Originally by: Exaali Vendraxxil Just out of curiosity, what is the insurance payout for dreads/freighters? Has anyone insured (or tried to insure) one yet? Whats the diff between the payout and what you paid to acquire?
If I remember correctly, Platinum insurance on the Gal Freighter was going to cost me 230M for a payout of about 770M.
Retail seems to be from 1.2B to 1.8B right now, and if you built it yourself you probably spent close to 6B on startup costs and about 850M in minerals at retail prices. Could be off a bit there with recent changes in mineral prices (downwards).
Freighters are very worth it, as many have pointed out, simply for the unparalleled logistical capability.
As for Dreads, we'll soon see. I'd hate to be the first one to jump in on a POS with 6 or more large guns active. Would be hard to lose a 2B isk ship to a 200M isk POS setup.

Can't say bout Dreads yet, haven't seen one in action or used one.
But Freighters? Holy crap, quickest way to make billions, ever.
Mine massive amounts of ore 5 or 6 (or more) jumps from a refinery, then calculate how much time it would take to haul all that using 2 of the best expanded Interon 5s. Now calculate moving it all in a freighter, using 2 people (scout etc, and freighter pilot).
To fly a freighter you don't need to be in an alliance at all. You need a few people in the corp who trust each with access to a ship worth that much, and at least 2 or 3 that can fly it. The people who can fly it simply help out the members that can't by flying it for them.
As long as you use it a couple time to make large ore hauls, you've paid for it. At that point its cream, and who cares if it gets stolen, you just go buy a new one
Yes I have a carebear acount

Edited by: Dray on 17/08/2005 19:57:29 I paid 2.25B for a freighter for my alt, that was among one of the first in game. Are they worth it? i think i paid more than i shouldve for my freighter but it was to get our industrial corp into freighter production asap. Ive also got a good little npc haul running that can net me between 40-120M a day depending on the location of the commondity i deal in so i'll claw back some of what i spent on it in between corp hauling. The build value is around 800M iirc so yes they are over priced but for the first time in eve we find ourselves with a ship thats price isnt based on build cost but production time, with this in mind i dont think prices will drop below 1.5B.
As for dreads im curious to see the first fight.
I picked up this ace book today everyone rates it as a must buy for the budding military genius, tho ive decided to rename it as "Sun Tzu's art of the bloody obvious" |

Freighters are the best thing for ANY kind of corp that has any kind of logistics requirement, PvP or Industrial. Haul as much in 1 trip as it would take 80+ decent industrials - MASSIVE timesaver.
Biggest pain in the butt getting the first built, especially if you're a small, only semi-wealthy corp, is the initial work to build the first one. You almost -need- the freighter to get more freighters built ... catch 22, once you got one, you probably don't need another unless you're a large organization, or just like to have a second one as backup for some reason.
One freighter's probably more than enough for roughly every 50 active corp members to handle logistics, and when its inactive, people might want to start thinking about contracting out to 3rd parties that can't afford the billion plus isk price tag to,say, relocate their home office or something for money on the side.
Dreads ... jury I think is still out at this point because of requirements, and the few that might already be toodling around in them aren't talking much yet for various reasons.

Got some Spaceship Command V Battleship V some Advanced Spaceship Command V Capital Ships I
That's just to get it out of dock.
Guns require Large (Projo/Hybrid/Energy) Turret V Gunnery V Capital Ship Turrent I
Not as harsh a climb, especially since a lot of folks have worked these skills up awhile ago ... but just starting out, a fairly hefty hurdle.

You also need Advanced weapon upgrades lvl 5 as a prereq to use siege mode, you need jump drive lvl 5 to get access to the skill that increases jump range... so its quite a big job in terms of training. Approx 85 days (with decent attributes and implants) provided you have all the pre patch skills trained (jump drive at lvl 3).

Forgot about the travel, yeah.
No one's going to really be 'soloing' these things either, not with the logistics required to get about.
A Dread that can't jump because its cordinating link ship has been popped is a sitting duck for a force that can muster relatively quickly and *poof* 3-4 billion of enemy equipment down the drain, not counting the time investment to assemble the dang thing.
Figure, -using- one or more of these, wisely, will require about another billion isk in ships and pilots to escort it effectively.
