I'm sure that the definition of a connection goes something like this:
"A client currently connected to the eve environment"
This is where I begin to wonder. There is no question that a higher number is certainly an indication that more people are online but eve is the only MMO that I have played that does not have an inactivity time out built in. If 14K players are "connected" how many are actually playing. I know myself that when I log in I generally don't log out until I get booted at server reboot.
If 14K players are online what would you guess is the amount of players who are "active" which for me personally is the number that actually matters.
My guess: 6K
Just my two cents, Brum

ôbut eve is the only MMO that I have played that does not have an inactivity time out built in.ö You know I was sure Eve had a 23hour inactivity timer. When ever I go afk for 23hours I get kicked out of game.

6k, lol, you actually think the other 8.000 log on to do nothing?

Nope I actually think there is a lot of this scenario.
Log in before going to work, check your skills and just not bother to log out.
or
Heading to bed, set up a 17 jump autopilot through safe areas and hit "Go".
or
Set up a build order that takes 7 hours. And Umm, go to a movie.
or
....
I guess the question is "What is active?".
Understandably though eve is a VERY different game and what is active in one game may not be valid for eve.
But if you define active as "If you send a character a chat request and they are actually there to receive it" then I stick by my 6k estimate. Well perhaps not, 8-9k may seem more realistic actually. Note I said they are there to receive the request, not that they actually answer it because as we all know talking to strangers is bad.

And you think in WoW that even half the people on are playing?
Only reason I can see that they wouldn't be online is because the server crashed, kicking them off -- Proud member of the [23].

I dont see the problem with maybe a 2 hour inactivy timer, if a player is in a safe place, a station or whatever. Pop up a window saying that you'll be disconnected in 5 mins unless you click here or whatever

Edited by: James Lyrus on 22/08/2005 14:36:22 I'll admit I'm often 'doing stuff' but not actively at the keyboard. This is mostly because I can VNC from work, to set autopilots, twiddle POS modules on/offline etc. Park in a 0.0 system and cloak, or whatever.
Too laggy to get in a fight though. I do think that an inactivity timer would be kinda handy, just so people know I'm not ignoring them when I don't accept convos or whatever.

ôWell perhaps not, 8-9k may seem more realistic actually.ö More like 10+k if not a lot higher are active on Sunday. Proven by the logs, look back to a restart done during peak hours and soon after restart the numbers are pretty much as high as they where before the restart. If everyone was inactive like you say then the numbers would drop a lot more then they do.

No one has ever been AFK in PoTranquility or Bazaar in EQ or in Ironforge in WoW. The only reason people would be more afk in eve than in other MMORPG is afk traveling in empire, and even in a hauler it's fairly rare for those travel to last more than 1 hour ...

I'm fairly sure EQ, EQ 2, DAOC and Wow all have inactivity timers under an hour (to keep server laod down)
In my WoW account I'm logged out within 30 minutes.

EQ does not, you even HAD to have a char AFK in bazaar at night to sell stuff. WoW had a 1 hour timer, to cut down the queue if anything, I doubt DaoC and EQ2 has timer.

Brumly, your thoughs can be easily applied to "ALL" MOG. I cannot list all the time i sat at DAOC making armorcrafting. Cannot list all the time i stand still in City of Heroes waiting for a decent group. Cannot list all the time i spent in UO just fletching arrows. If you Log in you are playing: checking market, waiting for friends, even stay docked watching a movie on television. If i have completely nothing to do in EVE, i simply don't log. That's why 13900 logged people means what CCP mean.

Maybe WoW, but when I played EQ2 a few months back they definately didn't. For the first few months of the game you had to be online to sell anything on the market, so every night half your server would be afk in their rooms with the market window open, hoping their dagger of imminent danger or whatever would sell.
The interactive crafting in that game was cool, everything else sucked.

Nauta,
I remember that as well. You're completely right.
I guess it really comes down to is the 14K number a realistic representation of the amount of people playing EVE. If you're thinking of trying eve and read an article talking about 14K users at one time is the user being misled by this number. After reading peoples arguments and justifications i would say "perhaps a little" but not as much as I had originally thought.

Actually there are 20k online but they only show 14k on the login cause the login only show last 20minutes that have logined. Soo I wonder why you worry anyway about something that might make you upset. Beside goto every system and count locals.

14k players refers to players who are still playing on a 14k dial-up modem.

I encourage my pilots to go afk in stations, just to **** the campers outside off.
It's not like we can actually see if they're camping anyways, the stations are cealed shut...

So you really think 8,000 accounts are inactive? And who gives a hoot anyway? The point being that during that 23hour period the number of accounts logged in and thus 'playing' peaked at 14k.

Eve does have a built in log out timer. I longest i stay logged in before getting dropped by CCP is about 6 or 7 hours whether I am active or not. Its usually much shorter then that. (and no, I don't mean my internet connection)

from what I've viewed over the last year when the server has crashed and everyone has relogged on there is very few who must have been afk as nearlyt he same number always log back on.
