Although you guys at CCP do a brilliant job (most of the time) i suspect this change you are talking about with the new EVE launcher is going to be a mistake.
CCP Aporia wrote "the new EVE Launcher will only make you share the data required for installing the client while you are downloading"
i have an issue with being made share my upload speed, i pay for it so why should i be made let ccp take advantwage of my broadband. we all share torrents but this is for FREE stuff and EVE/patches/expansions are not FREE.
"once your download is complete you will not be distributing it to others, unless you explicitly enable this in the options"
so when patch day has come and gone it will take an age to update ? because like i've said i won't be allowing ccp to use my broadband to distruibute their product as i'm sure most other will do the same, but i tell you what CCP give me a 33% discount off my monthly sub and i'll allow you to take advantage of my network.
"after all it might be useful for sharing the installation across your local network"
some of us have a couple of users on the same LAN playing EVE, but in general most will not, so why would people want to share it on their LAN ?
"We are also, by default, limiting the upload rate so that it should not affect your normal internet usage. This can be adjusted within the settings, should you wish to do so."
you have no right to take advantage of my upload speed, unless CCP wishes to purchase it, please see above regarding the cost of this. I have no issue with the launcher going to torrent, but hey CCP seed it on your own servers, my network is not free for use.

Why do you even care so much? You're uploading parts of the EVE client that you've already downloaded to help other players download their clients faster, and in return you're getting a more stable download with potentially faster speeds due to multiple download streams.

I don't get it ... everyone I know on patch day (well, before the launcher anyway) would head over to eve-files, grab Chribba's torrent link, and download the client that way. Been away for a while so "patchday" for me has been days/weeks after everyone else (just training 30d skills and all), so I haven't really noticed whether the launcher is slow or unstable with the download.
However, with the assumption that I'm gonna be back solidly now, and fighting every last one of you for the new client on patch day ... a bittorrent style download will be awesome (esp since it'll help my spacebros get into the game faster too).
PS -- I'm jealous of anyone outside the US who has awesome connections ... I only have 30/5 One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia Malcanis for CSM8 |

Further proof that knowledge doesn't equate or lead to generosity. If you don't want to seed, uncheck the box or set the upload maximum to 0 kb/s and go sit in your corner where you're nice and solitary.
I for one hope that there will be a way to distribute through standard torrent clients as well, so I can seed with the launcher closed. |

I agree a bittorrent style download might be a good idea but only if CCP are doing 90% of the seeding. it' sunrealistic to expect 300k hell lets half that because we all know half it not more of them are alts. so 150k seeds that will stop seeding after the first day is fail. if CCP seeds it then no worries.
i have no problem seeding torrents that are free, seeding a product i pay for,, NO thanks. |

Why is this such a big deal for you? You already quoted them saying that the upload will be disabled by default, and that the upload when downloading will be set low enough that you won't notice it.
It's not a big deal unless you're on a limited data plan, and if you are, you should probably switch to an unlimited one anyway, so you don't have to think about this stuff. |

Even though it makes no difference to me personally, I do believe this needs to be set as OPT IN, as in, it's off by default. Why?
Because the OP does have a point where he does not have to share his own connection, regardless of protocol used or if everyone else in the industry is doing it or not. The why he doesn't want to share his bandwidth is irrelevant as he's paying for it, he decides where it's used and how.
If you do decide to opt in on the BT download, getting faster downloads, you also upload while doing so, which seems logic.
If CCP does go with BT and it actually eats up my upload in any way noticeable, I'll simply limit it's port to 0kb/s on the upload on my router.
TL;DR This needs to be OPTIONAL, with default being OFF! :) |

Not to defend the op, but unlimited plans aren't available enough to be assumed. I know when I lived in Canada it was pretty much impossible to get an actual unlimited plan unless you lived in certain geographical areas (and even then I think they're not available anymore). IMHO, the OP is being utterly silly.. so CCP is going to use a little bit of your upload to help get the rest of their subs their updates, big deal.. I guess you like greed being good...
I have totally no problems with the new protocol, it's a great step forward, as it will allow them for a better, more stable spread of updates to their subscribers, instead of overloading their servers every time there's a major patch or release.
You won't notice the bandwidth use of the update system, that's why there's setting for that, and if you have a good connection ( 10MB up isn't that good, but not bad either ), you will be able to help spread the love of a new update faster so more people will be able to enjoy Eve. It won't affect you, financially, or otherwise.. so why on earth would you complain about it? Other than being a scrooge.

What I said was this should be OFF by default, so anyone not wanting to use the BT model can opt out of it as it uses up the customer bandwidth. |

However, there are ways to limit this, and by default the new EVE Launcher will only MAKE you share the data required for installing the client while you are downloading"
I know how some clients work. I've stopped me uploading before by setting the upload to the lowest, which was something like 5 kb/s. If you can't spare 5 kb/s during the download, you need a new connection. And, by default, you don't upload anything unless you're downloading a patch. |

That was the worst comparison I've ever seen anyone try to make. You pay for electricity by the kilowatt & your monthly payment will fluctuate depending on what you use. EVE remains the same price from month to month. Many games already switched to torrent stuff and it helps people to get data faster and allow to lower bandwidth cost for CCP which both are benefit for us.
So no they wont be paying you because you are uploading game data. Less they pay for bandwidth more they can put into development right?

You seem to have this confused in some way. CCP wants to sell a service (the ability to use the game). For that, we need a client to connect to said service. For that, they need to distribute that client. It's in their interest that I have the client, not mine :)
I can, and will if it becomes a problem, limit the upload rate for anything running on my own network. So this, for me, is a non-issue, like I said in the first post I made.
What I don't accept is something being forced into my network so that I may pay to use some other service! :) It's rather silly that I have to do the publishers work and still have to pay for the product I'm distributing :) |

The electricity my own computer uses? no. The electricity used by the CCP servers? For me, yeah. I go to a business college, and yes, you do calculate electricity into the price, but not directly based upon how many people are buying your products. You do it the other way around. |

how that will work ? You have two options here: 1. Change your ISP to normal. Why you pay money for incomplete and bad service? 2. Read dev responses to devblog, and you will find out that you will still have option to download patches without BT.
the point (2) make more sense then point (1)
there are plenty of people using wireless providers with blocked torrent (any of torrent) protocol or the torrent protocol is shaped to almost 0b/s .
If people may still use the HTTP protocol then I don't see a problem |

why use firewall rules to control the bandwidth usage, when it's so much more fun to whine on the forum about a feature which we have not even had the chance to test. I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous. |

When comparing quality of expansions between CCPs to WoWs, it works out. Regardless of if you actually "like" WoW or not, their expansions are actually worth the price, where it would be a joke to even try and sell any Eve expansions. Minus Apocraphya. Don't Vote for Malcanis

You also need to learn how to read. Posting on a forum, in a topic started by someone else on a subject that's up for discussion is whining? Anything that goes against your notion of "how it should be" is whining? :)
I think you misunderstood the objective of a forum. Let me enlighten you.
1. a. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business. b. A public meeting place for open discussion. c. A medium for open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper, a radio or television program, or a website. 2. A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation. 3. A court of law; a tribunal.
I'm exposing my point on view on this subject. If this is considered whining, then you have some kind of comprehension problem that I cannot help you with. |

the issue is this, when most have finished downloading they will not seed. if you use torrents then you know this.
