from New Caldari to Amarr and you had all the isogen you'd ever want. The ring of systems around Yulai added a few more jumps to the equation, but not really enough to lower isogen prices in Caldari space. Now it's a huge distance between the Caldari and Amarr systems and the isogen prices have risen quite a bit in Caldari space. Now traders can buy isogen cheaply in Amarr space and haul it over to Caldari space for nice profits. Instant player created trade-routes.
Why should everything cool be within 3 or 4 jumps of wherever you choose to call home in Eve anyway? Very few regions "totally suck", each has something that makes it a little bit more special than other regions. What did "totally suck" was that no matter where you used to travel in Eve, everything was around the same price and if you really wanted to do some shopping, the only serious place worth going was Yulai.
I think that removing the highways has been one of the best things to ever happen to this game.

Yesterday I was looking for new agents to work with. I were in Dabrid wich is about 7 jumps away from Amarr. Found a station with 2 lvl 3 ql 20 and 4 lvl 4 ql 20 agents. Only problem it was 28 jumps away form Amarr. The horror of traveling so far.
As I got a new ship in Yulai it had gone like 40 minutes til I was ready to travel after departing from Dabrid. I discovered I had Instajumps all the way down to the station so the trip through low sec system didnt turn out to become a nightmare anyway. And all in all I just spent 1 hour 20 minutes traveling, setting up my ship and locating a nice agent system.
Travel in EVE is good now. Before NWO it was kind of boring, you could be everywhere any day. Now it might take you a few days to bother to go to another region.

To quote Douglas Adams - "Space is BIG, I mean really BIG"....
To be able to just instantly jump to any point in the galaxy from any other would completely destroy this feeling which IMHO is well presented in EVE.
For example when your 40 jumps away from empire you only have access to what you brought with you, can build on site, or is on the usually limited local market. This means you have to plan such expeditions properly and once your there if you forgot something then its a long trip for someone..... Making it possible to just jump right out there would completely destroy this aspect of the game (as well as having rather severe implications for anyone trying to defend an area of space).....

In order to really regionalize the market, they'd have to make it so you would have to go through lowsec to get to another empire/state/federation/republic (choose your preferred designation ).
Right now, moving from amarr space to minmatar space means nothing more than some time invested (most likely afk time too). Putting lowsec between them, would mean better opportunities for traders with guts, more variation in prices, better opportunities for builders and it would make more sense from an RP pov.
Basically, the longer/more dangerous travel becomes in EvE, the easier it gets to use that to your advantage. Whether you're a builder, trader, miner or pirate, it would give you a better chance of making more money. All you'd need to do is figure out how.

Am I right or am I wrong but I thought Eve was a 'Space' game? If I recall rightly the return of the space shuttle yesterday from orbit to touch down took over an hour to complete....and they were only a few hundred miles high.Imagine if it took us that long to dock?
Ok its impossible to compare real world to the game world as there are just too many issues to deal with. Travel times in Eve will never suit some people be they too short or to long. What is the point in being able to go from one end of map to other in 5 mins/5 hours...Just imagine what that will do to the markets and the affect it would have on the game.
Im sure most people adapt to the way it works and I know from personal experience that once anything more than 5 jumps was a long way. Now I dont blink an eye at 30/40 jump round trips and have been known to do in excess of 100 jumps in an evening when its been reqd.
Originally by: Unknown Subject Fix it yourself. Can we say "insta jump"?
Regarding these...again its up to the individual how they want to play the game. One thing I will say about them though is that wherever I see an argument against them its usually filled with people whining about not being able to catch people etc etc 'yawn' . Then lo and behold I see the exact same people who were complaining about them one minute using them ingame the next. Get real guys...if you dont like them why use them? ...and then whine about them??

