Highway nerf is only half of the problem. MMOGs are moving toward getting people around all over the gameworld as fast as possible, but CCP seeems to love transit, mining and other AFK-oriented stuff. Blah.
Player teleportation would help a lot, as would some sort of 'autopilot mode' where your ship travels and returns fire per NPC rules while offline. _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

I'm wondering why people dont get what CCP are doing - it's called 'regionalisation'. They are trying to get poeple to co-operate together and by forcing travel times to be longer this is begining to happen. There are regional markets beginging to open up I'm seeing more 'regular' vistiors in the area in which we live as an example, and we are gaining a few more sales from an area of space that was ,before CWE, a dead zone.
Including the map changes there are more routes to take to get somewhere and tbh it doesn't take overly long. The only thing that appears to have been 'affected' are the trade routes - but why should someone get a few mill in profit for only a couple of jumps.
IMO - Space and the EVE universe is huge, and therefore shouldn't take 12 jumps to cross form north to south and east to west. EVE - is not an 'Instant Gratification' game you want that play CS, or go play the grind that is WoW.
By all means flame away - but hey I have a right to my opinion like others in this thread. --------------------------------- No Slugs were harmed in the creation of this signature --------------------------------- |

While other games are moving towards the insta-port travel option, I like that Eve makes us travel long distances to objectives. It adds something I like to call "size" to the universe.
It makes things more interesting when you travel a long way to get to a destination. You feel like you've actually accomplished something by making the effort to travel all that way to get there. I would say something impressive here about the size of the universe, but Mr. Adams has already summed it up pretty well.
Travel in Eve actually means something. If we could get anywhere we wanted in a few seconds or minutes, it would greatly lessen this wonderful game. Here, territory actually means something. In other games, you can't really say the same thing. So why ruin one of the things that separates Eve from all the other MMOGs out there?
And if anyone questions my experience or motives, I live in the southern end of Feythabolis. I don't think there are many other systems in the game that are as far from the center of empire, let alone farther than that. So I know what it's like to do long runs all by myself, without AP.

If a lot of regions didnt totally suck, I might agree. But, for example, my HQ is in caldari space. If I want to go try out a BC in a complex, I need to go to gallente or amarr (maybe minnie too, but not sure) to find a plex that will fit it. If I want to mine for some isogen, same deal even most caldari lowsec areas are massively mined out.
OTOH if I lived in gallente space and wanted to try my rig against an NPC that doesnt blasterize, I have to go elsewhere. _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Edited by: VossKarr on 10/08/2005 07:45:18 It's not that the travel is too long in Eve, it's just that there this myriad of stargates you have to a pass trough to get there. Too many annoying start-stop cycles for my taste.
I would love it, if there were a bit more fluidity to travel in Eve. Dunno, maybe all the stargates along your path ought to shoot you continuously to your destination without stopping at every solar system (unless something disrupts that ). I'm even willing to sacrifice as much time as before, but without gating at every freaking system on my way.

I disagree , i like the feeling that space is wast , was one of the things that amazed me when i started playing eve.....i really got a feeling largeness and mystery........that was ofc before the highways ...... 3 jumps to Pator from Amarr .

Edited by: Zaldiri on 10/08/2005 08:22:34 Bah increased travel was a good thing. It gives corps with organisation and a bit of forethought an advantage. At the moment most of the members of my corp have little or no need to travel further than about 5 jumps from our HQ. You realy dont need to be traveling 30 jumps regually.
Yes a lot of MMOs have insta travel systems. On the other hand a lot of MMOs have XP grind based skill systems. EVE dosen't have to conform to what makes other MMOs work. Thats what makes eve special.

Travel time is slower. However, you're working on the assumption that you _have_ to travel. You don't.
There are things that are unavailable in certain regions. The reason for this is they _used_ to be too close to a hub, so everyone went there instead.
Now regional markets are picking up again, as traders are realising that there's a vast profit to be made transporting across regions. Or by being the guy making caldari ships/fittings in amarrian space.
Minerals, with highways, used to be a consistent price. Now they're starting to regionalise, with isogen being more expensive in caldari space, due to reduced supply. The creates a price differential, and gives someone an incentive to ship it.
And with a freighter, they're able to do so.
Not everyone likes hauling. Not everyone likes mining. Not everyone likes combat. But some do, and will see the profit margin. And now they can do so with bulk cargo transport.

In your moaning post, you've just demonstrated exactly why higher travel time is so good. Not every region in Eve is the same. As you state, isogen is quite rare as you can only mine it in lowsec. It didn't used to matter, as you could do a two jump trip from New Caldari to Amarr and you had all the isogen you'd ever want. The ring of systems around Yulai added a few more jumps to the equation, but not really enough to lower isogen prices in Caldari space. Now it's a huge distance between the Caldari and Amarr systems and the isogen prices have risen quite a bit in Caldari space. Now traders can buy isogen cheaply in Amarr space and haul it over to Caldari space for nice profits. Instant player created trade-routes.
Why should everything cool be within 3 or 4 jumps of wherever you choose to call home in Eve anyway? Very few regions "totally suck", each has something that makes it a little bit more special than other regions. What did "totally suck" was that no matter where you used to travel in Eve, everything was around the same price and if you really wanted to do some shopping, the only serious place worth going was Yulai.
I think that removing the highways has been one of the best things to ever happen to this game.

Yesterday I was looking for new agents to work with. I were in Dabrid wich is about 7 jumps away from Amarr. Found a station with 2 lvl 3 ql 20 and 4 lvl 4 ql 20 agents. Only problem it was 28 jumps away form Amarr. The horror of traveling so far.
As I got a new ship in Yulai it had gone like 40 minutes til I was ready to travel after departing from Dabrid. I discovered I had Instajumps all the way down to the station so the trip through low sec system didnt turn out to become a nightmare anyway. And all in all I just spent 1 hour 20 minutes traveling, setting up my ship and locating a nice agent system.
Travel in EVE is good now. Before NWO it was kind of boring, you could be everywhere any day. Now it might take you a few days to bother to go to another region.

To quote Douglas Adams - "Space is BIG, I mean really BIG"....
To be able to just instantly jump to any point in the galaxy from any other would completely destroy this feeling which IMHO is well presented in EVE.
For example when your 40 jumps away from empire you only have access to what you brought with you, can build on site, or is on the usually limited local market. This means you have to plan such expeditions properly and once your there if you forgot something then its a long trip for someone..... Making it possible to just jump right out there would completely destroy this aspect of the game (as well as having rather severe implications for anyone trying to defend an area of space).....

In order to really regionalize the market, they'd have to make it so you would have to go through lowsec to get to another empire/state/federation/republic (choose your preferred designation ).
Right now, moving from amarr space to minmatar space means nothing more than some time invested (most likely afk time too). Putting lowsec between them, would mean better opportunities for traders with guts, more variation in prices, better opportunities for builders and it would make more sense from an RP pov.
Basically, the longer/more dangerous travel becomes in EvE, the easier it gets to use that to your advantage. Whether you're a builder, trader, miner or pirate, it would give you a better chance of making more money. All you'd need to do is figure out how.

Am I right or am I wrong but I thought Eve was a 'Space' game? If I recall rightly the return of the space shuttle yesterday from orbit to touch down took over an hour to complete....and they were only a few hundred miles high.Imagine if it took us that long to dock?
Ok its impossible to compare real world to the game world as there are just too many issues to deal with. Travel times in Eve will never suit some people be they too short or to long. What is the point in being able to go from one end of map to other in 5 mins/5 hours...Just imagine what that will do to the markets and the affect it would have on the game.
Im sure most people adapt to the way it works and I know from personal experience that once anything more than 5 jumps was a long way. Now I dont blink an eye at 30/40 jump round trips and have been known to do in excess of 100 jumps in an evening when its been reqd.
Originally by: Unknown Subject Fix it yourself. Can we say "insta jump"?
Regarding these...again its up to the individual how they want to play the game. One thing I will say about them though is that wherever I see an argument against them its usually filled with people whining about not being able to catch people etc etc 'yawn' . Then lo and behold I see the exact same people who were complaining about them one minute using them ingame the next. Get real guys...if you dont like them why use them? ...and then whine about them??

Spot on with this..couldnt agree more. and why even start the topic without contributing more than half a dozen words?
If the OP does ever read this again....read this little story and see what you think ...will it change your opinions?..I hope so
Im in a 2 man corp. Ive done the bigger corp thing and loved every bit of it but sometimes its nice to take time out which is what I did. I decided I would try something different and with CCP seeming to encourage players into 0.0 I thought id get involved.
Eventually i got involved in hauling some gear into 0.0...And Im not talking just in 0.0 im talking 40+ jumps in. Obviously a lot of logistics reqd for this. Now eventually your going to attract attention to yourself and sure enough this happened. There I am happily travelling through when all of a sudden I find the system being locked down. Im flying an elite indy and have a covert pilot scouting ahead. For various reasons Im obviously not welcome.. What was a 3/4 hr trip for me suddenly turned into a long night .
Everyone who has jumped into 0.0 at some point knows what a gate camp is like. Now Imagine that times 10..... Two ships that have no fighting abilitys or able to escape a good crew at each gate you come too. I will leave out the finer points but 6 hrs later I reached where I wanted to be. Of course I have to get back then and these guys know it too.. 7 more hours later and with outside help from one very good friend I managed to get home safely.
Ok to the OP this scenario is possibly a living hell but its possibly the most fun ive had in ages and loved every bit of it. Ok I could have logged and came on later but where is the fun in that?
Hats off to the guys who were trying to stop me as they were very well organised and I cant knock them for trying...great example of what real teamwork can do and I was impressed.
Ok I might get slated by some people for not letting them catch me but thats my choice...I worked hard for what I got and why should I throw it away? Each to there own I say ! And I play it my way..not how they want it to suit them.
Oh and better luck next time guys..