Spot on with this..couldnt agree more. and why even start the topic without contributing more than half a dozen words?
If the OP does ever read this again....read this little story and see what you think ...will it change your opinions?..I hope so
Im in a 2 man corp. Ive done the bigger corp thing and loved every bit of it but sometimes its nice to take time out which is what I did. I decided I would try something different and with CCP seeming to encourage players into 0.0 I thought id get involved.
Eventually i got involved in hauling some gear into 0.0...And Im not talking just in 0.0 im talking 40+ jumps in. Obviously a lot of logistics reqd for this. Now eventually your going to attract attention to yourself and sure enough this happened. There I am happily travelling through when all of a sudden I find the system being locked down. Im flying an elite indy and have a covert pilot scouting ahead. For various reasons Im obviously not welcome.. What was a 3/4 hr trip for me suddenly turned into a long night .
Everyone who has jumped into 0.0 at some point knows what a gate camp is like. Now Imagine that times 10..... Two ships that have no fighting abilitys or able to escape a good crew at each gate you come too. I will leave out the finer points but 6 hrs later I reached where I wanted to be. Of course I have to get back then and these guys know it too.. 7 more hours later and with outside help from one very good friend I managed to get home safely.
Ok to the OP this scenario is possibly a living hell but its possibly the most fun ive had in ages and loved every bit of it. Ok I could have logged and came on later but where is the fun in that?
Hats off to the guys who were trying to stop me as they were very well organised and I cant knock them for trying...great example of what real teamwork can do and I was impressed.
Ok I might get slated by some people for not letting them catch me but thats my choice...I worked hard for what I got and why should I throw it away? Each to there own I say ! And I play it my way..not how they want it to suit them.
Oh and better luck next time guys..

I disagree with the OP
Traveling 25 jumps from empire to 0.0 should be long. Eve is a large universe and now feels like its a large universe.
Traveling 25 jumps anywhere should be long.
This sort of thing encourages the growth of local communities as well, as well as stimulating local markets.
Yup I disagree completly with the OP There is nothing to be fixed....well maybe instas

the broblem is that traveling in eve is very very boring, there aint much difference, specialy if you travel thrue empire space, I would say EvE is bit 2 big for the ammount of players playing this game, one of the solutions would be atleast make so you can set your propolution module to activate by itssleft when you are traveling afk on AP..

You dont have to travel about..I personally spent many weeks..months even within half a dozen jumps of my HQ. Why do you want to travel? Are you trading...hunting enemies? Please elaborate....its like saying rats are too hard when you are using the wrong ammo/set ups.
If you dont like travelling then dont...pick a occupation that suits you. In my opinion travelling afk detracts from the point of the game...why bother? The fact is that this is a game, not a simulation of reality. If I wanted to contemplate the vastness of the universe I could just turn off my computer, go to my car, and drive on the interstate highway for a few hours. Gee whiz, fun, huh? Well, that is actually not that different from the typical EVE player experience.
This is the first game I have ever played where I set up my a second computer so I could do something else while the game was running. LOL. Sometimes I watch a movie or lay in bed and read a book. Doesn't that seem a bit strange?
Why is it that no other games have this problem, even games that require a lot of travel. Take for instance GTA San Andreas, a game I play a lot more than EVE lately. A major part of the game is travel. You can actually skip the travel if you failed a mission, but I usually don't because it is just fun to drive around. Why? Because you can actually do stuff and not just sit there watching yourself slowly moving about. I'm not saying that EVE should mimic GTA (heh), but that is just an example that shows that travel doesn't have to be boring.
The very fact that "instajumps" even exist tells you that there is a serious flaw in the movement design of this game. Please tell me what is fun about going 12k past gates to make bookmarks. That sounds like work to me, not fun!
Don't tell me about realism or "space is big." This game has no realism at all. It is just a game, not reality. The point is to have fun. Travel isn't fun. Therefore travel should be removed or fixed. Take a look at classic multiplayer space games like Trade Wars to learn how you can have fast travel without unbalancing the game.

Noone brought in the POS aspect!
I do a 60 jump circuit daily at about 150m/s in my hauler trying to sell my goods. If on the off chance I find a contract through a trade channel, I rush 20-30 jumps to fill it and am HAPPY to have finally sold goods.
But the travel time for me is just obscene... :(
I spend over 8 hours a day in autopilot, and even then I am selling only half of what I produce. And I cant exactly half production as I am only running a single reaction.

If you dont like travelling then dont...pick a occupation that suits you. In my opinion travelling afk detracts from the point of the game...why bother?
Why travel -
Agents don't come to you, you have to goto them. Since eve punish's you for turning down missions you can end up accepting some which royaly fubar other factions, that requires travel to fix. ( 30+ jumps to fix minmitar faction )
Yulai is STILL the place to go to buy escrow items. 25+ jumps.
Low security base - 23 jumps ( okie, about 9 of these are low sec so you at least get to watch local, map, etc and do something while moving )
Prices - yeah, regionalization and all that utter BS, that just means some asswipe is trying to rip people off by selling something for 2x its value because they moved it 5 jumps. Unless yer really loaded ( cash or booze ) and don't give a crap you have to travel MORE to find affordable deals.
keep in mind, ALL THIS TRAVEL IS WASTED TIME, that contributes NOTHING to the enjoyment of the game. All it does is increase the frustration level and make you want to hit the "I QUIT" button.
As to why you'd travel afk, umm, maybe cause its complete and utter boredom level is exceeded only slightly by that of watching grass grow?

Yes travel sucks .For those who say its essential to Eve as space game well i say think again.Approaching gate isnt fun .No it isnt even with the beautiful Eve images.
Have you ever played other space sims? OF old Privateer,Darkening,Wing commander serie, recent freelancer .The travel time in those game is optimal.Traveling isnt fun nomatter what you say, the fun are activities you choose , for me its mostly combat.
Imho its not even travel time maybe but the fact that 90 % of this travel nothing happens.
In space sims previosly listed during 10 minutes of travellign something alwys happend. You got jumped by enemies or traveled to a aseteroid field ... I think however that servers of today wouldnt handel non-stop action so this travel time are neccerry evil. However would love shortening them at least abit.

Traveling is by far the worst part of the game for me. Wish it could be reduced as I like to try things out all over the place.

Your right. They should increase it further. I want it to feel like real space just get rid of warping all together. then just have it so we fly around each system. It should take days to fly from one side of a system to another. The game should have nothing to do with much besides travel we should spend all our free time traveling. In fact look what the additional time of travel has done for me. I get sooooo much more time to post drivel on the forums and since I smoke outside I get to smoke 10 times what I used to. I love it!! Infact give me a bit more travel and heck I can just take a screen shot of my game post it on my desk top and save myself $10 a month.

The 15km warp in used to be 20km so it's faster now, also there used to be FAR fewer routes before the "super highways" entered the game, the drastically reduced the size of EVE, now a few of them have been removed and other routes have been added. In comparison to release it's still a LOT smaller.

Mine in a system <0.8 and you get NPCs at the belt.
Travel in <0.8 and you get NPC rats at the gates.

A lot of the old empire core to 0.0 core system routes are now much shorter. from Yulai to YZ (fountain alliance core system) used to be some 50-70 jumps. Now you can get there in about 30, by 2 different routes depending on mood and hostiles.
I can get anywhere in EVE that I need to in 30 jumps or less. I might go 35...but not much more.
Within 35 jumps, I have: Caldari regions, all 3. Gallente regions, all of them, except maybe Solitude. Outer Ring Cloud Ring Pure Blind Tribute FOUNATAIN
I think I even managed to get to Delve and Querious within 35 jumps.
Sure beats the 8-12 around empire and then whopping 50-80 jumyp trips to 0.0. Nice bit of time balancing there. The highways aren't gone, they were simply moved into 0.0.

I have only been testing this game for three days now and it's without any doubt that I have only little experience to judge it by so I'll just sum some regards to distance up here:
Upsides: - Long traveltimes is a contradiction to the the systems implemented by the bulk of other mmorpgs. - Space is vast, the sense of vastness can only be created by long travelling times. - Long travelling times and travelling from gate to gate would suggest that the player has to choose a route, go dangerously through 0.0 sectors or take the long route around. - Use of stargates would encourage traps being laid at the entrances and exits of systems by pirates.
Downsides: - After having plotted a course, there is precious little else to do then wait untill you arrive. There is a lack of interruptions along the way, creating a period in which the player has nothing to do ingame. - No use or less use of stargates would be more interesting, use larger areas with as main travelform a slower versions of the warpdrive with possibility of being pulled out of warp by players with the necessary equipment (don't know if this kind of thing exists in EVE)
- Sidenote: ships with mass would add more strategy to the game as they would make it possible for players to set up blockades at stargates or possibly space stations (possible exploit), it would also prevent a fleet of ships from hiding inside a bigger ship
Just my two cents.

Travel times in empire can be terrible, but with instas you can move anywhere really fast. I personally am out in the fringes of 0.0 Instas make traveling possible, but your limited to where your instas take you. The more instas you have to key areas the faster you travel.
Another recomendation is to have 2 characters hauling, have them ship and meet at a mid-point to minimize travel time if you have two accounts that is.

I been playing for 3 or 4 months off & on.. I hate to think anyone likes the travel times.. Im just getting into 20 to 40 jumps sometimes & they suck so bad i want to log off... alt tab isnt a fix it just helps ease the pain..
I love the game but to much realism isnt fun.. yea space is big & you should have to travel but sometimes 30 minutes to an hour to pick up something BLOWS..
I only get a few hours 3 or 4 times a week to play most of the time.. wife, kids, job, dog, food tend to get in the way.. I can go cook a whole meal before i get to my destination witch is sad for a video game IMO.. Its a game not NASA trying to get to andromida
This one issue is why LOTS of people that try eve dont stay.. Ive tried to get several my of bros to play & after a while they cant take it.. i know some dont want to hear that but its true..

I honestly dont thing regionilisation happened. It just pi**ed people off by increacing travel times.
Then those people are stupid for still flying so much and whining about it :P

*cough*
Pre Patch, Nanotransistors sold for 2500 Post Patch they sold for 2000-2300 Now they sell for 1600-1700
Couriers increase overhead. Overhead is not good. the POS market IS crashing. In the trade channel (POS Funtime) everyone has WTS Ads, there is not a single WTB. I take that back, someone wanted to buy Technetium at 1k PU (was selling for 5,500 immediately after patch) and someone wanted to buy Neodymium at 4k (pre-patch) and people rejoiced there was finally a buy order.
Traveling doesnt help, as the Caldari market (where all the T2 producers are) is the only one where goods are even moving, if in small quantities.

Well maybe its smaller comaprioson to realease but its still much to slow. And take notice i have been playing a month in baeta nd i m playing Eve from 2 weeks after release,i know what im talking about. The Super highways are gone i get anice boost from 40 i think to 60 jumps from my 0.0 to empire...
OFc i can compare Eve to any other game in terms of fun.I agree these games were different in fact they were single player and more "shooter " oriented.Still imho what stands true is the fact they were all space sims in wich you traveled a lot and during travel something happened. And thats my point , the "somthing happening" factor.
What i aim at is with Eve a damn lot of your playing time you dont need to take actions, you dont need to think , my mind is on " idle" 75 %of the time. The are a whole lot of boring pass times.
Im not joking when i take break form Eve and play my other passions strategy games im impressed how i feel the strategy games goes fast. Last time it was "Alpha Centauri" and yea the fast feeling was there.Because despite the overall hoge depth and slong time of play each moment you got to take actions upon wich you must think, each momsnts something happens you must react and most of the time not standard automatic way.
And last point : i live in 0.0 from around 1,5 year.I know 0.0 reallly good.
I was talking about traveling not npc at belts.I was talking about things to break travel monotony. You cant end in asteroid field while traveling in Eve.
The npc at gates are joke they never are fast enough to warp scrmble anything other then indy, and not even indy .
With instas traveling in 0.0 is totally monotonous and ultra boring the only trouble system is at the empire/0.0 edge then its 95% of time safe.

Originally by: F'nog While other games are moving towards the insta-port travel option, I like that Eve makes us travel long distances to objectives.
Size is an illusion just something of a proportioną I could just say thisą make a timer tell you to wait 5, 10, 15, 30 min and then you just teleport thereą what is the real difference? Your just moving through some scenery? Might as well be a scrolling background or something.
Kind of like the theory of relativityą and your argument about even size or space isnĘt that great as eve has systems, and you jump and load you donĘt even get to see things, everything is in grids etcą some other games or mmos do things differently at least making it seem as a virtual worldą but then again space is so big and boring already :P
I prefer more of the way that the game is right now then with highways, just wish that it would take shorter time to go to 1 route, but if you want to go to other places you have to spend quite a bit of time to againą but to go to some central place it wouldnĘt take too long.
IĘm more then sure there have been tests and plenty of theories on how much time or threshold the general public has for "time sinks" so to speak.

I would be prepeared to bet that travel times are the one single biggest reason why people stop playing eve.
The problem is that it has knock on effects. This is supposed to be an MMO game where people play together but the travel times are just so boring that you won't contemplate travelling to join up with someone. So you end up solo'ing and down that road leads boredom and account termination.

Edited by: Majestik on 11/08/2005 09:22:24 "Truly Massive Universe" is one of the features of the game. Very unique game here.
I have specially fitted ships for long term travel and some bookmarks. So travel time is pretty much the same. Also checking the market and buying/selling/pricing/etc. while in route. Some chatting. If I am making 40 or more jumps it is for a good reason and is rare. Tech 2 indys help a lot. If I don't have time to travel I hire someone to do it for me which helps create income for others in my region. And if I need to team up we make arrangements ahead of time.
I also do sit-ups,push-ups,and other exercizes, clean house, talk to mom, etc. on the long trips.
Best abs in Gallente space.
